Does weaken the remarked with a galaxy note: ten, it's in two sizes! That's why I'm androids back gesture Julia alexander joins us talk what disney and the streaming wars we get into it. Extra additional restrictions apply cement, mobile dot com for full terms. it wasn't the recast flagship, podcast diverge podcasting an ecosystem that is now a partnership of microsoft to combat hi, I'm the I am your friend. It's not actually we'll get to it. I'll, explain it to you Nila dearborn is in new york with me. I am in new york with you because of the note ten event, that's right, which I couldn't personally attend turned out that came forward anyway, in which samsung and microsoft announced partnership. Paul Miller is here, hello, how's it going paul,
I'm very well. Thank you. Do you do you? Did he remove your headphone jack for additional battery now? But I would like to announce that I will never part were with microsoft and they can now pay me and they can never own me wow it's the year of linux, on the desktop everybody thats right. We do alright, that's the big news, the no ten It's here, too sizes. It's a lot going on your husband, there's two sizes, there's a small note. Everyone says: don't call it small, because it's big six point three inches, that's big, but there's no bezels. So I dunno it's about it's like not that much bigger. in the galaxy Austin. I'm very excited about the small one yeah I actually really like it, and then there's the like the full. On note note, the note note ii note yeah no drama the note ten plus, which I think should just be the note, but whatever it's got a six point. Eight inch screen it's about the same size as last year's note. So the thing about the note is: it's comes in the back half of the year, just like the
does and that is off cycle to when qualcomm makes it's newest android chips available to entered manufacturers. That's the earlier in the year and the s ten usually gets like right in that first rev of it right. So the note historically in your head is the phone that just has every feature and is the most powerful and the biggest and the the most the most samsung, and they can't do that with the processor anymore huh an increasingly it's getting hard for them to do it with like the screen, because this thing doesn't have a ninety hurts refresh rate like the one percent pro it's not bigger than other andred phones, but it is a very, very. Very nice screen, like it looks like us, samsung cold, they screen yet, and so I'm not worried freaked out about the ninety hurts thing or whatever, but what what he by a note for like what is it that you want out of it
adoration on the technology packed into the stylus, you can now waved the stylus like a wand, it it's a? U nobody! Stylus! Now it's a single piece of metal just two days in the box, and I know that you are there. I mean we gotta do something. If there was an irish into in this I would have you would exceed the functionality of the original here's. My question: when does this tieless become a tiny little phone on it's own? That's where you gotta get to like what is the style? It's a little phone. It usually hold up to your head. Calls with the stylus can be awesome yeah, you could wave it around. accelerometer and gyroscope in it sovereignty of dieter like fucking through a camera with sixty five percent accuracy right boy. I didn't realize that you have to hold the button dunwoodie way It's not like that. Then. I got up like sixty five seventy percent forward.
you're improvement. This is the big thing for me. Is decks, will run or a pc decks as you'd? Have no one uses it, or maybe people do like. There's like the four people that, like body usb see, monitor bluetooth, keyboard and, like I'm, living that decks life, but really coming come on yeah, but the ability to an android window on your computer, that is just your phone, is actually kind of compelling because It's a ways your way to get your messaging, for example, you can do some of this is like the year, but your phone stuff on microsoft, but getting whatsapp or signal on your computer. You gotta like scan the qr code and mixture blah and vipre defeat it, but then it just sits there. Is there yeah, open it up to the window and go to town? Try to move files from android to a pc is always sort of been a terrible way to use dex. I just want to be clear on this
index with the note nine, for example- yes, ten, you plug in a monitor you plug in a keyboard yep you get like a windowed operating system is like a riff on android. Yet is running android absolutely made windows out of them. Yes, it is worked iteratively better over the years, yet they used to have to have a dock, and then they made you just need a cable and I'll admit it. You just need a usb cable to plug a computer, so you ve got everybody. India, computer yeah the young candidates will plug it into an a monitor. If you know what I'm saying to ride on a mac, oh yeah, you get it species. Cable. You One engineer: mack young other end into your note, ten yup by the way same plug on both ends of that cable. There you go now, you see the problem. If usb c is alive, then three clear to phone besides charging up your laptop and then an app on your laptop opens up? and then one assumes that can just open up. You might have to click a button. I dunno he got it yeah! Something happens: you do some application stuff, yep the decks.
Opens up, and then you see a windows operating system. You decide at window yep. You don't see like a note ten right, that's what you see operating system is at a window like your your vienna, seeing into your note that suit her quickly. yeah. That's all close and so far it's super. Where does it feel like a is like what is the the guessing it there's a few perfectly native or does the future fancy, it totally does like there's a little bit. There's like it's a little bit slower, Well, that's a little bit sorts plug plugged into the phone directly then by. you can run a monitor over you, as we see without, is so weird yeah slorc, as is also like you to android like did not touch. It happened. Said sir andrew idea about everybody thought. Well, that's a deep guy
it's almost like it's I'm guessing, is probably kind of running a capture. Cart, yeah right except you just not recording it to your heart, but you're taking We are very o video signal over your pc and then showing it in a window and then also sending mouse events yep and also apparently drag and drop of it. Exactly that's exactly what's happening well. That's. Why that's why? I think, there's like it'd feel like it's a little little bit of leg. I've only used it for about like five minutes so that it could just be the ira were badly yeah. I mean I love this idea, yeah that you're going to sit down and then you can like kind of operate your phone on your computer yeah. It's a great idea. This sounds what like nuts you just you want the light the vertical like phone, this hush anyone s computer, I think cabins of it you see your phone and like use your phone on that same screen, yeah makes perfect sense. Why does you do that? That could be version four the you like, narrow the window and it's responsive design and like a phone, a phone,
oh, my god, it's a weird vienna, see yeah. Ok, you ever pearls for mac. You condemn you could like set the thing where it doesn't put all the window stuff, inside a desktop inside a window break out, have windows window in your mac. They should do that fail palace from actual exist, as it is just as some weird hardware compartmentalization stare Ok! Do that! That's what I want. I want random floating entering windows across makes a match operating systems. Its doesn't seem exactly like the future, but it has like rhymes with a future. They just It just feels right about it like. If I had this phone, I think I would use this more than I would have used decks before like like I'm working on a software project. I want to test the linux build of something right. So I just like open up this, that I open up the
linux app inside of dex, and then I run the linux app to test it out, and then I you know unplug it when I'm done and it's it's instead of having to like, like boot to you, know plug a whole, monitor and keyboard in to get this experience? Gale the raw power virtual heights of ex inside of dextra running and vienna, see over the cable on a mac or end. Then Also, it's gonna, be the dream machine for an android developer yeah. Maybe why? Because you can test your andred app on the same computer, ear develop a? U can test your ended up on an android phone, in your computer that you're developing the android without having to use an emulator or whatever yeah yeah. Maybe inside of decks yeah, that's the that's! The my upward discredit on deck tested, anymore that's a virtuous cycle. I was talking to a youtube star, but in our society
She is interested in it for video because they did about your video stuff for the no ten. Not it has like that. Its paying the accelerometer, the gyroscope more force, steady, shooting added. They could do the background, whatever s doing that zoo make think so. in theory, you might be shooting more video on this thing and so getting files off through dex might like be nicer because you could just like plug it in and then use the big file browser inside dax to go, find the stuff that you want instead of poking at it in the gallery and then hit the share button called fraying that somehow you'll get it to your computer. Or bouquet. That could be the thing. Maybe what else it's got? Three cameras. It's got. A little infinity o display has got three cameras. The big one has a time of flight camera which they are using for a r stuff which I didn't see, but they showed it on stage and it actually looks like really cool. Nobody will ever use it, but you can do the thing where you like drawn space. You know and you can like, draw a mustache on somebody's face and that stays on their face when they move around
really the best use of this technology. The coolest thing that it can do, though, is it. You can do a three d scan of a thing you can just like walk around the thing in a circle and then it creates a three d version of that object, and you know it looks pretty bad, but it's close, and then you can take that thing and like use it as like a a r sticker in some other seen or held, you could like throw it to a three d printer, for intellectual property theft. I feel like this will be once that sort of three scanning step becomes more ubiquitous like this to be a great like user generated content, video game yeah if I had escaped board game, but then I could only over teeters head that I scanned with my phone. You know and I make a youtube video of it now thing again. Let's go truly living the samson. What's my full, I like samson thousand used like weird sam's. Feature to make a week.
third game on android and they put it on youtube and I'm sponsored by samsung. It's pictures complete that loop. I am saying there needs to be a game. That is a good video, like you watch people like mod grand theft, auto. I see what you're saying like a good actual game that people actually play that accepts weird Proprietary samsung three scanning proper
I'm so into it. There's a bunch of other stuff. We can talk about like it's got the the beam forming for the zoom mic, which is cool. The thing that I keep coming back to, though, is it's just nice yeah, it's nine hundred and fifty the plus it starts at eleven hundred, and then it's two hundred bucks more or a hundred bucks more to get the five twelve storage, but the one plus seven pro costs four hundred and fifty dollars less or something three hundred fifty dollars less, depending on which model you're looking at, and it has in theory like comparable screen, perhaps even better to some people if they really care about refresh rate cameras, are like close. It's like it's really close and like every category, but it's just not as nice of an object. It's like one of the things you're paying for when you get. This thing is like I'm going to take notes now, do oh cr and I'm going to the dream of using the stylus, but you're also despise.
like a really nice phone yeah yeah has they are that infinity? Our situation like looking good it's just a little bit smaller than it is on the us ten, It's a hole in the middle of your screen. They centered it. Instead of putting it off to the side, I I'm done having angst and feelings about bezels and notches and stuff yeah super done it's. It's amazing that there's literally no bezel on the city like you can see it. You could see it it's there, but like it is minuscule and that's why they can have these giant screens so like again, like the regular know, tennis six point three inches, but it's more squarish than most phones, because it's a note and it since it goes edge to edge and there's very no bezel it could, it feel, does not feel like a six point, three inch phone used to feel it feels like a much smaller phone and so yeah, that's the one you're really into, but I'm trading my ass,
for. Why of sad, what the headphones jack! We should talk about that four minutes where I was going, but samsung is offering a six hundred dollar rebate for the s ten, which is like pretty good so it's still a pretty new phone, it's still a pretty new phone but yeah and then they're giving you one hundred and fifty bucks to like have store credit to buy like cases yeah, which I in itself? It is pure margin, that's how you know, like samson cases in wireless advisers costs for since these southern for seventy dollars about speed, dangles the usb see headphone dongle, not in the box. Ninety nine that's separate, I think, is actually technically a crime I want. I want those of headphones to say that I was extremely wrong about something and I cannot disappoint around with something. So we think last week, for which I thank him out. I said they're gonna take out the headphone jack, we're just minutes away from proprietary, bixby buds break it. That's it. That's the thing that you take up
jack and you like, but you still need to listen this stuff. Have you tried A hundred and twenty dollar headphones right that you know that, but I was good. They're gonna ran about galaxy buds and have bixby integration, but I let it go right because they do mention bixby once yeah right, like samson. This? Is your moment right? We took I found out, we know you're sad, have you thought about galaxy buds? They ve done. Bixby integration, bixby, no mixed is there not the bixby button anymore? It's integrated into the pit about yeah, which is amazing, like how far Are you demoted by activities also button patterns phone series of sleep, wake button yeah but like Yeah hookah series also just like constantly activating the flu, all the time yeah and then it gets recorded. Listen to my contractors. Get to that later. Do you guys think cortana and bixby hang out no, no
I think, we're china. There do nettle, exiting victories been alone. This whole time. now samson, when its laws the phone that literally as all the features I'm way does like every sometimes the only company it still does. This is rising, tell every Little feature has like a way. e brand name right there, like they forced limited as like that's the volume but, like I don't know, that's all that is right. The volume button just a flurry, if these features and names and you can wave the the pen around like an bixby. Nowhere, I think that's it assign to failures. and hear her, but also we may we hold the button down its bixby and it's not google assistant, and apparently you can't change it. Yeah you get so that's it
sign. Whatever. That means yeah you can you can you can set the long press to bixby and then you can set the double press to camera or like swap them. I think, but you can't set on any of those presses to Google assistant if they had lets if they had just natively. Let you choose Google assistant. That would be a huge sign, but they're not quite there. Yet. I think they should probably go there, but they're not quite there. Can I say this though the first ever bixby capsule valid, it was released recently, my god. This is your tat. You made the promise, I did so I I I said if anybody makes bixby they're called capsules for some There is another reason, those skills as bixby or whatever. That shows you a robot, a butler dog.
Doug butler. Originally, the dog wishes yeah that I would mention your name for a month as like the the catch. The word that was at the end of the show- and it is it has happened- you can go, it's not called bixby cause. They probably wouldn't have allowed that, but it's called dog butler, it's incredible by the cast, and you in order to like get the skill to work. You know how like amazon or like guests, that you're trying to talk to philips or whatever that Google does the same thing bixby south the place where you have to specifically invoke the caps. and then you have to give the council a command. You can't just like run a thing. You have to invoke the thing and then tell a thing what to do when you kill you exe invoke the capsule. I think you should be involved headline, so here, so you do, you have to like, say like Do it you ever and understand what you're trying to say sues you do it in dog butler. Show me a dog butler.
at I've, worked it out a picture of a dog. It's really good at it says me boy I just want everyone to know that for the past few days, dieter's and wandering around the office saying doug butler show me dog dollar did it not that he won't explain to you what's happening. It's keeps happening death, it's great. It's the one, true grey! Use of makes me if you have a samson phone bixby up and you have sport, the capsules store. Please please make this the most part, if the capsule you're, you can find the bixby capsule store without googling it you deserve. A lot of money is impossible. It's so confused anyway. I think it'd be great. If the verge s audience the people at samsung, phones may doc butler by far the most popular or highest rated, Yes, please s, absolutely! I think that's a power that we have. go river in your car. Get your samson phone out figure out where the capsules stores make this happened. For us last thing about bixby we had to publish a story,
they, whose headline was basically yet samsung, hasn't cancelled. The Bixby home Actually I have in front of meda samsung headlines. Cargo samson confer it's a long delayed galaxy home. Smart speaker is still in the works. What confirmation what an amazing confirmation. Yes, we have not given up on our barbecue girl, this much bigger, I wasn't gonna mentioned this, but I'll teach which is a cable company. As announced the smart speaker in the time that samsung has announced the galaxy m to now yeah, it's a five hundred dollar smart speaker with Alex integration that can control your cable box. If that thing beats the galaxy home to market the cable company, then there's a real problem: yeah, alright! So there's this picture. That I saw learning speaks volumes about what's going on with android in windows in samsung, microsoft. Ok, I'm not! regarding this, but I'm I'm I'm staying with you two examples. A billion partners onstage under
he's doing. I watched microsoft has drawn up that linked indiscreet, limited impact, and so you want as for business in various areas, on the note turn now, it's all of microsoft is loaded on another. No ten you got outlook preinstalled yet linked in. You got the year phone think had ability of windows and built into the quick settings. Yet so that's what I'm getting a photo, whether showing this off a photo, is some holding a note, ten with messages app open and then some of the windows? oversize windows I type in front of them. It's not your fault, it's showing them the messages in that app yeah. The reason you make that photo and put out in the world press image is to be like this can do The thing I message can do yeah, which is that, like a thing, people love writing imessage syncs to your computer, since she found okay now with your phone we've brought them together I think, microsoft's game is. We can't go partner if Google directly france and makes the most phone samson will sign literate
any deal. Let's body up with samsung we're make woman. So that if you have a windows laptop, the thing that you want is a samson phone right and I will be full of microsoft, services right that's. It seems like that is zambia argues microsoft's foam yeah, that's what they're gonna for they take the windows. Phone failed, failed bs. Another go inferred It's on windows and we're going to we're going to preload a bunch of stuff on Samsung yeah. I will tell you bill gates was on the show, but it says samsung phone, That is that, if I were you see a lot of that's completely reasonable to me, the the thing that I thought When I saw these partnerships is the holidays he's coming. Samsung traditionally has a huge marketing budget, no one's by an funds assigned, often as it used to the more expensive samsung needs every ounce of like marketing, support that it can get promotional support that I can get
and so hug and microsoft, in real close, the lakers will convince microsoft that it should promote samsung and it's good for both of them to sell some stuff. I think you're right that it makes a lot more sense that microsoft wants to push people to android, because the thinking Everyone is its open. You could do shit, I am sometimes as a problem, but it means that microsoft can get its hooks and in a way it never will be able to on the iphone, and so it is better for microsoft have andrade users than it is by phone users absolutely in and if ever do a surface phone right. They ve got like a lot of experience of disintegration and then pour samsung once again. Bilbil I, but we'll do ties in virtually every evening, threat of atlas samsung sitting as you do, you think of surface waters, really probable. Really farfetched to me. It is a thing Tom talks about a lot like we hear about it, a lot like theirs. I think, when I
like penthouse about it, he's always like he does. That passes like a lot of energy so you like says no with a lot of energy, but he's like being that we can only be like looked stuff right, like that's like eight deaths, like divide, is there it's always on the back burner. Someone at microsoft is always like what about a surface phone like every other month. Somebody delivers a clay prototype to his desk yeah. It's like this interview a month. It's just. A tangle like clay, its use. We see we're not ready for you up. I will tell you that microsoft, better than any other company at making hinges, knows that make it hinges. Samson, who do they talk about the folded on this? they pre out that it was that they were actually to ship. It ahead of this, though, wouldn't come up at the events. Yeah.
Well, they didn't announcement the chef there's a galaxy book s which has a qualcomm chip in it. Yeah, it's the qualcomm, eight c x, which is the most promising of the arm: chips for windows, devices and qualcomm o'clock on windows on arm windows device. You know you're supposed to get twenty three hours of video playback and you know lt he has built in and that's not complicated and like stuff, you know, but you know, it'll be like pokey and haim tried it. He said that it like felt: okay, yeah. We gotta review it. Of course it actually doesn't look so much like a it's like a hybrid between like a surface book and a macbook. It's like a weird middle zone between those in terms of it's like industrial, feel and look. Ok, I'm excited to see it. I think it's thousand bucks which,
it's pretty expensive for it to take a risk on the processor being enough for you where's the webcam, located that I I dunno it's it's on the top. It's on the top, I'm looking at it. Okay, I took a. I took a zoom call on an xps fifteen today with it have a nose cam, and I was like literally embarrassed the whole time like I apologize to the other person yeah. Ok, that's my new chicken, the new xps thirteen has the tiny little camera, the top that puts apple's webcam to shame, because it's like a tenth of the size and three times the quality yeah. Is there going to be a chrome? Obviously, it's it's hoping too much for one of these mainstream, these two come out with a linux etsy ex laptop by us when and where we can get a chrome book. Eight and eighty acts have an idea. Actually, I don't know if that's viable if they arrived, bothering to try a really
because they're so depend on until further honey. You can get a bunch of you can get a bunch of arm based chrome books, there's known out there, but like most have were not there not a premium. Well, I don't know. Theseus is specifically tune for windows like we're. Gonna get a bunch of email tie me I'm dumb and wrong. So just send it in here I don't know the answer. You might remember that early in the show dieter sir andred was slow. how to get all those ideas out. Dieter now be great would it make the enron people even angrier later, but I was getting So that's a no ten you can ever have you don't even believe it's gonna happen. I'm excited about the swollen too. I just you know. I like I like a compact, big phone. It's a thing that you don't you only like surfboards I mean I I've got the big phone yeah, okay, it's okay! I like a big screen. Phones are just getting bigger, that's what's happening! The dream of the small farmers is ok but there's like other android controversy and so
first, that is by the way you are driving. That's your fault, yeah, ok, so the last public media developer, beta for android q came out beta, six
and like they have for the past, several betas google tweaked the way that the back gesture works or like added some stuff, and it was super confusing and no one knew what it meant like people that run android sites full time for their job didn't know what the heck google is doing. So here's like the fundamental problem, there's this app drawer on the left and the back gesture means that the app drawer thing doesn't work cause you gotta. You can't slide it in, and google had two choices at this moment. Choice number one but had three choices: choice number one or figure out another way for the back gesture, save the app drawer. Just only do it on the right hand, side or something choice, number two yeah, sorry, the the app drawer you can't side in for the after anymore. That's like that's just the way it goes tap. The hamburger button turns out that. That's what ninety
these ninety six percent everything it was like three to seven percent people have ever used that slide to like yeah cause they're, not particularly discovered right so like they could have just said. Yep sorry and we all went ok, but instead what they did was like what? If we, what if we give you some, we hear you we're going to fix it or you're out and they're, trying to figure out a way to have swiping in from the left side of the screen due to completely different things. And their solution. As you like, hold your finger down, and then this the drawer kind of peaks out and then then you can cite in and it though side the drawer in right and this, all a problem because everybody that made an android app made an android app with a drawer because Mathias Duarte said that's the way to make android apps. You tell me ts this and he's a he read it says. No, no! No. I just said that you should like blah blah blah blah and do your own thing. Never one what's to leave us is going through your own have designer anywhere is ever said. What do you really think it was like complicated So these are likely to get this drawer.
Which I will be honest, I'm one of that like ninety three ish percent of people who did not know how to open drawers before now. It is it like a a hesitant swipe know if you hold your finger down and then the drawer kind of peaks out, and then you can cite it in so press. Then swipe gets along press than swipe yeah you're, totally intuitive gear. Susanna I mean no one's ever not deserve a long press action. So here's the Here's that the problem that actually compounds all of this is Google entered introducing a setting to change the sensitivity of the back gesture and what the hell does that even mean it means how far in how many you know pixels in from the edge of the screen. Will it detect your finger swiping and I'm like? Oh you did that, because
If people are mad about the thing and blah blah blah and that's what everybody assumed and they're like no, that back gesture thing is there because there's so many different kinds of android phones, a lot of them just aren't good at detecting the edge touches at the edges of the screen. They all have different, like you know, sensitivities there, and so sometimes you're going to need to crank it up, and I said well, why do you? Why are you giving the user a setting you shouldn't do that you should just What the sensitivity is in the phone ahead of time and set it to that and they're like yeah, except have you ever seen anybody with a phone they put cases on So, if you're going to make the entire side of the screen, like the core navigation feature of the phone which, by the way the back button, is the core navigation feature of android yeah people hit the back button. Fifty said more than they hit the home button. That's not yeah back when has never been beloved it
I I've always loved it yeah, except that it's broken, because it takes you out of the app instead of just going up. But still I deeply love, okay, so yeah, so they they need to put that little sensitivity thing on in case you put a big ass case on it, and then you Can'T- hit the edge just right. That is the most android thing. I've ever heard killing it at all best and worst ways like there's a part of me that loves it. Only google and only andrade comes up with this. That solution and as part of its like this is this is this. Is well, the problem with android in a weird way. Android is more consistent than the iphone when it comes to swiping in from the left side side of the screen. Even with that weird peak thing which which I should get rid of, because on an iphone, sometimes swiping in goes back, and sometimes it opens up a drawer. You never know when does it open up a drawer slack or a bunch of apps that have drawers gmail like a bunch of apps,
swipe swiping from the left. Sometimes you go up in the hierarchy and sometimes you open up a drawer over on the left hand, side you never know, and google just a swiping in goes back the end. Okay, so in twitter, you to see whole bunch. apps, owes its like all over the place tat. This is what unsafe and even in the twitter up. It's like you never really now I know I figured it out, I'm not going to No, it's! It goes back in the hierarchy until he gets a high many items that your yes, which is sure it does something different depending on the context, which is exactly what you want, and a user design faced with this russia front undiscoverable just data I've. Seen as much about this. I just got the the beta on my phone just before the vote cast our now. expert corners. If you swipe get back on the court. The bottom after bottom. A quarter, you swipe back, that's not a back. That's the assistant
Google assistant is a diagonal swipe in from either the bottom corners that is correct and there constantly changing the animation to try and figure out how to make it visible and understandable, and not annoying as hell yeah. I feel like I'm being tricked and a little little tidbit there. I think they can change it without having to push an entire android update like they could be like no one's using this of It took a setting on the server and that alike, so there, like a lean. Attaining the beta without debate, is updating why one is q coming out for you a few weeks quota. oh yeah, so this is it. This is like this is what we're getting and everyone's very mad, and I think the very mad, because Google, like to go, she had retire, has had half ass. They tried to like give everybody what they wanted and they should have just said. No where they were doing. That's like the least google away to do it right.
school the way to do it is like now he made a certain number of active for back just, but that doesn't even affect to think that people are unhappy about yeah. That's it What's the most good, it's like all of you are mad google reader going away But here is a number of options, and you too, they think I had another that is also at nightfall. Mac got a huge pixel scoop. They ve got like a whole bunch of suspects and, most of which are like basically what you would expect them to be. The two interesting things are sounds like they're gonna go for a ninety, her to frustrate screens it'll be way smoother, and there is a cordon quote. Dsl are like attachment for the cameras on the back what they are like a that's hardly thought is alert like is like islands is also the guy in charge of it. Mario cross just got like ascended up like like a like a deity to sudan.
Office and rick Austral is taking over taking charge of pixel directly for the time being. Huh yeah, ok right before, like we before the pixel forest. I like look like you've been tweeting about it. It's got to be gold, Julia alexander's here welcome. You think you I'd like to begin this discussion raise your voice, so I dont know what I was trying to do. A good the stream words had begun. War has never change. I think your chancellor puppeteer
I don't know what a joy just hit me that disney owns the ip heard palpatine gap. Can I knew that I get my. If you ask me, I would have told you that was true, but it wasn't me is a real. Until just now I like we, we do a lot of disclosures on the show, and I feel very strongly that I should just start like pre disclosing a disney disclosure like disclosure disney will soon on you. As you know, soon there will be one company disney. To welcome our new overlord disclosure, we'll be good Subject anyway, uses hearings as weak gas joy. you cover the heart of em, I think it is wild that disney has gone from a company whose earnings, like diverge, did not really pay attention to two like we oughta, be on it. Can you wrote like three or four pieces about them because they implicate so much of what's going on in the streaming wars and in consumer stuff, so give us runnin gases,
so much talk about what does need, but there's two stories right. So there's two story that disney missed their earnings gas, like that they thought they were going to do. they did Andy blamed fox, where that, specifically, they believed dark phoenix, which is an excellent movie. See you about. Eiger was like that. Just didn't. Do we It was good wage, like everyone could have told them. but they basically said. No, we bought this company, and this is our first quarter, where we really own them and so are seeing, is gonna what we assumed was going to happen because it costs so much and they weren't producing as much as we thought they were going to do and that's one story: that's like the financial story, but on the other side of it, you've got the really the more interesting one, which is that disney crossed eight billion dollars at the box office already this year, which is insane based off of like six movies and disney
is ramping up entirely soccer do streaming and gesturing like that, is their number one folk s. Can you put the eight billion box office in context cause like we have like tech earnings and, like apple just sneezes and eight billion dollars in cash? Yes out so like how big a deal is it for eight billion in the box office yeah, it's you it's not even where it eight months and not even insincere, they did seven billion last year, total enslaved, unable in already- and I have two major movies which has frozen to end star wars. The rise of skywalker come out which will both cross a billion so they're gonna make more than billion dollars a year, which is the biggest record ear biggest year on record for any studio in the history it's not fair. Applause. I bought all the other studio. Deva yeah, it's like I don't know. If four in in gm, like merged in a botany sought in their like, we sold more cars. Anyone it's like you didn't just like it here,
a bad comparison woke. The interesting thing is, if you look back far enough, what they did with movies they're doing was streaming, which is extremely slow. right. So you look back disney realized, crap, we're not making any good we're not making movies people want to see there the period after the nineties, up until two thousand and six thousand seven when disney was making a lot of garbage. So almost all the air movie their country bears, I'm in a million members, develop I remember controversy, but then, by your can send a ceo and he decides to lunch things. He buys a bunch of companies where he thinks he can make tiny networks out of sea by his lookest only by a marble buzz pixar device. I think I remember outfox I said, and his whole thing is like we can make networks that create franchises. That will then powers through
we ve seen happen. Is marble studios become one of the biggest properties in the world in terms of ip? and you ve got the sending of pigs are in their schools and then disney just like screw it. Let's just may live actually makes of oliver, Andy movie, oliver popular ninety movies, which have all cross like a billion dollars, the box office to it this is doing now was streaming- is the exact same thing they're, just they bought fox so that they can have a huge back catalogue to propel disney plus and hulu, and then they bundled that with you can pause and now so that we have all these little micro networks that they can sell at a very high price for and base leave it up to competition, so that was the other big kind of announcement. National right was that you can get disney plus hulu and he s pm plus for twelve mania right, and so it's who lose add supported at version does not add free, the number one thing people asking intruders: why can't I pay twenty bucks month and not have adds yet
so got out. Can I pay twelve dollars and just get hulu without ads and disney plus? And now we have applauded exist, the s s, room plus recur, doesn't have sport centre now. So it's might, as will be the auto yeah. Ok, there's a lot of like live major export, spitten disney genetically has to prop up espn, like that. For so long, every the thing the disney made money. I was like forcing you to have espn yeah. They can't not. They dont know how I think that we as the end as I once they go international, which is the whole game plan. They can just start working with international sports teams to sell that international markets, our towards leagues and that's a huge like market growth market for them. So we just just to be clear about the answers to those Both of those questions is no korea selling. I get alleys, not
I will now eyes at my guess, is that they eventually will be different options. Cause streaming is gonna, become cable in which means you're gonna have tears that you can subscribe to and you, Also there just nothing smarter than putting out the thing having everyone ask for something slightly different and delivering slightly different Yeah, that's a great place to be that way, but elicited yeah exactly exactly I mean I see this on twitter like right now. It's super super smart because they have three revenue options for like one product which is insane like no matter what you want to go in on they're, going to make revenue off of it, so it works out to their benefit. Really well right now, could you go back and connect the dot on disney buying all the other studios for streaming? And it's not just about the back catalogue rate. It's it's about! They! They want to be able to make
It shows based on that old ip cause. They know they'll be riots right, yeah, so there's two. So, in order for a streaming network to work a streaming service, there's a formula right, so you have to have tentpole features which bring people in, but you need snackable content with snackable content is friends. It's the it's the office. It's like I'm going to pay eight dollars a month or whatever netflix is now twelve dollars month. I paid twelve dollars a month because I want to watch stranger things, but then I'm going to keep paying because I just want to fall, too few drama or the office disney. Has that better than any one else going forward. Maybe maybe h b max from here which I know you live and die in terms of ip disney is well situated. So disney goes away. come near issuing servicing you're gonna get a new star wars. Show a new cap erica, show kind you're gonna hurt again you're gonna, get this place. You're gonna get
seven thousand hours of oliver old tv shows and over old movie, almost over old movies, that something that Netflix can offer netflix is losing all of their important licence content. So they're going come fur stranger things and stay for strangers. Yeah stay here which is essentially why netflix is kind of faith in this moment of lake. In a collar poland, like jeez. We are, we are now in a corner, and I just remember Adam saying his murder. Mr Yahoo, it did very well met for resorting to network that movie. Good was exactly perfect for having one months over as like yahoo strongly safe, Adam sandler around on the he's doing the same for yet mean it is exactly the thing that you think it s like
their price falls. There are brought about this that this thinking lately that netflix is to be heavily investing in step. That sort of like store brand content like around here that my local grocery store has flavour right and flavour right. Peanut butter is almost exactly like. If peanut butter, what isn't it's ten dollars cheaper? No, so that a actually this round. I mike Netflix makes a bunch of stuff bright and like that's this now, well supplied. The algorithm is like you sort of like shows you like a tv well. Here's some australian hgtv nonsense that we license and, like maybe you'll, just like watch it for a while and that's the issue that that's the biggest issue right now that people are facing. So there is the beginnings of a backlash on that we're seeing on twitter and instagram of all these creators, all the showrunners being like netflix screwed us over and there's continuously screwing us over, and it's because the Alec
them. So there's a show. Colchicum birdie, which is like a great great, showed similar to turbojet horsemen. It was recommend, two like no one? It was not a frumpy, it was never on the homepage. It wasn't comment. Anyone I'm someone who watches bow jack religiously. Could it's sad show person, I'm afraid, and it was not recommended to me, like I'm the ideal target for it. So when the sugar cancel after one season, netflix basically said netflix wastewater to renew something is whether or not you can bring in new subscribers or retain subscribers were likely to cancel like those that are two major metrics It couldn't do that the show run- or at least they handle what went on twitter and basically said the we can't beat the algorithm and then all these other show runners were like yup, this is an issue we bring up with netflix all the time. We don't know how you platform works. no matter what you do. There is always an opaque algorithm that said almost anything like this is the story of the internet. What do you think I tweet about? I was like
I've been covering you too for so long that from people to see show runners who once had to deal with nielsen ratings and having a bad time slot. Unlike friday, at eight p m, now they're doing there, they have the exact same complaints that you do. Craters have, which is like. We don't want to do this and we're gonna have to start creating, shows forgetting about content, actually figure out a game, an algorithm that we don't understand which is like fascinating. So I knew this like. Oh no not with there was another show that the council does. like two year delay. Well, so I was getting to that cause. I I heard the area was good and I knew that there was like this ambient fear that netflix would cancel shows and I needed something to watch when I came to new york this week and need somebody to download and I'm like. Oh you know, people like the oh there's, somebody who I won't say who in case anybody loves it who told me that was a huge mistake. It's a terrible show but whatever, and so I watched it for the first time I went through three episodes.
And then the very next day cancelled and now what do I do because, unlike into the show you asked to it, I know it ends, effort you seasons and they don't finish the narrative. What do I do only anything about this, so the netflix inflation rates of the whole. There was a report that was like netflix cancel, shows after two seasons that they don't do what they needed to do, and a big part of that, What am I right now is that netflix doesn't have a big thing. That cable relies on a law which is one adds but to its indication and if they can't be, they can't even one for seven seasons and hopefully tbs picks it up and they're, like cool, we'll just make money off friends for the rest of our lives. Netflix doesn't have that so Netflix, like h, b, o really needs you to be invested in there like they really need you be. Turning in whereas H b, o can look at okay. Well, this many people tuned in linearly there's many people tuned in on each go now afterwards. This many people change we'll go. We can win There's an audience. Netflix is reliant an algorithm to like, hopefully, maybe people saw
they didn't. They were not going to give a chance to be discovered, so I want to just backup to disney for one right in manila lost or do not talk about netflix in this case, because it is the only product that exists. like disney places, is looming. Spectre. That's coming. I believe it is a five on the internet, scale of doom streaming services that, like fifty five five yeah like gonna, say, It is the only region in a five is because it hasn't launched and thus, by definition, could fail. Rightly they could I did up any back. Oh my god, we forgot to write a user of its like who knows you happened between now and launching, but it feels very much like it will succeed, rights disney, they got, they ve got their library. They've got there, commitment to never having a new idea right, like water? New character is now having yeah sure, but, like that's very safe mineral, a meme,
by your seems now he's doing get bushes like us worst thing you can say to Julia now now two hours of both iker definitely know you like, but they're going to win. Like that's the specter over the industry, then there is all the stuff that is leaving netflix. If she were talking about some stuff is going back to it's a trio max eighteen t, tv now tv now, please, eighteen snack go to plus five g, like that's happening over there, festa joke by the way, that's the actual name of what it is. A bunch of stuff is going to revert to to disney like right now, netflix is like really promoting lotta marvel movies, which is wild. Cats, are all It's like get em You can fix just change movies tat. They just added it back to their ike apple tv up at their own. They finally added movies re. Now they only give you like three rose and then it's back to tv shows and movies tab. At a time beg. You want to watch a picture of your netflix like nasser chance somebody to happen for you again
None of its here. You get that things like the wars, there's a term that we ve used like me, I use lot right now. I was like the streaming wars, the worst early kick off and for another two years, because, although it and because of digital rights, like all the rights, are still tied up in various things, so, for example, when disney plus launches it will only four marble movies and then by the first year it will have eight marble movies. There are currently twenty three marble movies, but because this is the best one I meant, you know, I imagine whose rights are tied up in a diet. Are so tied up in with a company called epics because of a deal made in two thousand and ten, and what that shows is that all these companies didn't realize streaming was going to be a thing. Netflix did very early on. and now they're all scrambling to get their stuff back. So that's why I received a lot of money, for the office will probably be a lot of money for seinfeld, One immediate pale on my friends, so there's there's all
the things happening so string wars. We don't really know it's gonna happen until the rights go back and then, when warner media can say we have the harry potter collection. We have friends, we have all this stuff that we used to own, and that is when we'll start seeing like. Will people want to pay sixteen dollars a month for h, b, o max? So what what? What I'm most confused about? I I'd love to figure out What is netflix before it is all solid content before it is facing a competitor is losing subscribers in the united states in the united states and they're like focus on international expansion, which crazy, like for a variety of reasons like you can only a marked so many more people like a good, I think comparison of this is apple which every year for years and years, like every quarters record quarter. Why? Because after luncheon like two more countries and an aids, literally ran out of countries live now licence.
His her flat to down because there's nowhere else to go there like launching a streaming service that can do that. It's like, I hope, elon gets to mars soon, because apple sales are flat. That's where they're at with that cycle, that's the same path. Netflix is and disney disney is also betting, huge acres. In the last hour, the call that they want new scale, extremely quick. He called like disney plus hit the most important product he's launched in his tenure at disney and he's stepping down in twenty twenty one, and so that's a huge proclamation. like disney's betting, superman, streaming and they're burning super hard on international and there also betting our every kind of forgets dizzy onto also getting really hard on making hulu their h b o they want fx to be h. B. O fx wants to be h, b, o and they're like cool. That's what you guys will. We're going to have our own hbo that we are going to sell the people, What we want is having your hbo, because I would remind you that eighteen tease
resolutely diluting the idea right. We all right, it's actually very funny, so there isn't it the twin honouring our colleague television critics association conference, on land grab. Who is the chief of ethics? Who is a brilliant man? Does an annual state of the union address and he's basically said the issue facing sharing platforms? Is that none of it is cure? Is curated? There's no identity to any of these trimming. Services, which is true, disney comes This is because they are recognised by peace. So what they want to do with our facts is basically say: we're gonna get in were an increase, your staff for getting Is your oversight and then we're going to increase your output and the difference that I can see from eighteen th build based on what I'm reading. I don't actually based on what I've read eighteenth. He wants to amp up production on h, b o, but doesn't want to give them the oversight so which means they're gonna get a lot of garbage because it's like outta nowhere screen letting things vs fx wants to take over what each field has and if they have the right staff. If they have it,
have the right people to ample production actually look over, make sure it's good. They could do that and that makes hulu very, very exciting for disney. So wise, netflix netflix in some travers enhance its now before their even facing this competition or there they ve lost the content. They have dealt data. Have you they have so that when they spoke about when I spoke of losses subscribers, they said that the big issue was one price increase, this bad press increase and chew. They had no spectacular continent, they call that out. They were like. We don't really have anything literally. They were like next quarter. We great cause. We have stranger things, but they very explicitly were like. There was nothing super exciting which is it's one hundred percent true and that's the issue that netflix is running into that's, why they've become a lot more somber? If you read a lot of like trade reports, the the meetings there People have gone from being like the arrogant kids like arrogant wall street kids to be like
we we are now a cable network, and that means that we have to figure out our rising debt. We have to figure out how to bring in new shows that people are actually interested in which is why their signing massive deals right. That's why they just gave the game. It turns creators tunes in dollars for a total exquisite exclusivity, ideals you about. Why is there not any good without the bugs proven again again and again like yeah? Ok, It's like you wonder why Israel let them go because all the tweets like. Why would you let them gun it's like h, b, o watch, the fucking show that they were like by Superintendent is like. Netflix is basically facing what disney is about to face, which disney has told investors. Twenty twenty is going to be bad. It's not going to be a twenty nineteen, and you should be prepared for this because we don't have anything really in in we don't have any major marble movies, have any major early disney movies. So it's like, but the focus of that adding I wrote this was this
He wants you you're, going to go to the movie theaters, no matter what cause it's disney, but they would much. Rather, you spend eight dollars or eight dollars a month, seven dollars a month at home like they want to grow, they wanna grow to twelve million subscribers by december, which, to put that in context, is twenty percent of netflix's current us market. Like that's a that's fast, that's like we're going to scale very quickly we I think they could totally do it. I think so too, here let cause I'm gonna have the least their own disney movies right. yeah and they're? Also really they've also changed a bunch of theatrical releases to make them exclusive disney, plus releases fox is now making exclusive disney plus things they're rebooting, a bunch of stuff for disney plus. So the like they've basically said streaming to us, is just as important as
film. I mean buyers. Prodigy is now overseeing streaming like it's. Like the wistful note there was. I wish I was bikers for very clear with what you're trying to say like bob iger or do you need a new prodigy. The old one is busy like give me a call and but yeah. So it's it's exciting, but it's interesting because we're about to see a drought and then in two or three years we're about to see more tv than anyone has seen in a very long time. So we went out for few more minutes. Where does h, b, o max max h, b, o a t antigua to know how this conversation, I think Israel max is. Will you ever go ninety scale? I think it's at like a ten ok, because I think what is going to happen all the Hb now subscribers will get looped into Israel acts. They start off pretty strong, but I think what each of you has going for it is that it
it's h, b, o so they're bringing in people all on that, but plus they have the exclusive rights to lotta cw series, which is a huge thing that netflix lost cause they cw shows are some of the most watched shows on netflix sea of people tuning in, for that they also do family content, so yeah people who are like I would like to watch h b, o with my kids around, and I would like to give them shows. There's two net like there's two things, but There's enough with h o max going into it are both the movie side and the two beside that people go to a movie said anything warner. Bros makes sense anything.
Brothers, so hopefully yeah, that's a the ever popular dc. You will be available to you. This is where they're releasing the snake yeah, that's how they get people to sign up for extra max zack snyder will personally come to your house to pass. You we've got nothing else to do. He'll message you on the bureau and tell you about doing it now. He'll message you on like eighteen: these are not encrypted chat, app that is pre installed on your phone. I don't think it's going to be as successful as netflix or successful as disney. It's also not going international, but I think it'll be way better than NBC Uni's streaming service, which their whole their whole strategy is. We have the office which is a bad strategy yeah, and they it's it's. If you don't have cable, it's like definitely still worse, yeah. It's it's I going disclosure. Has investment mass media which owns the ver
sooner or later, we'll just beyond my disney. We welcome our insect overthwart, it's hard to imagine people getting bored. Watching amazing tv, but do you think there will be a tail off in people watching? Ok, the tv yeah. So there's a really great quote by John Lang graph, which is that there's never been more tv than there is right now and all that means is that great tv is being overlooked and more mediocre tv is being produced and his whole thing is like there are the last count as five hundred and thirty scripted series so right now, and that doesn't account for reality and to its interesting to think about. Like the amount it doesn't. for equity, which my rose oversight action. by thinking Why didn't you tell me how self respect you finish, the thought really you my passion. I died laws,
pretty sure Julian is adopted. The position that we will be successful if it is to hold me every cats and bury, is a very interesting. May I quit easy iron man tube streaming services clearly remains a good only scale do, but it doesn't seem to think about the fact that disney end netflix, didn't call out each other on the recent calls you didn't call out Ishmael max, they called out youtube. They said we want youtube, that's what we want which is an insane thing to want, because it's free and it's user generated content. So it's not anything comparable, but that's what they're thinking sidewise like that's what they want. They want to be the size of you. They wanna be the size of youtube which is. Are they aware? Hell has caused to enormous problems. I will kill you. What algorithm is you think they're paying attention? Okay? Well, I think you should read the story. Netflix creators have the same problems as youtube creators. I think I tweeted at that.
the issue we did it. I got an slack dm door and said you to put that on the site and she's yeah, but something something I said Eric in my previous statement to making it argument. She's busy yeah trees are busy. Why You think it's faster than it appears is, though, there's already dislike collateral damage from the streaming or scant. These cuts, it's like they're they're, rethinking how they work their subscribers are moving around their earnings, aren't where they think they should be like the disease missing. It's own guidance because of dark phoenix The phoenix is the like, even watching the trailer as the only time I'm going to watch. This movie is on an airplane yet to get airplane movie like always thought unknown. Fisheries news has a bad idea that we should movie raining scale in the movie raining sales should just be. Where were you watch this gas Is this a theatre movie this is a pay for it in the first window. Is it wait
It's your annoying weak for it to be a rent, or is it sooner or later it will be a net liked, syndicated, yeah somewhere or is it like just wait, for it did this feedback I read somewhere in there. You need to put like like playing nonstop. Unlike t anti yeah, you You always watch the middle third of this movie. You will never really know what happened in the first half an hour this and I wrote a whole opinion, peace and to date it is probably one of the the peace that made people. The angriest is just that the boss baby is the best airplane movie cause. It's a great movie I'll watch the boss baby on an airplane. So now what what happens? Next? What should people be looking out for in the streamers, because there's like It is no wonder that what's the key thing is you look out between november in April, because we ve got one two three four service in launching so including quiver, including levy in April April? Sixth, the date in my

I have discovered that all embracing all of the teams are waiting and there are eight being because it's really easy to pass a jewel. And so, if you don't own the jewel and the meme on Tik tok is: can you pass the jewel and so What I'm saying is biometric security or just a fingerprint sensor, so that you have to actively have your finger print on the jewel right? So in your friend who was hijacked by the way, my you should be vaping, I'm just saying that I'm just I'm just trying to the problem that we are faced with right now knew
friend, wants the jewel, and you say sorry. I can't because a cyber security, and because you you'd have to like hold up to their mouths with the finger print. I assure you that this will not start nicotine arabs, who knows that's a great idea, because it'll be veto like you can't have the sweet moment where you like share your buds, was with some aim or negative. The sweep over you hold the jewel for that all this is bad was only or teams are the greatest threat to american democracy. A year s o my get. This might you're right. I might be wrong it s, so, on my show right watch too much its biggest market. This might be romantic, but for any of your friends who are asking you to pass the jewel and they're, not even your best friends, you might have good eyes, and I say as the job like this complex technologies to stack when you take the side of a blue bubble.
God, swine babe. So here s the thing about the smart jewel in particular is the problem they are trying to solve. Is kids are addicted to nicotine right, and they keep denying that like a major, Part of their business is selling jewels teenagers bright, but we would never do that. Never and they release this product. That's like it's a blue tooth babe the parents can lock from their teens little toy other stuff. All of that is to get you to buy? another jewel so that your kids will stop using the jewel. in the way they could really solve is by stop selling the jewels two teenagers. I love it. I it's like the perfect evil corporation move where they're like oh, this car might hurt you. The solution is to buy a new car. Not we should have never designed the banker.
Firstly, the thing that I love as they need to solve the kid problems, so they ve created a connected blue to that that collects a bunch data and that's what I want is a company that funded I rarely buy big tobacco and is big tobacco at this point know here's a bunch of data we were just talking to the streamers. I would pay twelve ninety nine a month for a real time, map of teens vaping just like in you know like in others those videos like the sun for the earth and you can see what parts of earth are? it's a day, and it's wonderful just imagine that, but it's like vape clouds spreading over america like I would pay twelve ninety nine a month for that that screensaver, okay, I mean that's like the purist, dystopian screensaver, okay, speaking of dystopia apples listening to everybody is this: do you know where it occurs? To me, I haven't s samsung about bixby Ed
teachers and starting up in all its do like one guide aware, it has been like argues, asking billet dog, butler record everything, and then they give it took contractors. But the contractors are dogs what what did we learn anything from the bixby grading yeah? Well, there's there's the one dude who's asking for the dog butler two days straight. The rest of the group is like whoop, go what's going on Syria is anything. This is a real thing. All the all. The digital assistance are recording your voice. Storing, recorded versions of voice on their servers and allowing human contractors to occasionally listen to those recordings so that they can tell whether or not the thing worked yeah. So amazon got caught first and
The deal was like a bunch of people inside amazon who shouldn't have access, had access and when they heard some stuff that seemed bad, so amazon, what they created a whole new portal for lists, seeing what all the stuff is it that you've said and like deleting it, and you can even now ask alexa to stop, recording you or delete your last days recordings or whatever. Then it happened to Google. Google also has a portal where you can go and just delete stuff, and it also happened to then apple apple does not. I have such a thing. Yeah apple is, has a blind spot in my opinion, because they they they think everything happens on devices is totally secure, and so it doesn't occur to them that you they would need to provide you like a privacy dashboard cause like. Why would we need to have your privacy dashboard? We don't know shit, there's nothing to manage yeah except there is because they're saving recordings of your voice now, you can now go and like santa wanted, like amazon, has the option don't be created by humans? Google? I He has an option now, yes, it does, and
syria is just that they just stopped doing it. They just put it on pause, probably cause they don't know how to make a button to give. You have to turn off in order to turn off siri. What you have to do is like turn off the way you turn on siri, so you have to turn off the button and turn off the Hey siri, and then you need to go into the keyboard. Settings and turn off dictation and then, as you do, that a possible warning saying: hey you're, going to lose a bunch of stuff now and then delete your data in there now, when you upload your stuff gets uploaded to apple's cloud, it's anonymized from you, so I think it keeps like voice recognition data to maybe get close to you. I don't fully know the whole story here, but my understanding is, you know with hashes or something my hands are waving. You can see that if, if you delete all the serious stuff it can get rid of the stuff, that's on the server, even those anonymous from you in the first place. Somehow that could happen. I just want to be clear reason there doing. This is well intentioned yeah. They want to make sure that it works, writes a yes, a elections in iraq,
make some gas step and you got around he said again and at some point, human reviewer gets a random assortment of alexa commands that didn't work that didn't work out in it. It tries to figure out with it here. She they try to figure out what went wrong yet fix alexa right and that training process is important to how the model works bub and that training process. You know it's like it's not the best job, so it ends up going to contractors, and then you start having like levels of remove of control and oversight over, who is listening and voice and by the way, the weight of this scott discovered is lit, a contractor leaking the stuff yeah to really was a dutch newspaper yet riah. So That's the nightmare scenario. Is the contractor took the voice recordings away in and showed them to? Somebody gets book, contrary to amazon and Google's position, is that yes, we love spying,
you and we are working on being better at not spying on you as much therefore were offering you some control apple seems too. Want anybody to know that latvia, Did this feels like a big betrayal to me because apple his position itself as the privacy company that advertising as the privacy company, and they don't put a button like dataset, like maybe they're, just waiting until they have the software, but if they do say I will just never tell our customers that this happening like because of what the button says is. If you don't uncheck this, then we will listen to recordings of you right, so that would involve admitting to their customers. They'll have very fuzzy ways of defining what this human grading is because there's two levels of it there's the out. You will you allow humans, listen to it or not in order to improve our services and whatever amazon actually played some word games initially or their like it will be. Do you want
do you want to use your voice to help us improve new services and no doubt and that cool then I'll be done, but the g. Did you hear what I said? Do you want to use your voice to help us improve new services on checking the button? Only turned off human review to opt in for the new things they made. It didn't turn off even review for other stuff. Oh my god, so there's that's a human review side of it, the human grading side. The second part is: is your voice being stored on their servers? Full stop? Can you like delete it, or can you tell it never to get uploaded in the first place between Bull, amazon and google. Only one of those companies gives you the option to never have your voice saved on its servers, which one do you think it is google, Google, I pick the one that seem the least likely ass her I don't think so. You can delete yourself, but you like, if, once you turn on the assistant it records, so I'm gonna just take this in every direction like others have leaked every companies doing it. It all got found
because journalist asked apple rushed out its announcement because a bunch of journalists, including us, were asking. over and over and over again in these policies, didn't really add up, but thing I just think you come back to this. Nobody knows they we're doing. This is buried in terms of service agreement that you like bang through when you set up a phone whereby a Google home. No reads the terms of service agreement, even if you do their work in such a way that they they collect, consent yeah, I'm like air, quoting They collect consent from you in this area consenting to this practice, but like it's Are we to understand what the practice actually the don't play my voice to strangers? It just seems could be phrased it that way, maybe more, people would say no, but they need some people to say yes to make it better. This is all berry like there's no way that people are actually consenting to this end, the council that its anonymous is obviously pseudonymous, really yeah. It's your voice,
nato is clearly can be correlated with your device idea, because there is a way to delete it. So I just to me that issue is sort of less. Are they all stood? what are the? What are the granular? Like that's important, where covering a story there odyssey there feeling some pressure to get better, but if they are feeling that push if the reveal of the thing makes them stop doing it right. Like that's the pattern in revealing that it's happening makes them like stuff. then they should know like. Then it should be obvious that you should, ask way more directly and make it way more obvious. Boy saying hey, thing. You're doing is happening in their like now. What will stop apple asks if I think all these companies Do you want to send this crash report right, yeah yeah? How is that any less sensitive, then a recording of like a transcription of a text message, I'm sending you. I think that that
well where the computer to crash where there's a? U I write, That is good and you are either there's also like. What's in the log to read the log like, but if the crash words actually accordingly, railways and screaming, crashed it. I just think there's something about these, in particular, where it the surveillance, actual so high that the user here that surveillance is high yeah, it's not yet outbid. Doesn't yet way the convenience of having a smart speaker rags, that's pretty fun, but sort of like underlying the fbi, is listening to me. Meme is like there. Facebook is us, since we all the time right, like everyone, if that were not it's true. If you can accept, back into it. With a contractor leading to a newspaper a bunch of recordings of people like you should maybe rethink that and maybe do ask I. This is like the steve jobs go to court
to see what is privacy, you ask you ask yet, and you ask again, you just keep asking, because you cannot collect that consent. Once really people change lives like that's a fluid idea of what privacy, and none of them are good at asking. All them rely on extremely opaque terms of service agreements that I'm gonna tell you right now, I think, should be legal. Well, I think, should be legal. What's the alternative to a terms of service privacy regulations, ravages, like I don't mean to say, is I think my answer. Everything is very short, I dont think our government is like that great. Like do. I want to turn that power over to this government. I do not, but I just mean very abstract way, an individual user. Does I m a meaningful to differentiate between different products in terms of service at the point of purchasing you're in a vessel, there's? No like information in front of it? Senegal sent. That's like here? Are the settings for amazon not storing your voice? Like you,
information you don't even see the thing, and so you get the thing home and plug it in what about? And you don't have like the market information to make that and no one's a lawyer, known reads should anywhere so, like who? How do you? How do you expect Ass, the like the the will of the people it's like? Well, we're just going to negotiate as a group with these companies and, like that, looks like here's what we will accept in years, where we won't accept and we've just codified in law, here's what you can do and what, if like a very abstract way, I I do not think like Donald trump sure at a privacy regulation. So why do you think that eula and terms of service exist because they need to collect those consents? They need to collect those contents, because I want to do stuff, and then I want to get sued. It's like fundamentally than I wanna get sue one other has a very there's. A mostly internet cannot exist without amount of copyright licensing right right. So if you take a photo on your phone,
Do you want, I clung to back it up inherently and you, the european published, are important. World right. Inherently apples gotta make a copy. It's gotta go to an icloud server Then they gotta make another copy that further to like back it up redundant. We then, if they want to betsy you're they want. But I message that my ship into somebody else your message they've inherently made yet another. Fifty copies of the thing right so like just to operate that I'm going to take a photo. It's going to get automatically backed up to my icloud and I'm going to text it to someone apple needs like fifty five copyright licenses from you or blanket. Copyright. Listen! So is that, like normal, like every service in an consider, instagram, which has two like take far more permissions from you so like ok, like I caught a by it like in order to do that. Like should we have started with a government, copyright law and licensing scheme should these services have developed right right, but I think now they're exist. We understand them. It's one thing to say: hey you're, putting you
personal information in the linked in lincoln. I share it or we promoted and they can make at school when he is linked in. Unlike the features are somewhat apparent to you, yeah, so there's a relationship there with privacy like it is just absolutely opaque. I have no idea what's going on in their motivation is to hide it and it doesn't turn into a feature like privacy. Isn't a feature. That's why apples to market it all the time or it's the phones operate the same, whether or not google is watching everything you do on android or whether apple is like making it is. I mean. There's there's also like that there there's a tough edge cases are like. I was listening to an interview with a calibre who interviewed facebook, and so like, ok well play around with a happy eyes and see what I can do before I get this interview and he realized that facebook messenger showed nearby. I and that that information, while not saying specifically where people are, could be
correlated with other information, relatively easy to say exactly where people are. and create a map of where all your friends are, which is obviously the and so if facebook got mad at him and they get the job and they they fix. That That was up. There was a flaw right, and so that's the sort of saying that maybe the eula I'd indemnifies is that the right word yeah protect. Facebook from me suing them for being bad at their job. when facebook was like in front of congress the many times they've been in front of congress. One of the things that I got asked was how many times do we change your terms of service agreement right and it's like hundreds, if not thousands of times they make little tweaks that and you just click. Yes, like the itunes terms of service, became a meet. My late night comedians were talking about it because apple is constantly tweaking it around the edges. Now,
Do any of those specific tweets mean anything to you like? No, are you effectively signing a new contract every time you do that absolutely or that's like that to me like we're. Just at a point, particularly one word talk, things like, they retain the right to take recordings. Your voice and not other people, listen to them. Even if the intention is good in the air, it makes a service better. You shouldn't be able to just like hide that in one of these agreements. Public absolutely wants you to just be illegal right like it that the market cannot speak too, that enough next month apple. My change, it's a dream it back in like we it's on us and it's our job, I'm happy to do it. just like scanned the agreement and write the headline and generate the outrage cycle, and they, like that's a, I think, that's just a bad cycle. That's a bad process for protecting people's privacy.
Verses hey, we made some rules as we understand it. Do you think that could be something like the creative commons licence? Where, like I have like an alternative you like, if, if a company presents me with ayala like actually, I would prefer this ula and it's like you know so. Well, what are you? What are you fundamentally describing in describing a negotiation in like you are not allowed to negotiate like who who signs a conscience? Like you, everyone does a mission like you're, not supposed to sign a contract with a lawyer reading it and like making sure it's a pretty no mean like you're supposed to not supposed must take the first offer you, like fight for yourself, I'm that's my fear what these cookies with. If they say you want cookies, I want to say absolutely unless I am deep in to the process of logging in or buying something from you yeah, I've been like that, so I mean, like, I think,
We can argue a lot about. The gdp are like. It is an open question that how effective it's thin and like whether its actual stopping so the staff, with its benefit, any comments or whether its opening up the markets like parents and besides there, but at least it's their right like there's our, Work in the european union for like how they stopped at your privacy what they should offer you it's your point websites in european union when they said you want cook. If you say no, they are required to still provide you a service right. They can't they can't block you cause. You dont want their cookies. That's great right, like you, can't get that from like a collective action market solution. Rather, you have to just say it's the law so like either that's his coming. We talk a lot. I just every time I hear this stuff about syrian x. I think about it. There's no way any what he knew. This was happening in the second. They found out that the second was revealed. Always companies scramble the chain.
but that's an indication they knew they were doing some stupid right. There wasn't wheat, we're gonna, write, fifty blog posts, justifying it and there's more more hide and eventually, like yeah the celebrity tweets about how they hate it and like now, taylor swift is matt and like that, then you know what I mean like there's that, You know the story, but then there's the what actually happened, which is the second aim and find out about the right to opt out our bad via that these are the biggest companies in the world. They shouldn't get off that easy, enea. Every turn us airy now, Google assistant elixir, don't have an anymore. I have Google assistant okay me! Neither! I will say that I have set all of my google stuff to their auto delete settings yeah, whatever the strictest one in three months. I feel zero guilt about that yeah. I turned everything I could off on Google, except I guess
turn off assistant editor. I never use series, so there's no danger, and that was me. The weird thing is like the the companies that probably are the worst at doing stuff. Other data have the best controls because they keep getting caught. Yeah, that's exactly right. Cessation will just keep catching them actually, eventually will respect for all the illusion is to abandon them and will allow them to to to wither away yeah. Maybe that's the market solution. That problem is that their giant monopolies that control like eighty percent of all advertising dollars in america like open, open source software, open hardware stuff that you can audit stuff that it doesn't send telemetry back to a central. I serve decentralized as much as possible, like I think it it's it's as well as they like, no matter what laws are added to this situation. I think it's something that it's gonna ultimately be on us to try to protect ourselves from the sure. You should also build your own car in turn your and butter, but the problem is people are busy.
it's true. I agree with you. I absolutely agree with you, I'm a computer nerd. I've done, I did those things are a long time. It's not why they are popular like I wish there was some market dynamic that made this better. Obviously right. What do I want? I want competition, but there is competition. Three biggest companies, the world are like four cardona got caught that stuff, like the four biggest companies in the world are competing. Cortana got caught doing stuff on skype, translate which is like direct actual conversations. People are heavy, which is like a whole other thing, they're competing on every metric except privacy and that's wild to me. Anyhow, I don't mean to keep ranting about it. It's just after we got through the things are actually happening to me that the bigger issues, no one is giving meaningful consent to this kind of crap. Okay, I'm going to say it because it's true, I had the apple card, it's a it's a credit card as there,
and nice. App apple really wants it to be the the default yeah. That's it like. I don't I'm going to try to review it. Does it make you feel richer, especially if you have another credit I was having raised like not have very Credit cards like always pay that on time to never hear right like bad it. I hear my dad's voice mad I know there are people out there who love their credit. shuffle. Like do other point stuff. Snob me of ai weiwei She did that reveals that I dont know how to do a scam. You now right and I kind of wish I did. I also wish I knew how to juggle like there's a lot of stuff. I wish I see just facts like keep. You nope everybody here and try to juggle doesnt, unlike gap, still don't do it well, you know how how to learn to juggle, as you do with the racket balls cause they bounce. So the bend over yup, all the juggling balls! It's america balls! I max, and I are going to learn how to juggle that's a good thing. You do with the kid right she's only one and a half she's not going to any good
but one day that's that's my pick, my not acting all right up. There is good at math juggling ability. I was the one thing that makes me sad about: the apple card is there's more than one thing, the tooth. The main thing is that it like it definitely ties you to an iphone like you have your iphone customer for ever and ever to your credit card, or I message or mass. The card in particular is lake, but like all the stuff that they do to mixed easy to pay and like the app and the budgeting is so much better than meant yeah. It is like a beautiful yeah, and I think the fact that that's only limited to apple card purchases is like, oh well, maybe someday they'll, just apple should just take over all the finance. No, I don't. I disagree. Here's what I want I mentioned. I wrote about it. You can read the post. We have to of you. It am. I something to verges on the business of reviewing credit cards like we're, not gonna, review like in annex card next, in l, a
but it's interesting. It is fundamentally technology product, just tweeted me and let me know what you want to know what the apple card, so I can figure out what to do with it. Next, besides, like myself, gazing at it like, I dunno, it could get to the you should by the thing and then like reversal charges. You know, like the annexes, really good, like added by this, ok fraud. I showed you credit rapid. Their company start return this another like yeah, that sucks built will handle it. And then you don't fraud, antifraud, don't crimes!
It's okay, please suggest what you want me to do, except for crimes or an interested in what you want to know from from, like the verge perspective, I'm sure their credit card- and we know a bunch of people- were the points guy, I'm sure they're going to do a great job, reviewing the card as a credit card, I'm much more interested in what you want about the tech side of it. Okay, we're way overtime, wouldn't be averse, Cassidy didn't say it. We say I really wanted to be short this week and we weren't season valley.
