The meat eater podcast coming at you shirtless severely beaten in my case underwear, listen to the podcast. You can't predict anything. The only do you know. Do you remember? How did we get nor has the Missouri turkey's are the hardest turkey's too hot and the whole wide world partially out on all the reasons. A part of it is because my friends, guided worth from who are from Missouri EAST. I say that Yeah. That's our hunter hunting turkeys in sorry, killings he's in the rascal and theirs yeah, but you really have an hundred turkey. Let me tell you about these hurricanes down down here were from yeah. So that's does we're sorry for me. I think that come I have
in nebraska, but my understanding of it in the type of turkey. This run around there, could see that that might be true The Missouri is harder than that, but I merited Missouri the hardy? How many states hundred turkey's in parker alive have the automobile I don't know that more than a dozen more than a dozen for sure, her brain, I beseech you to turkey's and half a dozen or so but I got a theory on why people say the hardest to kill nets, because at a time in our country, when so many game species would be an extra baited. The wilder was able to hold on just in a small amount down here in southern missouri and the ozone in the ozarks and then in the nineteen thirty's when they really started trying to turn things around with conservation and start their game survey on turkey's starker leopold that was down your workin on the wild turkey
These turkey's ended up becoming the basically the stock that was used. not only re populate other parts missouri, but in Missouri turkey's were taken to us concept in Indiana and other midwestern states. The the whole repopulation of the wild turkey across the eastern united states has a lot to do with these turkeys that were just unkillable in the butt I feel, like I've heard though the Missouri is now the only hold out that there were there were others hold out. I've heard that about swamps, south carolina, hurry and out of an album had hold out north itself care north carolina, high country right self, caroline, lower country that certainly true the reserve is other place. There is the rules down a nineteen states. but I do have some numbers somewhat: some unknown number and maybe not specific on all of its known for sure, was somewhere around that mistakes easier and more
thursday or more states. Now most those days or price out these- and I feel like that, were you most calmly here that they are we the hardest. Tavis turkey's like here and now that the because they couldn't I because they could have michigan because they got em all like they got em all, and then there are by that. The top is because they got the whole field of bans known. There has been here, they know it and rugged remote rule country, a lot of its hard to get into mean it's hard to freedom from the robes in some. These places you gotta get way back in there and they found little pockets where they can hold out. You promised you answer me how many If you want to turkey a half dozen or so montana, south dakota new york, Indiana, Missouri, texas, okay, so you've got around fair bit yeah
and in part park he wanted up in a bowl or places I have in your old man handsome hard hey. Does it does and has actually gotten my mom and haunting them hard. So yeah, I don't know I dunno how it happened, but all of a sudden she's she's chasing a man. She She started you see, is yes the disease in those in call better and me in the whole thing, is into it start in florida. Yes, start in florida and then in whatever you hunt them in florida. for it is in February nodes afforded the the season comes into their lives, are breeding investing in February february. A future needs migrate, northward yup, north west,
so they'll wind up where, by the end of the year down in mexico or what last year, your dad ended up in mexico this year. I don't know what the plan is. Another there in texas have or they've already banned. I dunno he's got several turkeys unders under his belt, and I get the get. The picture starting in February know we're still snow here and in dad's already, you know not going back to spring turkey, so get out of here now we showed up here the other day I was this catalogue amazing the difference from the decisions on our full on poor, my fingers in making inside my gloves. Parker gets no doubt opening day, yeah northern parlous state where an interest snow and twenty five miles per hour winds and as the snow pellets. We're hitting me in the face of questioning my sanity, but after waiting for, for a year, man chemisette announced
we want agrees. We were spoken, the word stove on monday, and now we need the air conditioner plugged in on Wednesday. Yet down here too, we say south central missouri. in the ozarks, that's right and down here- and it looked like me and when we showed up here to hunt it look like, I was not feeling- MR, it look like just winterton it did. The trees are bought it out. That's been it's been abnormally long winter. Here, our youth season. Typically, we see a harvest of about four times and birds, and this year we only had seventeen hundred. It was nineteen degrees. On opening morning, youth season had my my daughter out, dressed like. It was a november deer, dear hunt, so it was pretty horrible. Candy and in that held on until opening day No other really broke yesterday that really like caught heavy duty under the
It's kind of nice testament to what the weather can do to you. When your turkey hunt, we hunted have a property, that's just a private peace grounds, overloaded with turkeys, and we heard one gobble. Each day we had five youth hunters on the property and nobody killed a bird, and I would have bet going into it four out of five. Not five out of five year. They just weren't move and they were all blocked up still nor winter flocks, and it was just horrible conditions. yeah and we showed up here, the tornado, so cold and I'm sleeping in a sleeping bag or sleeping in mummy bags sleeping in old, schooler, open tat worthy calls things. Those are butler bags, no relation, but you know me like type obeys even have a name, the classic. Sleep bag, rectangular sleeping bag there that no matter how thick it is. You still feel breeze coming into the top of the thing people complain about lonely bags. Little bag is like a genius invention. You can. You could fit
The door- I don't dog, you have in your sleep, sleep a great, but you could stuff you could fit ten. Zero degree mommy bags in that sleeping bag. and that when you're in a mummy by your shoulders are all constricted, I get it for backpacking editors, like I'm snuggling with my wife, man took em spoon with my way by china. Only beg you not to sleep, but the bag makes me You like, I am, and so I sleep better. I just like those cannabis yet, and I was like taken a breeze in due time, my bag, if you come back, I will have a mummy bag I like that, want to just I just can't hadn't slept and warn those for so long. I kind of forgot. It wasn't aware that we're still manufacturing them. But I understand, but just the point now how on turkey like it wasn't we showed up here on turkey's? I wanna see I'm expecting come up on the water holes and see little tadpoles it on the wall
old coming to life, that's part of the majesty of spring turkey season is year. Therefore, the awakening of all things juries and is everything's bud. Now, birds build nests the whole. It's like insects are coming up alive. I think that made the hunting harder to the fact that the woods are still so wide open, though I'm in parker, our new situation, this mornin, where wages had nowhere to hide the little girl Ourselves do my job the way to production. I suppose. What did you see? I don't have to you, but you know my dad really really worry shades of when we do that when I was gonna get to it, but since it's important to do it now, as oh dealing cards. We will start with me and and move this away. Are you the dealer and the dealer? Well, then, we wouldn't start with you if, if we're doing as we're dealing cards
good boy did be shot. Maybe random, brandon butler, the executive director of the conservation federations, steve jones on a board member, the conservation federation, Missouri and yeah and I saw you guys- are talk and business yet. I know you're involved in all your board member and also board. Member of a measure hunters for fair chaser organisation, its working on chronic wasting disease topics. Gotcha gives real, quick spell out long as we're in the interest of key real quick spell out what the federation does. There were missouri largest profit conservation organization. We really work on education, advocacy and through partnerships. We have, and he too affiliated organizations or the group that can bring together hunters and anglers with bird watchers and parks enthusiasts. We can
we bring everybody together to to focus on natural resource policy. A couple of big issues that we deal with here in Missouri is: we have a unique constitutional authority for our department of conservation and we work to advocate, on behalf of that and the dedicated funding that we have through a few sales taxes and any other fringe issues that come up like chronic wasting disease is a big one force in the last couple of years, but really those those kind of key issues of constitutional authority and dedicated funding for the depart, conservation. You aren't you know like this, but the thought about this real, quick right now, because we spend time time talking about how wild life work is. Funded in the? U s and rise, pointing out that sufficient game agencies draw the bulk of their funding from excise tax. Guns and ammunition, other sporting goods, equipment and sales of licences, tags and stamps so basic,
the hunters and anglers fund wildlife conservation at the state level, but Zuri wanted and put in a way that it little itty bitty teeny sales tax. Like oh of a penny, to one eighth of assent, and the adds up to the tune of one hundred and twenty million a year. That's pretty incredible! It really is If people voted this in nineteen, seventy six, We also have a secondary sales tax that supports parks, soil and water, and people have to re vote on that every ten years and in missouri in the two thousand and sixteen election, the november election. When we saw our country so divided, we pass that vote to self, impose a sales tax, a one tenth of a cent sales tax with eighty point, one percent of the vote and we passed it in one hundred and fourteen out of one hundred and fourteen counties. So we got to eighty point, one percent of missourians to agree
the self tax themselves to fund our state parks, healthy soil and clean water in the other. So we know that twenty percent of people Missouri hate mother nature that man, how very weren't lady so does that. Now, the only way reduces. Does the eagle gasped ass and then also the producer, parker parker hall him, a wildlife biologist with the us department of agriculture will see you coming at this perfect you're. Coming at this with you, I'm coming at you today, as a lowly, defeated Missouri ozark, turkey hunter okay. So that that your angle, that's my angle, not speaking as a professional just a loser if a loser whose add close calls so get down here to do this in its like. Remember that right. We met up brain, I said
You hear me gobbles, the answer, but you were just like man. I was nerves, honesty guys came a long way to hunt turkey's it's not like you on some euro major expedition, so you drive and all the way down here on turkey's I wanted im sure you had a good haunt and the kind of hunt that I think you guys enjoy back country hunting and show you that even in the eastern you know or midwestern part of the country, we can find places really rural and remote and and get miles back in there. But if you can hear him goblin, it's not like you can set up on an egg field and glass form. There's you know you gotta be able to hear him goblin these hills to be able to locate him after him, and they were not talking on Monday, I it had everything going against that were stiff wind, a very cold, a stiff wind.
And just like that kind of wintering. This man, like no leaves on the trees extremely noisy to walk around here, is different than any season I've ever seen before and like turkey's ago spy from a thousand miles away, and he can't you can't up on because the leaves are so damn noisy and is so windy within is no cover later. The leaves make it like leaves on the trees, make the kind of move around a little bit without every turkey in the world. Nor knew there were here man, it's like You know you comic, as is so loud to them. I know you comic, as is not leaves or hunting just big oak. Worst, there's not a lot of undergrowth at any time a year, but usually there is at least some some foliage on the saplings and, unlike you said, you'd blend into that, but its wide right now, young we left here will first we had a deal, the austrian people. We
we had a dog to stray dogs, try to accompany us and though there and then we got out and one about a big ridge, and plan was just go up and listen and make racket, because when you like in this Are we trying to try to find a male turkey, which he called Tom recall a gambler? you try to find a male turkey and make an coax it in sounds of a female turkey in your sort, is trying to say- for what normally goes on as well as jellia understood is jellia tie. My god there goes out and gobbles but I will go well come to him for years. I do a switch sat around and in somehow entice him into coming to you and is a ton reasons he doesn't want to do this. The first step in this spring hunting is just to find a gambler.
and you generally find gobbler by hearing his gobble. Are things you can do to make him gobble calmly. Before gets light out, you do thing just called they caught shock. Gobbling. No one knows party, you ve no idea. No one knows why, but for whatever reason, this a real vulnerability to the species for whatever reason in the spring of the year and other times a year to gamblers gobble, loud sudden noises I have heard gathers gobble to using add when I get done all start us. Do it like this. I will start
As the deal out risk that being shot, I will name a thing that I've heard a gambler gobble to go round the room until we ve exhaust and when you wondered when the tat, when you gotta tell about tap out car horns when you shoot there, buddy pepper, thunder car doors, rumble strips on the side of the road, no doubt donna. Yeah, that's good and just simply going hey real loud the words poodles, crows jake brakes, woodpeckers, a sonic boom dogs barking known to date, yet no hawk screaming goose, really honking yup.
in horns. Redtail hawk the sound of they, the people who don't know better dub over baldy eagles. But when you are assortment as a ball player nuclear noise at the ready so a red yard. I can tell you that I can take you right now. Show you the tree I was under when it happen before whether backfired, kyle heroin, maybe run now and. Any noise works the out until half an hour, more observant, rumble strip, rumble strips yeah, so stuff like that may, They live satisfy the show that america sumter will primo the great. Oh maker will primo is trying to put his finger on. Why gathers gobble
the noises and he was seized, add something to the effect of its just him saying this is, a time of the year, but oh tangier too. So if you try to hunt turkey's needs, the dark in the morning. You go Just our raise in Iraq is to try to get one to gobble People bring, I think, like a little bit too much thought to it, because we use, I didn't ask for a private predator calls. So I just take a rabbit, squealer predator call and give it the most loud heinous sudden squeal That I can out there because it really carries, but somebody but would say oh yeah, but you'll never come in that direction because he thinks that something's killing a rabbit over there. So people judge how to shot gobble by making more benign sounds such as crows a body Eric
he's the peacock call for some reason which he fell. Didn't send any message to turkey because he's never heard a peacock before I preferred one is a critical If you agree with that guides bad to these kyle hour and then try to call a turkey in their thousands or if you go to work I was I think you're, given him too much credit, thereby lot do they haven't. There are those who believe that amazing instincts and self preservation and senses, but I don't think I can credit on with that much smarts but it just makes sense to use a sound that you know their use to heron like a crow or like a hotel, You know that we in europe, like the big, not the first move, He was dead, quacks, so windy when you up there. all manner of those all manner of ours, goin off up there and they're, not gettin gobbles. Well, they
do get gobbles when the merger goblin year, they really do Then I take my crew and I do I do a thing called that I'll call that I just yesterday decided dubbed the core of it because I take it, roll call and blow with the cadence of a pissed off blue J, and I get inadequate, to test near I am basically, I am a very effective glitter of gobbles better than I am of calling turkey's like outcome. I specialize in getting doesn't give them the gobble by taking a very unusual sound it so aiding that yanez, as will always want to ask for time to get away from me before I do that kind of noise that worked yesterday just give them the god so
I opened the squeal and asked when to go. Do this and nothing happens to the first morning, run off the pit. Bull go up the hill, nothing! you may the joke. That was like Rachel carlson's silence. Spring like this it was spring happening yeah it was. It was depressing. You know. I've been planning this for a few months with you and I'm thinking we'll go up the spot, where I always hear birds gobble from and will deploy in teams you guys go after this. Bird goblin will go after this bird goblin and there was nothing I had enough, and so we went yeah. I was even thinking bad thoughts, bout. You guys go noticed this. The most god forsaken village, We walked along you and I never heard a bird gobble that whole day you can
one until one for turkeys. Yes, yes, I've got to quit hunting deer in the middle of the day. Right now, it's just a turkey thing and there's a there's, a group of us. In fact, the federation passed a resolution to in favor of extending it to all day. We've talked to the biologist. We see no, scientific data, no scientific reason not to let it go all day. The fact of the matter is: is it it's a divided issue between really the old timers and the new turkey hunters and was the reasoning behind it. Well, I really no scientifically yeah scientifically. There's no reasoning behind it. Well, the early days of wild turkey research. The theory was bought up the biologists that birds needed a break to make sure they could get to the root that they wanted to. without being disturbed in that they needed that that quiet time to be- were successful meeting. and it was a logical idea- just turned out- do not be true.
By then it was already an established tradition, yeah so, see there. I obey the part about, I don't understand the roost part, but I don't think that these birds like here only they have like a lot of roost vitality and they pay freely, move around ruse wherever the hell they want to roost. One thing I don't like about it I mean not just for me personally and people that, like the turkey hunt, but you know kids in school, you know you get out of school at three o'clock in the afternoon a lotta, a lotta guys want to go in the evening, turkey and they can't so it really hinders getting youths out. Turkey, hunting, yeah how's that even talking about, why would of cause you're yeah? You can't say one hundred all day there were one hundred to one have until one all day and miss turkey terms, missouri characters on all day, but meanwhile, meanwhile,. Yahoo have an entirely different experience, the most different
probably most folks in Missouri them more in this by a few other so god got what I got well, maybe some court, stay with global warming. The wind was blowing, but yeah you made my turkey story. Please do we are we. four years after the spot, starved and then ran in I wouldn't go here here is giving us all the options and even I've never set foot there. So, unlike you, may call you guys decided to go down the ridge and yet can appoint me towards two different ridges that I should work? And- and off, so went out one and quickly re. there's some private property, I don't wanna be fought around the edge all morning sawdust her eggs is like tens of thousands acres of yeah It's going other directional walk for miles through how I, like it
actually and yeah. So I literally just went over one ridge and started walking down to what you described as a knife ridge. You know it's at times Steve's ashikaga thing we're back on. It today allows almost like man made feeling cause it's so eve on either side also perfectly. On top it's pretty of the romans made a ridge. Did you come over the real name for it? I call the hourglass. We look Topical matters like hourglass phenomena are called levy. The levy It's like a man made ridge like super steep hedge and then someone came in and grated off the top there. You want walk down it drunk at night. You fall off that thing. It's a long way I know, but it's like it almost has like a it's like you're walking on the levy yeah. You know, I'm gonna dig in there. It's it's all. People are realize, but it's like this, like this argue No wonder the world people are realised. Anyhow, mayans thirty, on
yeah, don't get by a hundred yards down their rage and in the way- and I can just might sound like a gambler inside our love and feeling for middle, like people might be thinkin wondering why you mean it might be a gobbler its. yeah he just the the sound is, is because that's all you're trying at that point you're not even trying to look for a turkey you just trying to hear one and so your brain, is in their mode. In the same way, it's in there, those who has really been glass in four hours, and you like our dear wasn't here, you know, use like looking through the woods all day long. You started to make up dear sightings. Well same thing happens in the more in listening for gathers, like maybe maybe could it in and especially in the way and as our kind of noise carrion agenda so based This is very, very faint doubled. if you listen, we're will be that
all of a sudden, you be with a body and you both turned to each other cause you so desperately want to have what you think you might have heard verified, and each person has the same feeling insult in the woods you find. The often like are weeping your head around. Looking her view with like to hear that. ok tell I did now and I usually have a letter that they both heard it one guy, is the north and I got poyser that south east but I saw eventually it turns out that it is indeed a turkey goblin, Annie's goblin. As I get closer, I can hear these goblin quite often, and that's problem every out or no data points five to ten seconds, In essence, we got hammering not quite brad called choking
better use, worthy call, georgia, the hammer- and it was very nice level- Is he good, as it gets easier dudes in georgia start shooting when that happens and the adjutant he was on the ridge across roaming? I could tell you he's below me an elevation and not knowing that country real well, he was on the ridge the where you guys can art eyeballs, but he was like you, are opposing slope of housing. Slopes met in the bottom, yes,. so I decided to bail off the ridge and, my time and work towards the sound that he's making and our Hopefully, in the woods are so open their points. I could see the other ridge. I could see the ground cover. Only the ridge and ours
so my fingers, but I wasn't get busted walking down his big, fairly open hillside. so I get to the bottom and a figure some. When I got towards a bottle, he must have flew down around seven a m I hadn't heard inferred, give five minutes or so, and so I hooted and he answered, and he had move too far. Maybe this down his read a little bit, because I'm a morning like that they gonna say the tree longer yeah. Possibly May I think he came down around seven is my guess. You know me he could it be on the ground longer and was just skin kept goblin. Now I know that he was by himself. Would you guys agree that bert when it's cold and nasty they stay in the trees. Longer I agree. Sometimes they do for sure rainy nasty days. I think they stay in the tree longer. Just don't want to get yeah sure you guys above hung out west in here? Do you guys get a feeling that the these birds stay in the tree longer and say amalgams? I don't have it,
dense. If I don't know that, I can comment that I don't know, I'm the same way. I think one thing that is different than out west those- and we were talking about this little bit- is dead, always roost in the same areas here and I just because they roosted in that drainage yesterday, they could be. You know quite a ways away and it seems like out west there's it's more common for them to show up in the same places three hour I would say, more common but not like fixed. You know: where are they it's yeah. It feels like more kind of like that. There's like certain spots they like and like year in year out as long as something doesn't happen to that little local population, though kinda like use that's bob when you bump a man is neither gonna they'll if you forced to come back there that night, it's like belle curve, I mean that's generally true, but I've got a farm in northern missouri and there is one area there always I mean now
the five percent of the time. There's gonna be at least two gamblers roosted exactly in that same spot, every night same treat saint yeah, behaviors the evil leaner night. Well, I don't. I don't want them that hard better but day that it It is like a gardener. It's a guaranteed place. Now I don't know that I've ever seen that before other than that one location. So it's it's not common, but if they found the thing that does everything they want in other they'll they'll? They have some level faithfulness to that location guards now, asked where they don't have many choices lot. At times she will find yeah in areas where there's is not a lot right. Rail, Alright, yeah there you are there. I was cross bomb. The is a dry creek ben climbed up it's in yards or so and now I'm a long time, a big guy- that's been oak
maybe another twenty yards ahead- think it may be a nice spot to get to cause. I could just start to see kind of up on this, the the the I just kind of benched out where he was I was thinking. I could just start to peek my nose, up and see on the ridge. If I got to their and I on my way out there. He gobbles ones on his own sweet gray in also that's a good sign, yeah yeah, it's nice when you get a courtesy gobble, so I like to call us when you don't have to asking for it with a hoot our strike, your call I was just like hey over here yeah, I'm with you and as I make it to that tree, and thank you actually hammered again and when I went it when I heard then then was ok, I just sit down like. I don't need to go any farther. This is this, Southern unit have talked about that. There's like a turkey, goes from being real far turkey's gobble ghosts of being kelly
can't really get a grass above it kind of far away in some sort of strict sense, you cross like a thin. You can't like a thin plain and also, he's right on top eu jimmy, like you, Ass into a moment when you are suddenly in his area gobbled just sounds so different, You can be sent out a new gobbler. They went areas like a step and also be like now. No exact areas more insight. they become at some distance. They become, like you hear that you huh you're, more quality to the sound and you otherwise do yeah. It's at one point, it's just kind of like a blur of a gobble sound, and then you get just a little bit closer and also you can hear every little part of that gobble as it kind of breaks you know it's like.
Think it's like an image coming into focus, yell yeah and then all your ear, ears, can triangulate ngo yeah he's over their roughly a hundred yards away? You know, yes, I sat down and my net on and put a diaphragm in, and I gave em baron. virus seven knows pre soft. In a guy, no response, behind my hand, entire, throw my calls or because there is a perfect spy because he had a com two about price. Sixty two even see where I was and then there is a role tween. He and I and then behind me. I had another law load spot. So you can imagine he came over. Look in you didn't see a hen there's spot with him that was called to him could have been right so far without covered in the spot and so you didn't answer so low
and then I took up my volume of a little back in this game. Three three or four louder notes: yeah yeah yeah. He he does John dried over it and numb, and you told me that that their point you could hears feathers yeah. I can hear its feathers shake a little bit as gobbled stuff? You know that point yeah seventy five? Eighty yards, it didn't. Take long, maybe a couple minutes and I could see his head common and he came right to that edge where he was. I could see the whole body at a range in very hung up for a little ways. Both from that range, I could already see abloom way ahead and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've in dollars taught there. When you see a blue, I add he is kind of love and expanded. You know you're the deck is stacked in your favour. At that point, right much better than seen a red, oh yeah, man, and
we hear them these will a for that point. He hadn't seen Indiana hadn't heard him drummer spit, but still, therefore, like a minute or so it seemed my father. it is probably a minute and then to start working towards me and that's when it started, we went into full straw. Did drama spin. It leaves dry I calculated as you spit drum you do. Of course I like that is far from right with those like man area is a sound. We ve talked about this before, but its sound. You have to tell yourself that your hearing it
on top of your sure. You'll get everyone here. Will your ears here and because it has been a number of times you ve heard of drum. I came here german like this. Like it, it's a decimal or somethin, lay out the between women between your age. My heads goes away what fighters thirty sooty grouse. You know that we chased around and I've got dusky in my yard montana, and I can get five tell more like seven or eight feet from this dusk grouse, and I can hear him you can see his yell patches, vibe, eighty as he does this? You can hope, your phone out and record a video and play a bag four volume in the microphone on the phone cannot pick it up to go sound yeah, it's crazy. The film ghosts and what not report similar problems, yeah. So that's what a turkey that the is, because really
Distance, you rarely actually here the spit right you more here the yet you know that in that can work again. I can work the other way to sitting there for hours in going. What did you do I think you're drummond, which ways that is behind me on top of me, it's hot super hard to course yeah. It's just like it's all encompassing one is close. You all around you, it's it's! It's need sound, you more than here sure and what he's doing is taken his wings in like bees his wings on his body and they'll go and beat the wings on the ground and wear off their primaries that the primary the eleven hours there yelling turkey's your, where the ends often be nice straight line,
Yes, I got the show, that's why you know I call it married gobbled, maybe three or four times as he came in and. He now went in and out of straw same thing through. four or five times and it wasn't very long and the whole thing have in five. I kill them at seven fifteen a kind of had a window once it, maybe thirty five yards in at the time. I was like very confident because I'm like yeah, like red blue white head and then as soon as he gets into some stick shit again, I'm behind a tree and like you dumb ass, you dumb ass because it seems like I had seen it before they get behind that tree and you're thinking he's going to just pop out the other side at thirty and in Next thing: pops out ease it sixty again, for whatever reason he decided to go away from you, but anyways this. I worked just how you want any bob's out and he came to twenty yards or so, and
at that moment of certain against a tree where it is blind call in a sinner chair? my teeth against a tree and also about an yeah. He shouted pit, bull yeah cause there's like no other reason I could imagine he would be. Spending has gone up either gonna get shot by the guy down landowner, guy or the pit. Bull attacked him and he had to defend himself from the pitbull. An outcome as they was sort of you know to gaze, and they had is one when you in a dark and sell the fancy. What happens nothin thing in that case you just let him lay, so we we proceeded to wander all around, but we ended up right. There happened. The beer, Oh, we made a plan to me Jani at ten, and we just made a big long, lou headed for that spot because in previous years it's a really good
and we ended up down there and we had to split in time to meet him at ten. When we got up there's a day, it was pretty redeeming when you had that bert. oh, I think our boy like, because not here in any thing, is that it's so windy the kind of guy, on the whole idea that I'm hear a gobbler We were just go to likely areas. Little bottoms require the wind. You get all the wind down, little bottoms hollers hollows. and down just call, give it twenty minutes, because that can work that can work come in silent, alot yeah, you lay down the thing, is you gotta get like real comfortable, because you know well what direction they're going to come from and you can be fidget around you,
it could be, he could be behind. You never make a noise and you fidget around he's going to leave and he never knew he was there. So what? If I'm doing that sort of thing I like to try to get where I'm almost like it? I don't even think it's a bad thing to fall asleep for a minute blind con, because you won't be that comfortable. just call every whatever ten minutes Last year, blind colin, I woke up. I woke up to see a turkey coming. You get that kind of fitful sleep and also- And we got a red had come and do the commons do the brush there and he there like him. I never made a peak oil. So are you have outlined, was counselor so there we blind called. And then really nothing happened, though the end of the day. we went out that night and try to do was called roosten on witches
snow and then, like a turk, gobbling just gets generally throughout the day. It just gets worse like in the world calls per second just drop to, whereby about ten in the morning. Unless is really good does not mean calls six in all kinds called and just gets worse and worse and worse and worse and worse but in some locales you'll have a spike or there's something about them. Going back to the rules. You understand us at all from from in everything over time. the school. About that ensure they need. Us was paid attention towards nay as their going back to their rooms for whatever reason they sometimes were gobble up some more like two often times
I like to gobble once they get up in the roost, know a lot of times, though the church who gobble and of course the hints come to him, like you explained before, and though do their thing look out a hang out and breed and knock around again you know all up in the morning the hands or go off do their own thing in owner stern, look for places to nest or one the feed or whatever, and also times they leave the gaubert. And so, sometimes years. There's a spike or you can get em gobble mid. Then again in the afternoon, when they're, starting to gather back up, hands are kind of back and he's feeling his again. You know you may get a gobble or two and now often times it's a shock, gobble that that happens at night, as opposed to just god when they do some but gotten in trouble shot goddamn. Thank you get more sponsors than them. Just naturally, but on the whole lot, maybe the honey Miriam which, as you know, the people
except the area of sub species of turkey's, but legs like varieties of turkey's right. There's five. Now what was they sought? There's five sub species to turkey's. In the? U s: and the mirrors, the very vocal one we the drive around, sometimes hunting meares. We drive around from spot spot spot on law roads would ever and stop turned a car haunt the horn to find out where you're hunt the morning, but we did we, haven't heard no one and our group has heard a turkey gobble past. I think nine fifteen a m on this trip. goin out two nights in a row. Spread an all out across the ridges blown protocols, cairo, Europe's screech owls, what the
Bored I bought out now peep crickets, not even here I try cricket call, but yeah you mean like cricket for your sign. That's all we heard the rockets So then, all of we wake up the next morning and you new, there's gonna be goblin near because the weather switched we're brush our teeth in the driveway and her own goblin, the distance with no wind. Are you who allowed called I'll call them that are made yeah you're right at the heart of the porch, your cabin! Would you call this thing: driftwood acres but may be called a cabin here we go into my blank. I told my wife to cabin got a little big for cabin status, so so you're going to any go here. The cabin We say our shack now. Can I wasted does that a cabin There is a call to share
yeah yeah yeah at his electric toothbrush go and where to turn that off and then we can cause it was like you said. I thought I heard one turn brush off that it again you to russia's impeding the ability. Listened gobbles was that's the only could I have ever heard against ledger toothbrushes epithets button, so the back up we made up of the island and we tried all these different spots and Ivan turkey. on the gravel bar. I know you guys are thing there's no way. Oh there's that day we cut their track, the highlight of our day close out our day on a track. Do we just like. Oh here's, a track, that's right and we descend called the track. I'm and took a pitcher of the track, so would have some semblance of a joke.
we from the day but yeah from the driveway and hewed out, and it went and parker and I deployed, and there ended up being four gobblers pry three gobblers and jake and parker called one across the river talking about that ferment I think, with turkey on dear either a hero or zeros like you're, never there's no like mid grade turkey, guys you know so like well, I saw I could have shot a couple of gobblers, but he was nice, as I had a great experience where, like you, try as hard, you can every time or I do welcome turkey on. So we got on the circling error. Goblin goblin cross hundreds yards away right, always I've done autumn and we got. I don't know across the room. For we're just on the other side of the river from him yeah they were on their up on a bluff and words.
on the gravel bar, but they're, not hundreds yards, where a couple hundred others. The other side of the river above us what worst case scenario. If you think about turkey, you wanna get You know same level or above them, preferably the same side of the river those types of things, so everything working against us. I think we're do so happy to hear turkey's goblin that dead matter. You know we're right after him, so yeah they got fired up in there in the roost and we we called out a bit in got one sure enough far, you know thought he wanted to play ball, and you know we kind of Brandon and I kind of shut up quick call him. Then all of a sudden man things things across the.
The river and land from out of the room, three left as bodies behind arms. Yet on illegal and gravel budget I am sailor. Radice man, it was beautiful. Yangtse is big beard. I sit here, carbon, yes at the hearing caused airline company and where you can take a pasture hunt geese. Yes, so he sailed in her brain and landed on the gravel bar on the ground. We think that, like either there's some wrong with him through the most masterful beautiful bitter calling. So what was wrong with turkey? Try them It's like I just don't think of him be like I'm gonna fly out of this tree cross the river land on some rock, and he did many is bright, landed, eighty two hundred yards down from us worked right off. There's a lot of little. grub brush down there, we're tucked into some small cedars nerves, another one about
when he yards away and he just took up shop right there on the other side of that cedar, so I have been a how far thirty yards, no more than thirty out, say. Twenty and he's just drumming in dry in gatlin it's going on for a while, it's going on for twenty minutes yeah all of a sudden. It's like it. Just there was nonstop action for twenty minutes and then it stop the whole time, I'm brandon, and I were the when the turkey sailed across the river. I said, turn a face of turnover so we were set apart from each other, so we're the way we're sitting is trees were kind of facing each other right and so the turkeys behind me at this point just I'm a hot goblin, all my own I got
well, I'm looking at Brandon and I'm just like shoot them. And you know what are we doing here but yeah? It was right behind the bush, but I never saw him that whole time never even caught a glimpse of them that whole time yeah so exciting Certainly go goes in here, added to this field, which is private property that we can't hunt on so he's got be in the low water on the gravel barn and are in the high water area of the gravel bar. So he gets into this field and then he starts goblin again and man. It was beautiful, its full strut, everytime gobbles. You can see his brow come on out there tonight detail me man. It was beautiful thousand painter, dowered painted
turkey gobbling with it's breath coming out as steam or whatever. It is at that point, he's probably sixty yards away and ten yards onto private, and I'm thinking he's just going to split across that field. But there's one lane that runs back down. It's like whoever that landowner is it's there like lane to get down to the river, but it's cutting on the public land. Then, when he got to that lane, Give it to him and parker hit him and he turned and came. He went down. The swale will recall a little more the call and he turns and came back and now is back in the game. Go down the swale and I'm afraid that I didn't see him cut through the woods the first time. So I'm thinking he must have cut through that swale and now he's going to take that same route back to the gravel bar and end up behind that bush again. But this time he made a fatal mistake of going up on top of the lip of that soil and that was
end of bout vouch. For my perspective, like is that we are facing each other right, and so I kids, I was watching the hut through the perspective of watching brand in him, in turkey and out, and I can see him looking alluring slight movements. I was hidden in his eyes and when the closely and back again he's goin he's gone is coming to come and I seem is his breath starts getting fat. Syria in the excitement of the turkey when he realizes is common and he disappears, behind the swale like is it in you see mild panic said into they re just like. Oh no, oh, no, I see him now and soon as it comes up out of the soil, is talking about with that white hair I see, is his eyes get big and then in a chicken on the stock analyses it when you
when you, when you hold because you're scope, which I've never done I'll, just shoot, elevated a bead. No tell you call it the convicted rib valise, the libyan barrel right proviso. tempted with them messing around various apparatus. I even have the I don't I don't take long shots soundings have never of never wished a shot at one what are you even that, where you hold nano right at the base of his neck there's across her in Erin, I hold her out on the base of his neck and you know I I was on a media hunt in south dakota and one of the sponsors had those scopes and I'd had that gun for many years and You know how to put it on their to appease the people pay for the trip. I've never taken it, often seven or eight years it just works. For me, I've got one of those red dots on my daughter's turkey gun,
she likes it, but I mean when I shot that bird. I panic first second cause. I didn't see anything and one when I finally realised it just in everyone flogged and just one Down dead you normally when you she won the day, shop around and make a bunch of ruckus. I couldn't see it, I mean it was just where to go, and then I look and there it laid kind of on the backside of the base of the neck like, were you saying its feathers start or lower than that, because you, I would like the head in the neck joint fits. just below the skull. Your prize silence impels over the top of his head. Depending on how far away you're the base of the neck about where the feathers start. That's, why put the crosshairs- and I know, I got a real tight jochen at thirty yards about the size of a skill it in own. If I Put it there, I'm not going to miss I'm, probably not going to put too many low and seems to work
in the far aim a little higher discuss a drop but kind of hot in our man, I'm who I hold like I say that like do miss turkeys are shooting over the top of him, cause her aim for the head yeah and they got a tight pattern. It just those people feel that you were low. He be dead because you did around the neck or release would fluffed him by size. I kind of whole down little ways, a member like some some turkey guy saying that the holds on the waddles was low on the neck, Finances are kind of doing that kind of in the waddles and where the bases now that's not the same thing done at the word. Other start further, you the kind of hanging The camera hanging like a beer belly whereby you young over that weighs line of his feathers, yeah well now that I was telling you for a new bead on my gun and beat
but taller than they beat. I had on there and so I understand how that works in aiming it causes you to put the the higher b cause you too, if you bring a be down, because you shoot a little bit lower and so, but yeah I'll just aim halfway in his waters in his head, but at me at thirty yards. I don't know that if I'm really getting their precise with the one make sure of is that I can see his head over my site. I don't ever. rub his head doing. I'm not thinking about how, when I'm trying to do shot placement shooting like big game, am I'm not like doing that level, but I am thinking when I have the I am thinking, don't shoot over his head, especially get nervous about when they're super close, because then you got a pattern. Size of baseball, it's gotta be on, yeah rose is going to run off and I don't not what you're out. Therefore, but meanwhile this whole gravel bar fly now.
mark miracle. Turkey thing is going out. If we go back up and I know how you say you: do I go down flirt with his private property boundary we get back. except burnett are sure enough. Gabba, Gabba, Gabba, the bird goblin down that zone We do want do that. Then we fail he's, got a pitcher His ruse when, on the other side of the painted trees he's gonna, sit there right, worrisome, they're, not very confident in our miracle calling abilities if whether we call them across the line that kind of stuff man I hate that kind of stuff. We usually never mind that turkey begrudgingly yeah continued on down the ridge. your honor ridge here, another turkey and kind like stay a little bit like may be, but he's very far off words like hard, even begin, think about how you gonna go about it
we call yeah, maybe then go little ways in look down into this cow and then we're like that's our turkey. the several of, but one of them is like that's the turkey. So we start nose and down into the holler the cultural appropriation for me to say: holler works yeah, so it's not horrible. No okay and I'd like to be sensitive to that kind of stuff cause. I could switch the hollow no holler guy good. we've, been coffee, creek beds or a draw and work our way down. I'm going to go back to work our way down towards the creek bed and free, soon. We get where we enter into that. We cross that plane where all of a sudden. You like in a zone, and we did so
I'm thinking damn it. We've got two cloves you get set up and call and call up a hen who comes up just basically bitching at us. They were mad seamen, they does Why the money you guys can enlighten me, but, yes, it is comes in there. I thought it was like like a happy part, but now I'm thinking this is she's just clucking, but I guess it's just clock in and look in china make that can actually guy thing they do they gotta thing they do were varies like when you call a gobbler like he's kind of common at Oh, come up in canada, but these have circles around you far out, like shit, you know if they don't, they don't come barreling in their very like. What's going on, what's going on, they tend to like Barry vocal. We had the same thing this morning. Yep How can we ever saw the whole by that and she
to where she could look up. Yonder are the best that we had set up on the bench ridge and looked at look, look, look, look, walk back law, but we could see her head and neck and then she would just went back over the this need swale little bare and shut up and started. We went to the point she she's all pissed and goes in side of the hill I spent ideal shoot bearded be useful suit males, but they were they define. It is a bearded turkey because they have a weird beard feathers. other just she goes off, we can forget about it in a while later we realise that the goblet we are called on to a drifted off in the other direction, as they want to do, and we stand to go chase them and she's takes our flying from that same spot. So she was all pissed. We're back. site and then this decided the mellow out, hang out chase. Is say, god were cut it, so
Bottom jason said set up, and then you hear off to the right. We here, a hand call today him. off to the left. I hear owl hooting the day now late in the morning that other people are getting older. People are growing aware of our holler I like people like there's a holler that has a lot of goblin, emanate from it and people are zeer other, do or zero this like public land hunting than other dudes zeroing. In on this thing, Your attitude is beyond a used car doors and he thinks that those guys left he fell do that our love took off, but the right as we work in this turkey can hear this guy and the right yeah yeah, yeah yeah. Like common down in the cold, We get to the gobbler post roost, we get clause
on the bottom looks beautiful put out de coy. He hammers, like private clauses, gobble we got very excited. The name He gobbles again, these same spot checks more excited. Then he got Once again, it is good that sinking feeling words psych off unmistakably he's farther away now, which is like use. You have the third year running. You garbled again is like Hammett those farther away for sure and n bout yeah there are very far away. You know, I think I heard the turkey flop there was that close you about jumped out of my skin and that dude coming on from the right does out turkey homeless on this wasn't his first trip,
our there he might yeah he might have been in there. Knowing that those turkey's light to leave their goal of that branch or whatever yeah and then we want at all or wholly home increases one o clock and we came home. So meanwhile, we need a tour parker and I regroup after bringing my bird back to the cabin, and we hear one goblin in the same holler or Jani, killed his bird. Then we go up to the we go up to the meeting spotter, the caller location, and we thought you guys employed down after that burn use. That term deployed. We stay. out of their like wandered over made his way over here on a mission. So we too way down into their devoid of details. the boy. What a difference a day makes all my spot redeem them. So
was there all the ridges, I said, would have birds on them. Had birds on on the hill, all the hollers had birds even killed one off the gravel bar, so it's unbelievable they turned on overnight because like in their learning to breed and Like an understanding always cycles in the natural world like fish spawning and all that, like a photo dubious, oh period window. There's a length of day that is appropriate in that window depends What thing we're talking about, what natural phenomena we're talkin about that photo period when all that length of day window could be wider, skinny in that, as all the other all the variables kind turned on and turned off, riley think like steel, The spawn it's gonna ham
never have as before his day, never happens later in the day, but within that window of time is myriad things and I do occur water level, water temperature, all this kind of stuff, and it's going to happen during the pick. Their moments is like funny with these turkeys that on Monday seas Well, except ever jani the disease of either not doing that today, the next that slight change warmer no air in there just back to it, and I think yesterday was better than today, even though the conditions today were almost the same as yesterday, it was like they were just shocked into getting going, and today they settled back down a little bit. They gobbled early. they stopped earlier today too. So then yesterday did you guess, work more birds. We definitely went for a long walk. We we had several minor setbacks yesterday, to say the least out no forever worked a bird we choose
used a couple others. I don't know that I don't ever we ever worked another year I defined work. can a bird where you're in the game We never got back in again now an amazing thing. Amazing thing that happened yesterday, those we jump to cover a quail on the public land way in the back, and it doesn't have a doesn't happen not in the old days. In the old days, atwood people did down I mean we have so much work going on quail restoration button is part of the country is spent. I had no idea. This is the coil country. It's really now and then Historically, it was here when you more small farms or what I really don't know what the change has been over. I mean I think he could be really rare if you figured out what the problem is, I walk around out there last thing on my mind, would be the dow jumped twelve. I jumped equality. Myth realized that was a coil could be so I'm not expecting it to happen. Really surprised we were deepened It was on a power line or we jump. This was a brush theirs.
It looked like the right swap through if we were fifty or sixty miles north of here, but it was cool, really cool for sure how many coil were in the copy. What do you think parker ten? He attended twelve years, nozzle covey. Let me tell you coil yeah required. The last few quail spitten many many years ago, fourteen or fifteen years go my girlfriend at the time was friends with someone who was a private chef on a yacht, and this friend says to my girlfriend. Time: haiti. Do you? A beggar quail, cleaned up quail. and she's a sure she was Who gave me this quail george h, w bush
The owner of the yacht as friends of george w bush and he came out on the yacht and brought a sack of quail. The he had shot father was pretty interesting. So I save them for a long time. I think I'd save him for some kind of special occasion when I did boss them out. Not one of these quill had not a pellet in any of these quail. I shall now here's a summons whether someone is only at these highfalutin coil places. The raised them and pins anyway and its when you go to these highfalutin quail shootin facilities, shoot quail. but then there all shot up and dogs dog's been chewing who wants see, eat that right? The thinking goes, So when you leave, they just go into the pen and get you. fifteen nice new ones that arm molested by shot and that's what you mean,
well that I have no. I never backed up or verified any of this, but this is just what was told to me. Do you know who read? Scott is the bass master? No member one bass, fish internally started, you know who race got from ah word from our michigan Kevin vandams. Next item is parker, you gotta know who ray scott ida. The bassmaster will states seattle, alabama, no yeah, he started and he basically started professional bass, fishing tournaments, but okay, I went down and stayed with him one time and I got to my room and it had a plaque on the bed. That said, president george hw bush slept here, though right. So that's my george bush. He don't eat bass lot of those, I don't think so. We had a body is a ass, the recreational colleague amateur term basque I caught knows how many barriers in his life now talk anew
then his whole life he'd never eat. We serve him. His first bass ever a tournament. Fishermen his first best ever you liked, it did not want his wife too. Find out about it because she be one What the world he'd been out there doing. All this time if she knew that a small sandwich tasted we have to call bass out of our pawn. If you don't take so many little ones out. The big they get stunted don't gross. The pawns only support so many ounces of fish, and it's going to take the form of larger big suite. We allow large mouth bass so back to turkey on that's my story. h, w bush, some dang a work up and I'd like to work up a real good punchline for it, which might take some time
but you guys wrapper up. One o clock done deal this morning step on the porch. Presumably the eagle was not brushing because government we're gonna go we're going up a global, the attic jones on the port unimportant. So I put him to work on the porch this morning and I was hoping that those other three would be back and at least two of them were, and he got him fired up from the fortune. This parker and I got on the right side of the river and I let him take it from there. on the right side of the river slipped in there still on the roost. Right as in right, verses, wrong, now, left and right now he's got it right both ways he means right proper, but he was on river right, both gotta, yellow, just quickening for listeners, river, when you say river right: river left it from the poorest active of someone looking down stream, so you can be facing upstream Amy. say, river right. It's on your left, correct, like your floating down the street yeah yeah,
you're right the correct side, which happened to be that used to be part of my safety speech every day when you efficient and so that the proper side of the river, which happened to be river right, correct. We slept up another over of darkness. selected. Two trees tried to get a tree. Wider them than my break up, my think about I about I do. I do think about that a lot and also fellows Our time find the tree I read well under redwoods, we found on the day I found one brandons argued that later it is a little low skinnier than we liked it. He blames me. I blame him for this. What happened? I blame the turkish at any rate, there goblin goblin, nice and in other they're gone and so much that I'm trying to pick em out of the tree work where within a hundred yards, I think
you know, I'm lookin look and I can hear him is goblin. Goblin goblin goblin in we'll call, and just a little bit back to him, some soft yeltsin, hey right. We we put the call down and in order to stand off, you know, he's wanna gobble and I'm not saying anything, when I see him pitch out many pages out to me. It's the same thing again yeah right to us right so same thing, you're talkin, about yesterday, too little will swells right. So he pitches behind these. swells over, which is maybe maybe seventy. just over the top done deal, I'm thinkin about come back get so, Mr Steve's coffee the turkey comes in kind of follows this finger down right. I can just see glimpses and pieces of him. He turns around the swell, let's say wolf. If he gets around that then comes starts breaking towards me. It's over. I got him he's committed. He did that he broke around, took about ten steps and at this point is maybe six fifty five or six The yards common honoured on a string turned sideways. I see is headed yards. May I checked by that big tree nodded He saw Brandon back they're moving around I'm telling you I was almost asleep move now moving around. So that was it. That was for me today and then I m on lower holy water all over oil. You in a wind picked up today, which was a little more from

Fifty are you know who you are turkey? This darkness the end of your site. It's over it's over. We got out the turkey in the ones bows not there in the province border land border. Turkey was not there when down to the to the roman, the hourglass Roman ridge descended the roman ridge. And we don't. You picked up a global by this point. Now we are of the same quite a ways until finally, I don't think we shocked him. We're
We're gonna walk just maybe starved, and all we heard a on double gobble, bird governs gone over to talk to each other. So what start as goblin before you can finish. This guy was bodies gobble overcome which school every likes. About a double gobble, which is different. Double guy was a turkey that goes gub gub gub gub gub gub. but these guys were goblin over when you're a doctor, its farm on a good day, you'll get the whole ridge were it's like someone running their fingers down the piano the whole damn ridge, a bird on one individual gobble and adjust the guy. was, is travel down. The ridge go to That's fine we were in that kind situation and set up an right away. Repeat me: ass, they call up ahead, cannot make an

When we heard a noise, they wanna Kiki the king, Is it like a a louder, longer yeah kind of noise? It's like a hurt or hurting noise they'll make to their poults yeah, so she clocked caught purred Who would have thought that we would wish
I think he's. Writing. Is it's all in that same content, you can tell in part about it using our part about it. There I, like there's a theirs there's the way turkey's sound, sometimes oftentimes times. You here, you'll see a real turkey. With a sequence of notes over period of time that no turkey cause- I hang out with replicates if sit down the woods with a guy What is made hands, as you did in her all six minutes? He sat there. Just making a racket lake. just piling noise upon noise, nonstop of it afterwards like hit him on the shoulder here's a real live turkey just go into town,
now it is going to town she just travel through the woods to walk in You call cutting like a big art. just raising wholly hell and then long after those hands. We can see in the bottom. raise in hell I think if you want to really soundly turkey's you get six seven guys just to go, sit out the words and start just doing crazy stuff with turkey. Gulls this kind of resolving down there I mean, but the differences they're doing all that it makes sense to them. If you said I make it like sequences of strange, sounds lord What message you're sending out that as part of being like a little bit. Judicious is because their feeling some thing that might not match up of what you're laying down lutheran com a little fight right around
in I just mean that makes sense to them that doing it on the weather doing it. But then try to work away down spook a couple. Turkey's here's, a weird thing, I think yahoo nor were they aren't, I think, they're farther away and were arguing about design and off events event It proves a jani was cracked, because here they jump they spoken fly off, which is a bad sign. It's a real bedside. We thought it was the end of our morning and I do kind of like a very have like three scoops of ice cream and all three of them has fallen off your cone. The kind of a physical expression of star like it was like the you're, a little paler than you were like that you're, like that, The market will work in
when I had my blue to read, so it was just da right if what I reasoned yarly does does like a czech leo do, we do it I'll call it all the time, because the especially the boy or might just been over the ridge, spook half of his cows heaters? Here's who's running? it's awesome. You go yeah give him the super sexy like thrash around like someone else is chasing one of his cows and that som bitch yeah then he's just like common to see what all the fuss is about, because there's a thing in animals. Man is like some animals hold more. Some animals in a group people pay attention. two in some animals intergroup people don't pay attention to could have be the you like put the move on somethin in water bargia gardener,
then you lost the ottomans, don't pay any attention to that. One he's has proven its value. oh all, the ones whose nailed it gets nervous and everyone gets nervous like when that amateur nurse I work. Is they did his thing with a I can't remember, verb as her monkey vervet monkeys. What is it vervet monkeys, I'm not sure how she could remember the name of this moment. They wouldn't lose. These researchers went into this group of monkeys and made an audio recording of one of the monkeys in a troop they made it recording of his warning call and started, playing off his work started playing, is meaning called the true ball time and he lost the street grid, They made it that when he made his le gyp morning when he met when he did do is legit warning. I was like what I've never cry. Wolf, he cries, wolf lost credit. So can we?
so my death, whenever it is galileo's and yelps again and covered outward apple dear right from the same hop on top of a thought. They were agitated in energy and we hit the dirt. and I thought it was all over. His theory comes kind like the blue redhead They are not instruct non struggle in a hen, striding their hands so close to her heads are over his tail He comes around this open hillside and is not we're things, I think, might happen. My gases, He gets where he can see and looks on this very open hillside and he said to himself. I don't care what I'm here and there's not a hen. That's you mug lane in the dirt hands dismantling saws fry not I think he looked and he's like get to be this old by which is too,
for months, probably due to its readers by doing this, but here's the deal. screw me out of that turkey, because. There was a yelp from a diet. Graham call the guard the gobble and got in common, and he gets there. Any gifts out of you, Yanina wash them gets where you can see the hill started getting bored. And turned around. Is he not call? Why is he not call can see that he thought third uses common and it was all over like why call now and mess up. You know everything's already set in motion like why do anything because I have had experience is not many above had experiences where its direct line site with turkey, and I didn't have the control to not call anymore. I may maybe warned him gobble again or whatever, and I call that turkey stopped and was like. I can see
exactly the blade of grass that that call came from- and I do not see in almaty now so if I may contact- and I see him common shutting down because why mess? Why most good thing? Why I draw extra attention unless you're like a ventriloquist, I believe that by the way, this tree right here by this shot gun So he drifts off in a king because, as a part of that have failed, up to the left is not our I can't really really do ya That's all it's like your work in a bird but you are also aware of like the coming trouble, because this birds so you know there's somebody can hear this bird goblin. He bride thinks that he does discovered whatever, nor Please walk in and on friday, ghana world but
pretty soon the whew switches, the YAP, YAP Yap and he's as common hard man? It's like this guy's jogging that jog and then we never see him. He does here Mcgee's running down into this He started to move on and it's behind him and for a minute we feel like hey man. We found this we've been here since forget, light out or been here since daybreak, not your hauler, yeah, he's movement along in the turkey is now moving he's moving behind em than we think in a game of maybe get out ahead of him, but then we're just like race and over turkey's in there. the term he's went to his side of our own we went wandering around found of turkey tracks garlic were turkey had thus a little bit or some such Stamped up and winged up an area found little pig track on a bigger pig track, one around a bunch more a snack,
made a whole bunch of really loud. Locating type calls open, in theory, starfleet's, I've myself. Come down the mayo, it's getting late in the day as us having sympathy come down our political work in start work on our way up. Oh found a crawler torn up pieces and threw it in the river to watch creek jobs, feed on it, get down new creek and janius amir both come like man, look good down here in the main the luscious place, we have been the last three domains them creek near sunlight, very lush, and we start work in a way along headed catlike, don diego with noon the adequate at one with a long walk? also they look like
here- is a better down turkey. Now about ten or twelve feet away in a blow down when a hen a couple things when a hands, like you know, nesting- and she asked you when she gets over eggs there she's going to incubate them. I throw my shot gun. And I'm a man down the shock at the thing on the ground in the annexes hen boy, I I've also turkey's lay down to hide- and you seen this part officer on the one time I saw we're coming down a canyon in new mexico and come around a corner in cardiff the automobile field and the turkey laid down flat on the ground and stretches neck out and is laid down
and they got nervous unbroke year. We he, I think he thought he had been just slick enough and he had disappeared You know behind their eyes and cause. We I mean we are in a tight little candidate kang and it had just you know, broken up and I'm usually the first time you could look left and look down. Winning all you see that turkey in descending you'd seen lanes I'll remember seconds before that, we found our amount learn killed a turkey here, so he bit He does lay down to hide, that's the one I didn't know I didn't know. That was the thing that could happen until that day. So I, my shock and up. yeah. He says it's a head as its some, like, check and making sure is not a jail yeah. Why jake? I don't know I don't like it. Jake is young. Is we know it's an honor? Maybe here think it's a good idea to lay down. And also it jumps up, and it's a cripple. Turkey, a crippled
were a cripple, long beer who two is trying to take five, but he can't take flight so bound them too little effect. He went off. Do I tore off after running short, sharp, my shot gun, pull the children often happen did a regular for long stroke on my shot gun. Ran more of tomorrow, the woods job and get up and here that he had been injured, is wing was suffered injury and we didn't you say: NI crab, Syria may crops, we didn t graziano to no avail shattered the main joint in his wing is shattered, like he got hit by a twenty two. He got hit by a truck. What did you make of the leg later, and I want to ask you this, though his back leg was,
All bruised. Was he runnin full steam, or was he jumped up that so that? What are you trying to take flight? So he didn't, run off like entirely normal turn rude wrong. He was trying to take flight. Beaten his wings to no effect yeah, so that you'd, like. all this energy trying to get airborne. He was run with his wings talked. She couldn't tell about the leg at that point. Now it was a real man was not like a graceful departure on his part. Plus I mean you shot on him in him within seconds of him, getting go and so in its new york hunter one. It's my last day, so one sort of like this idea that a lot of guys they like a mortally wounded, animal they're, gonna kill it anyway, which I've done, but I'm fagin. Here's my turkey as well
and he's obviously messed up. So We go there, but he's not emaciated in the wound. Wasn't an old wounds, those new he, I don't know he got shot by another turkey hunter. That's the most plausible explanation. By an old man that windows off broken up, who knows anything happened, anything there's an infinite number of things that right now, but now is mine. Now there is going to seattle, head to the friar Anderson, insulin, I took them in a pan, so I got two turkey breast filets in one leg, coming home late. Good deal, though you now at first, I didn't feel like I gotta turkey, but
the details in life like details get hazy. I now feel it go. There's gotta turkey that back yeah when I get home to survey here, how's missouri and gilberto E, oh yeah, already like at first as we pull up until you get while my well, not really. You know it's kind of an asterisk next to this one, but the like does three hours later there, the island, I checked Missouri missouri off the list in case you're wondering I still feel like I didn't get one either. That much is clear is that you did not get that if you'd asked me on Monday at about ten o'clock, if we were going to go three for four, already a all put together peering about hedge guys, the missouri us like far brow the weather. Well yeah during every you, ve. Never seen such horrible weather.
As you say that all before I said no reading guinea, but now. And it'd be like how that that birdie goddamn missouri. How far was that shot I'll be like? Oh close? The call them is yours those clothes he caught a turn. You gotta turned for I was enrolled in spain. Now you do like came in silent, never peep out of it. yeah. I got a turkey Absolutely no doubt my mind about that. hey, listen have. Did we not been just wander in the woods until one pm that were to happen so that the hard work that paid this keep Do the woods if you just walking around like look for nightcrawlers yeah key walkin in the woods. No, he came home and head on came here and now Steve. You lay out the many here is what we have lunch, where we had some
edison chile and some brandons we're gonna catfish was asked was flattered, but it was dominated by mark flash polar right. Dude name, flash power outfits a lot more, an artificial, he's a I'd shortened to flash poll. Waterfall biologist, really flag cats, man it'll good, but I love him so much, but we like grown up we'd get big fly had we do not to the fat off its causes of taste, bad yeah, catfish, fat luck why is that? When a man is, but it's not it's horrible near? We may mistake. When was the last fall? Maybe we're doing some cooking for television, no good word. Shootin recipes for the cooper.
So when we had that, I thought we had fish when we were making sure we didn't have any. We were doing a fried cabbage soup. We had to buy pizza and bought a big slab of catfish and we're. You know nobody even thought twice to get your think about trimming it more. Obviously, He's been trimmed fine, galileo's nasty, ass, the nursing, the fat, that's what I like the little chance. we catch, does little to mean I mean the little channels don't get the fat on. You call fiddlers. I know people do. call them fillers, but no, we call them little. Dingers become fiddlers around here, yeah and a whole fries and pillars the skin them back. We fly three months we are not all feathers, I don't know gather movies
Does the fiddle with rebate and the good to get in here that might be it, but yeah you can just pull back the skin and Anne frank. You take that often for imo. We flayed the anchors because put monseigneur, which is poor boys pickles that's good? Oh you type role, beggar, whatever friar gathers make up like like a like of you, know: tartar types then he put red hot item. Pickles item word asylum. As you know, the casino desires phoebean florida with grouper, but we must make em with kind of summer different bonn, but the flowers, good man. And the chili was like real: he wasn't like midwest mom chili. It was from scratch, it's it. I love that stuff cause. I love mid was mom sure you know what I'm tamara. I don't. I dunno you take like ground up. Me and put- can tomato products in air and then he put pin
beans and air. I like it. I like them, the venison cut more chunky than than ground. And using real chile's instead a chilly powder and adobe, oh yeah, to publish it a double runner and I love it. I may have to have another bowl before I leave yeah. I liked the fried like fried catfish man fried any kind of fish cause my upbringing but the south years. Well as he him cause, he gets kind of snow. You said it's not the south. Now this isn't the south. This is a I thought, as the midwest, and you guys say this- isn't the midwest from we're at where I'm from like its little south, its technically the mid west. There's twelve needs in the mid west Missouri, the south west corn, the midwife I will say, the Missouri is in the university Missouri noun Assisi, the south eastern.
or when I'm running around in the howard, let's say yeah town when I'm down in the holler. I have a hard time believing that I'm in the midwest it's a good argument, especially targeted. Thus down the holler partner when south the mother to the frigid cold north. As I have said about turkey on. action packed, and I liked the way you set it up with the shitty first day that was going to remark on that man? That's what you know: Can I ll come back on it. Yes, just wait out if you not the other way that have been horrible. I did my best to have us. Dream and good first aid and have a shitty last day would be a bummer tumble evil. What what a difference and made, though overnight just one day difference it was,
There was the way turkey hunting is supposed to be actually thought. Maybe I'll, find a mushroom in this time of year were supposed to be waken up with a sweatshirt on ending the day was short sandals ongoing out: mushroom hunting, Robbie vision in other than trifecta. The Missouri spring is the wild turkey, the wild mushroom in crappy falise and none of those had been happened until yesterday know. If you come back a week from now, you won't even recognize the place. It'll be all leaved out. It started to change yeah in the last two days to leave start button. Things are popping up out of the ground. Yanis friend was saying how this time you can sit in the woods almost watch the leaves grow. I like that happened on the last two days and guys, I'm glad you got to see a little bit of the redbirds at such a beautiful tree and and they grow here in these in these hills and mountains, and I know it's hard
for you guys, look at these and call them mountains, but no, no, I'm with you yeah. So the red buds were starting to pop a little bit but, like Steve, said a week from now when those those white dogwoods are in bloom and they're mixed in with those red birds which are really more of a purple, color and turkeys are goblin, crappies are biting, the mushrooms are popping just the best. This good righty trees, your man, it really is. We got like the this disease. What's a native shortly pine lot oak hackberry While the hickory hickory sasa, I noticed a bunch of sassafras trees a day back at the turn of the century. The largest saw mill, not this new century, but early nineteen It's the largest saw mill in the world was only you know, a couple of counties over from here for hardwood yeah for hard
We were caught, Mozart, eddie, ozark, sort, pretty much logged bear twice before protection started, and now we have incredible. Canopy hinders much more management of the forced prob. proper tree harvest, rather than just taking it all in one fell swoop right, I think originally, the short leaf pine was more dominant than the oaks, but the oaks came back after the really just allow those shortly fines when I'm looking to set up a must rise, it go ahead of those pines were set up to two thousand year. Like marker, you know, I've got a little stand of em. It's my favorite place on the property Yeah we were wandering the ozarks zero place in the ozarks, where the relief becomes more severe than what we see here. Yeah yeah, I mean the ozarks stretch down into arkansas over into a little portion of oklahoma, and I would say, the most dramatic kind of mountain scape is down in arkansas,
the watch, tos and but you don't get taller or deceiver. I can't really speak to the elevation, I'm not sure, but just the vastness of the entire range, the tallest, the tallest point in Missouri those a little ways north of here so they're kind of scattered out. What is the highest point, Missouri, throw by johnson shut into it's tom Sauk mountain tom Sauk mountain is a part of the big country yeah. I dunno how it is yeah, I'm easy to find out. Brain firefox closes concludes just never give up on the model of never give up on the morrow. Never give up too could always be a crippled. Uptown.
If there are still a dried up, you will never see that again in your life now a really well, it was a. It was a great time glad you guys came down and I'm glad that turkey hunt worked out the way it did. It was tough the first day and we redeemed ourselves all worked out in steve. Is it good brandon the just. It was kind of strange being in turkey camp and not hunt. I've never done it before, but I was saving up for going up to my farm, weekend and I was just fine to be with you guys and copying area of a place. You like the hot right were you to kill a turkey here. He couldn't hot you're Faye replaced the hunt right now I have always said: well, we don't have to go out and you already got a burden on a shilling really wants to go upside down, when I get into that situation, so sweet as could wild game. Wild game, and I know right what tree my turkey's gonna be answer
Although he embarrassed me last year, I'm going to get even this year. Good younes final, we appreciate the cooking is good. You're makes my leg I hear that, but I don't like when we a butterfly. I think we're talking about two different things. We would say that to butterfly like, for instance, to butterfly a pike, flay will be to take that flay
in every three aids of an inch cut through, but not all the way through. That's what I do. Gotta cut about us, but Three in section of the line, nobody but yours that your cotton they, like others in europe. I'm not saying either. Mrs right or wrong. Our use. That term would be the dome to not cut the way through something, that's exactly what I did. They they folded out and there is. Also, you didn't do that yeah yeah! Really. Yes, so I guess that's what you But how really a dear loins? Oh, I know, but I thought it was like an alcohol and when I looked at it really that's what you did. You did butterfly butterfly you're using it the same way absolute. I didn't catch that you sure, got a like a uniform lookin product out of it? Well, I take pride. My work, Congratulations, thank you but
so you take him and put him in a place like what everyone knows. That word means that's right. So I'll sought open it up. a pepper and garlic powder and put it in a plastic bag. It meets health it about I'm an essay engine into quarter, usually try to between be between an inch, each the core, That's the file me. The final opened up pisa me. Internet work normally outdo a two and a half to three inch section and then up. You know the one, seem in the middle way cut almost all the way through a butterfly folded folded up and make it look pretty. No idea! That's what I was eating, absolutely Then I put it in the water I mean you can take a long time explaining what savita is, but basically they just put it in the water in a bag and put the little immersion circulator on, and I set it at one hundred and twenty nine degrees for two hours and take it out and then finish there with a weed burning. I did finish it. Whether with burning torture prefer a whole shows that a good state man
I tried going, rs reverse cause, I hear guys towards them or seeing them first now and then putting them in it's all soggy yeah yeah, I don't. I I have heard like if I'm doing a brisket, I will smoke the brisket first for three hours and then I'll finish it in the seaweed. I know you're messing this up, though worse is the seer africa's in normal cooking, oh yeah! Sorry, I did do reverse No one's get somewhere out this wrong. I have heard what you're talkin about ninety slovenia, The first series, like a reverse, soon requires the commons sui preparation, I think, is to be no in the law, first and then seer sure at the ends of the good. yeah, but does not very smart, very smart way to do. It just gets resolved that a word. It just gets soggy all over again yeah. I think, but where people I think, the the the the the benefit is that
flavour to you, get from the searing he's been in there in the bag, thirty stakes out on the fraud deck here were from which he roots of our roots, of turkey's fired up. We thought we'd burning torch, which ranchers and west taxes will use to burn thorns offer the characters. So the cattle can eat him. One is a drought and here. The stakes beautifully: does good stake man This is why the elder from a holler from we don't have hollers northern Missouri was closed. I went up the mid west you the mid west areas, yet some big corn fed dear up there. that it has finally closing thought, too much. So I say things bran again for avenues. My pleasure in his place, good,
vacuuming up all them invasive beetles forest parkers gotta get work on those we gotta figure out how to get rid of these asian be raises. Did your turf man, Do you have any final things you like to add? Now, thanks guys is, is a good time and Brandon for having us down, and you know I did come up turkey but you know we heard a lot of birds and in the last two days, good time, man, finally back out in the woods breakdown museum on us, I have for turkey, sure now have not harvested turkey. So the pressures building yet more time now I have a little time- may also hopefully, will get. After all My final thought is the way of hunting on public land. in the east, which you hear from all manner guys by how horrible publicly in hunting is in these I would have agreed with a at eleven fifty nine today.
yeah, because you realize that asshole yeah we got burned by a couple of guys, but then I then I found my special most special bird besides, I miss like it's got a couple things. One is so great hung people got to the young desert. Will people got to these we work and turkey's here in turkey's falaba. Citizens, I own, put, man like a view gig. If you can get and be successful,. Regularly successful like consistently successful in a place like this, you can be a good thing, hundred anywhere. You go therefore, to have the added thing of the race against the clock: no one that the more that you're trying to make that bird gobble goblin you doing everything right is going to get that beard goblin the more you their bird goblin, the more other paper with his bare goblin. It's almost,
you'd, refine thing by which you home. You'd refine a hunting strategy which is like job just don't gobble one guy wanted his birth, and I'm going to do I'm going to figure out some hunting strategy by which they just will not gobble. I don't want him excited air stay calm. and you too casually come in and as the not notify other hunters that you down here, because the More he's gone. You can always feel em. You can feel the people feel like you Why what it's fallen? Man, it's a whole, the challenge to hold a challenge in! It's something like The sea, where you would get frustrated whether by also see why it must make some really really good honours. Some turkey masters. I wish to come down here check out these creeks. Do man they're pretty room
to shop around dollars and and look at these creeks. It is come born out of the ground, I was really near isabel really hoping that we'd have an opportunity to float. That's partly what this area is known for. Our rivers are just second to none. You know and I'm a guy. I lived in Montana and colorado, and I'm telling you these ozark rivers they're. Just all you know, gravel bottom Crystal clear, their spring creeks dude, Poland sprang doesn't gave water clear net the shit bomblets store. it's christmas level. This water very looks cloudy compared to the previous round. Here we ve got incredible trout, fishing, but the small mouth is what is so attractive in others: great trout, fishing out west, but are smaller fish and hears just world. That's my mind, a small now this though they were wrapped up, but I do want acknowledged that you say of the super truthful. Is
That's why in my mind, a small school and the trout go ahead, I agree and we can float them and and and fish out of drift boat. The same way you would fish for rainbows out west and you're fishing them with you. Confession was spinning equipment, but I prefer to fly fish, and so it's like you're. It's like you're trout, fishing on a crystal clear spring creek, but you're you're fly fishing for lunker smallmouth and the fire for trout fisherman ability you know it's almost like it's almost like your fish in small is crystal clear old restaurant in nothing but ardor nothin fight harder than us mamma. I agree, I think, that we used to say in michigan areas. Like my power for power, I was a fourth freshwater fish. It's hard to find a rival and palm for pound fight inability, small, that's for sure either either. I think they're. At least
seven times cooler than large mouths and what will be what will take second place, Fresh warrior: blue, no share pounds per pound. Note algarve about the shape of that thing right and it's tough fish into, because how clear the water is, so you do not let you do really good at dawn and does so in your out vision with some poppers or any kind of surface plugged thrown a mouse or anything for these small mouth at dusk, and they just come up and destroy it. On the surface man, it's exhilarating argue picture that you'd have to use them some fine for or carbon line or somethin air. With all that light knowledge. Clarity, certainly
in the daytime yeah. Alright, thanks for listening, oh you know, I gotta work on a guy emailed it and he says I have the worst way to end this, the worst ending for a show he's ever heard, and he says I need to work on a catch phrase oh like, who is that guy who'd say like good night and good luck, Walter, Cronkite yeah, something like that. I need to work on something catchphrase good heart and you freeloaders. Someone in london.
