Then
a man that confesses to the arson and then Shortly thereafter disappears this case is nuts and I'm excited to talk about it, so that what are we talking about tonight tonight? him up Matthias bach Meyer. This happened in august of ninety. Ninety six impressed in washington now sergeant Spock Meyer had work further, king county sheriffs department for twenty five years sky was a career officer. He was closed. Retirement. That's long time to work for law enforcement now during his twenty five years it was on february forth of nineteen. Eighty eight were officer buck meyer What an app shooting a thirty two year old man named guadeloupe areas. This was

How did that go down and well this occurred at an x on east of renton bach Meyer saw, and standing behind the palms at the hague, station, which was closed at the time, so he was but why was standing there? He got out of his patrol car and approached him went back by our got to the front of the car. He also pulled out a rifle and fired at least two shots the windshield and missed bach meyer, but bach my return fire hitting rios three times in the chest. That's a crazy situation for any police officer to be in the gas station. It's closed. So there is not a lot of fun: going on here but rio's did have some time to come. elements and he had some other problems too. He medication for manic, depression or bipolar and
been seeing a councillor for part of his probation. He also was the father of six children in nice, Eighty three rios was convicted of assault, can decency and disorder they conduct, was given a no contact order by a thrift way supermarket near that exxon station, where he was shot, corners in quest about the shooting rule: five to one that officer bach Meyer, was justified in the shooting, bach Meyer testified, He shot reuse three times in the chest, of course, After risk at fired upon him and his police vehicle on mate, nineteen. I never saw any right Let the scene, I never heard any shots other than from the officers pistol have he claimed he had a friend approached bach mire to see what was going on. Bach mire told him. If you don't want to look like him get the hell out of here. Another witness named Kevin Wiess and a fourteen year old wit as also signed affidavit, stating they never saw a gun near rios. That's interesting that many people are saying they never heard the shots fired, or saw a gun. him, although if it was a twenty two caliber rifle they're, not that loud, but it still
sound like a firecracker or something like that. I'd think that somebody would hear a report of something but they're saying there believed this officers story, but when it's up These officers word against a citizen with a record scanner com usually in the officer's favor. At that time, Meyer been reassigned from patrol to the special operations division to help with security for the ninety ninety goodwill games. He didn't interview with the news tribune and in it he that nobody by him and rios were there until back up arrived minutes later. So obviously, this is contradicting the witness statements. He said about the air David from Randal whitlock I'd be interested to see what a polygraph would do with that person. In other words here to see this polygraph given to this guy, because he saying there's no way he was there, he probably fail it. That's what I'm reading into It- and he so says that someone,
a complaint to the fbi and there was a independent view an investigation into the shooting he claimed that in may he received a letter signed by the chief of the criminal section of the? U S, o j clearing him of any wrong doing so he sang this was a clean shoot. He was justified. June of nineteen eighty nine, the king county prosecutor's office, declined to seek a second inquest and deputy skater wrong clarke said they couldn't contact the three witnesses and too Three had outstanding warrants and I take that Well, we couldn't get a hold of them in two of them appear to be criminals anyway, but there was, civil law suits filed and the county would end up paying the real family twenty thousand dollars for a settlement there. an additional lawsuit that accused bach Myra police brutality. This was a nineteen eighty, nine, the county, settled
a year later, four hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. This is where this, story gets interesting aaron because there is a fire at all: sir Matthias buck myers home in rent in washington. This takes us this July, ninth nineteen, Ninety six, the fight started at one. I am the police in that negation found that the fire was set in multiple places in the home. So obviously was arson. There's no question about it. The police so found a message- on a detached storage building that said pigs each shit you're dead, real lives. Ninety six and your is spelled why? Oh, you are not why? Oh, you apostrophe r e, but not everybody knows france between you and you are. They also found
damaged personal items and papers outside the house, including bach myers? link trophies limited edition, prince jewellery, an ceramic pigs, not sure what those are all about more collectible right and the way I take this is how odd is it he was out bowling that night. Someone sets to his home and leaves this terrible message on what appeared to be possibly as garage Yet all these personal items that you would think would be special to baulk Meyer are outside the home, and you wonder where these attempted be stolen. Did they really want his calling balls, these limited edition prince the jury and they left For some reason were they interrupted? What was the story here? Meyer wasn't home. As you said, he told the
skaters. That he left his house on his motorcycle at around eleven forty five p m to go to bowling alley, which is about eight and a half miles from his home at around one. I am. He went to the sky way, part ball, which was three miles from his home. He was at the sky way I can tell the little after two a m employees. Ported. Seeing him there we nine to eleven p m and from twelve forty five to two a m, so he he wasn't home at the time of this fire, but as they like further into this arson and instigation do find that the x, aren't was gasoline cans and they flares like road flares stuck in them, which dont know a road flare burns very slowly, and this could delay
ignition of the fire to the gas we can, they enter you'd neighbours, and at least one testified that she saw. A man who she thought was bach meyer. Backing is driveway on his motorcycle just before one a m which is interesting but its unclear who was there and bach mire? and his co workers at least believed that this was in retaliation for The shooting of water barriers years before. Now later in the week bach myers girlfriend up sir roberta myers. Confronted him about the undamaged items, she found it very suspicious and she often stayed at his home and his response. Was the items were stolen on July seventh and he found a note. bring him to bring five hundred dollars to the rent in stadium, to get the items back and what's he got them here? them in the storage building. He said
leave the arson was related to the burglary, but his girlfriend didn't believe him and yet, She didn't share his statement with the police or insurance investigators at that time. So We have the rio shooting. Where are? We say: there's a message saying rios lives, and he saying that these items were stolen in held for ransom bowling trophy isn't stuff, shady there. I think he also talked about this another off surnamed Diana NAFTA and he replied, They thought the arson was connected to the real shooting to the burglary and or he told her that he in a buddy found one of the hour and this in eastern washington, but he tell something different is supervising captain. He said at the arson, was not connected to the shooting and he had recently contacted the arsonists through an informant. He said the arson
was an undocumented immigrants involved in drug trafficking and that they had moved to california after they were threatened. Because this informal was old, you're going to be reported to the iron ass, so that's it! sting change of events there, but bachman, did not share any of this information with the insurance investigators or the rent and police who were investigating the arson. I think that would be free helpful for the investigating officers but officer bach mire, continued his normal duties during this investigation and meanwhile they were kind of looking at to him ass, a central suspect, and why wouldn't they? Because if all of his. four items- are harmed and the fire. It's kind of strange: you would think that you do set your home on fire or if your home catches fire what
the things that are irreplaceable. You, I think we're photos trophies things like that You wouldn't want to lose those things. That's always that idea! was the first thing you would say from your house if it was on fire. Patently this but the investigators are thinking officer. Bach Meyer did take all of these valuable or nostalgic items and make sure they were safe, its august tent, of ninety ninety six, where, through five year old jane Brady ran call nine one want to make a complaint about His neighbor, slash, landlord and officer bach Meyer is despatched. To this call, the dispatch sent two officers, but bach mire responded over the radio that he could handle it himself, joy, I ran had been involved in a dispute with both his room
and his landlord, who was his roommates brother. So it's not in James runs favour here that he's arguing with his room, mate and a landlord, but apparently his roommate emit Marcel shot him in the leg, because James had it his fingers with a hammer while they were trying to build a shed together This is one of those dispute, that shouldn't involve a gun. But the tomb had been living together since ninety ninety they had actually mean, in prison, wren had received disability payments for head injury that impaired his mental function, so rehn is just trying to get by he had suffered. third, a head injury and a terrible accident prevented him from working and he's lying. what this guy named in it also had some mental health. problems and being
de radically and violently alot of the times. So after James accidentally, it's in its fingers with a hammer, emmett grabs, a gun in its james and then refuses to take james to the hospital unless he agreed that James he shot him on a hill top near tacoma, something like it This weird convoluted story right aired well: Emmett doesn't want to go back to prison, so he sorry to be a story that covers him. So he finally does take him, and while James is in the hospital, Emmett crashed his truck and was then arrested. So Emmett is, of course, manic depressive he's a bit era. I and he later threatened his neighbours not to testify against him about the crash. Emmets bro. the landlord Robert sell lived across the street from the two men and owned the house that they lived in when James ran return from the hospital at the end of july
robber gave him a wheelchair and help to move out, but james told his family that Robert kicked him out. There was no assistance. He just got rid of him This is a dispute between august seventh and eighth james called the police six times to report that his truck had been wrecked and Robert burglarize, the home and evicted him so they're, going back and forth van de lysine emptying each other's air out of their tyres the morning august, tenth emmett called the police. Requests an officer to serve a restraining order against his brother. Soon after Robert called the police to request an officer to stand by while he removed the furniture from the home. He also reported that in it and James falsely, reported the shooting too, that tacoma police, meaning he made it story that this was
accidental shooting that happened in tacoma and not within the home after a dispute yeah just a big mass rally, and we have all these guys making all these claims. I can't imagine what the officers had to deal with here. This seems like a big pain. Sir Bach Meyer responded to this call and he's that he was leaving from the falsity police sub station and once he arrived on the scene, he said he didn't need backup. Everything was under control witnesses. Would later testify that bach Meyer told Robert that he would take James wren too. falsity substitution for an hour and a half, so he could take the furniture. the house meeting, I'm going a separate you guys, you can get the furniture out. I'm gonna have James fill out some paperwork so bachman put james into his patrol car and
old neighbours that he was taking him to that sub station to take a written statement from James. So multiple people happened, by sergeant bach meyer, that James was headed to the police station and he was gonna have to take out a statement. Is that really undisputed? This point now there interesting thing here. Aaron is this is the last time anyone would see James ryan. He would die here shortly after this. During this interview, if you want to call it that box, higher states that James wren told about this dispute. He was having with his landlord and everybody, but then says. James wren admitted to having information or being involved in this house being burned down and myers house being set. fire, that's interesting, so part
His statement involves this whole story about how he helped another man. break into bach minors omen set on fire. That's really weird, because you would think that if he's admitted to this that he would be under arrest yeah, you would think that he has information about a police officer his home being set on fire I'd, be kind of a big deal, but this it meant was taken and James Ryan is released at ten Three p m bach Meyer requested worn information for Emmett Marcel Soon, after bach mire responded to an alarm at a credit union in false city, about six blocks from the station another off sir had been assigned to this call. But bach mire responded and reported all clear. He said he would wait for the staff to respond to the alarm, and then it was at and thirty, nine bach, my reported that he completed

He said that the complaint in preston probably did not exist or something was wrong with the complaint he said he didn't need to file any paperwork for the call. That's interesting and bach. His dogs were not being looked after by him and later had to be euthanize So, at the end of august, Spock Meyer had told his fellow officer, Dana left that Arson was connected to a traffic stop in false city, where he seized three bags of met and four thousand dollars in cash, the occupants
I'd the car were two men named Jose Hernandez in rim fro or wren. So I think, he's kind Connecting james ran to theirs. Arson now. That's what I'm saying he claimed the two men later burglary, his house and called him to demand the drugs and money in exchange for his property when they learned he didn't have the drugs they went sound to kill him, but since he was There they set the house on fire instead, so Diana nabbed offered to help him recover the drugs. But he told her He threw them into a field on highway to o to a farmer head plowed the field. This is to stay because he seized drugs and cash, but didn't put it into the oven, this room he held onto it and now he sang they came back for it because they knew that he kept the method. Cash for himself and now
stella officers offering to help recover the drugs for him. Getting really shady on september. Second backfired. his girlfriend roberta myers, that the arson was related to a traffic stop where he seized four thousand dollars and white powder drugs from a man named pepe, Hernandez he said Hernandez, burglarized his house your found Hernandez his van involves city and recovered his property when on the van. He saw another man running away when he responded the common preston on august tenth, recognize the man he saw earlier as James wren we go back to he saying that james confessed to the arson and burglary on august tenth, and he gave James money. He seized and told them today pepper Hernandez to leave him alone. I have to stop there because I can't imagine for the life of me why any officer, let alone this sergeant, would do such a thing
I just say I don't believe him, then it makes sense, because I dont that he would just give someone who has confessed to a crime a bunch of money and say give this to your body that why you guys leave me alone and when we analyze. Anybody statements criminal, otherwise, the more there story changes the more. question them. If the huh When did it, and these, like, oh, my wife, fell down the stairs and then its oh, she was suicidal or oh, I wasn't home at the time and now I'm tell you. is handing the money over. I don't buy. That are all the fact that this stuff wasn't taken in and logged properly. Tells me everything I need to know at this point. This is not something to be trusted, he's hold, on drugs and money that he should be filing a police report on September. Fourth, bach Meyer gave the rent in police a five page hand. Written statement he claimed was from James ran. This should be powerful evidence. The statement recounted james's connection to hay, seuss or jose Hernandez and its participation in the book larry and arson. According to the statement after arson Hernandez said he was returning to california and james plan to leave the area as well, but the police are suspicious of bach buyer and they said testing the patrol car and they fine, traces of blood in the backseat of his patrol car, which
not unusual aaron. Sometimes people get scraped during the arrest and they might leave some traces of blood, but this was asked We kind of a lot of blood that they find when they tested it all belong. Stu, James rent and its? Multiple items is not just in the back seat. It's on a sample case. It's on a camera case day, planner work, shoes, and so they start digging deeper. They remove the vinyl on the back seat and there's more on the seams and cushion foam- it's actually bled through HU, the stitching at the cushions now off, Bach Meyer will say well, James rents knows was bleeding and that's why his blood all over the place I've seen some people with some pretty nasty nosebleed therein, but they actually tried to recreate this. They took the back seat, the patrol car and they put a dummies, huh
had down on it and they started pumping fake blood out of the dummies knows onto the sea cushions in order to get amount, a blood that was soaked into discussion. I think it took three or four. courts of blood which the hake, with a lot to the point of view, need to be hospitalized because your probably the die soon with that much blood loss, so the together, we are thinking tat, and really add up they that putting him on paid administrative leave on September eleventh, let's go back and sergeant bach myers career? Because if you just say a twenty five year- careers, police officer. That sounds good because not mentioning anything else. But what should we know about sergeant park? Meyer, During his twenty five year career, he had two dozen citizen complaints made against him. Six of those
sustained by internal probes but form king county sheriff. Jim Montgomery ruled one of the complaints no contest. So a lot these are going through Bach meyer, involved in two shootings, both of you, were ruled justifiable. But I've spoken to a lot of police officers, some of whom have never drawn their weapon in the line of duty. Some whom say: yeah, it's unlikely you'll be involved in a police shooting it's rare, some of whom have been involved in a police. shooting, but its very rare to be involved in two its highly unlikely, just the math doesn't add up there. But again, when you take an Officers word and you dont have body, can back. Then you don't have a lot of footage back then, and the issue things happen words only officer, bach meyer and the assailant well all we have is bach myers word that
person was shooting a twenty two caliber rifle at his car before he shot them back he claims it's an assailant, but if you can't really question it and that's how it went down the reports as it was an assailant so who attempted to harm him, now with all these other things that have come up, This evidence even His fellow officers are looking at him in a different light, so this spend review actually does deep into one of these complaints involving bach meyer on December fourteen ninety five bach, my responding to a neighborhood complaint about an hour. I'd light shining into someone else's bedroom. So we knock em. nor the house, with a light on women, when answered, he entered the home and arrested everett johnson, who was asleep johns I thought a burglar had entered his home, so he grabbed a rifle and pumped it twice: He put it down when you realise that backfire was a police officer, so
just entered this man's home while he was sleeping, and this man thought is being invaded and long story, short johnson sued king county he accused Bach Meyer, dragging him outside putting a menace patrol car and searching the house without a warrant or probable cause and driving him to the police, a high speeds, the counties that'll to suit for forty thousand dollars four years later and bach Meyer was not disciplined for that incident. Back meyer, was accused of police brutality and nineteen. Eighty nine law suit in which county settled for a hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. He was all accused of shattering David Van mortals cheekbone with a night stick during it, I stopped again meyer- was not disciplined for this incident. just seems, he is escalating situations like a light on a citizen's home, so we as the home there is this true.
Stop we don't know what exactly went down, but he the pilates nightstick and hit somebody in the face with it. Normally police procedure. Dick It's that you never strike any one in the head with a night stick or baton, you hit them in the leg or large muscle groups to get compliance. and it's really strange because sheriff Jim Montgomery, who have already mentioned said the department was not always informed of lawsuits and settlements, but bach mire did not regularly receive complaints. I find this strange I would that if there's a settlement for a hundred twenty five thousand dollars, you would hear about it and there are what over twenty complaints made against the sky. How could that go unnoticed? So, on november Thirteen nineteen, eighty six sergeant Meyer was arrested on the fifteenth he was charged with agro it first degree: murder prosecutors, in the case they didn't
that Bach meyer and James rented ever met before their theory was that bach Meyer set his home on higher to collect and insurance pay out. But he needs when to take the blame because he would be suspected of arson. So we obtained a false written confession from James about the fire, then killed him and disposed of the body when Bach mire pleaded he pleaded not guilty. So He prosecutors have a decision to make here. They really believe that bach myers,
something awful, but in the end they chose not to seek the death penalty because they couldn't find aims rents body january, when starting this trial, and so they have to that decision, but what happens february on ferries Can I eighty seven sky still remains were found in the cougar mountain regional park. Hikers found pieces of bone in plain view This happened around twelve fifty in the afternoon, so dental records were sought. And they were able to identify the remains as james bradley ran. Now, because there were just pieces of bone, they couldn't establish a cause of death. They found I'll fifteen to twenty percent of his remains and dirt This time, bach mire, of course, has been released from the police department, but still gets awarded a disability pension of it
these twenty six thousand dollars a year. Despite this trial, I think they could have delayed that for a little while, but now they award him. A pension now trial. One of the things that I thought Very interesting was when they found this man, remains. It was past the locked gate. There is a locked gay between area was found and public access and the key to that gay. Well, there was a key worked for that gate. On bach myers key ring and bach myers, former girl friend would later testify that he often took her into locked areas of county parks, meaning he had access and she said they had previously been together to the area of cougar mountain where jean, This remains were found so this I'll began, may fifth, nineteen. Eighty seven there is this report, the statement that bach mire says: wren
gave about the shooting about the arson about all of this stuff, and yet three different inks were used in the report It seemed that everywhere, rend signed was one type of ink and the first page and other type now. Maybe it's not a big deal, has maybe wren had used a different pan, but all the additional pages were brand can fast, to taking part in the arson were written with a third pan. Possum at a later date, so when they put this together, looking at it looks like bach Meyer had written, report up and had wren sign it. ray time sergeant back my wrote you're. It was your just like the threats written on it. I remember what you said earlier. You said while you are well, it should be. I owe you apostrophe r e. You are your, but instead ended up being your let me this is kind of like beverage.
from the robert durst case I mean, I know, a lot of people will get this grammatically wrong when the writing, but it just variant, saying that sergeant back meyer rights, it that way. and the threats on his home during the arson. It was written the same way that so between the key to this gate between blood in his please vehicle the way He writes your and Now we have a pattern of behaviour here with him escalating his arrests and traffic stops. I think we can paint a picture about sergeant, bark meyer. Well, yes, I mean the defence. They tried their best. They tried saying that Emmett Marcel may have killed James wren because of ninety ninety six shooting. They also said it's difficult to say this is a homicide for sure, because in there estimation there aren't enough bones found and all
they said you know what there's no murder weapon. So we don't for sure that james run was murdered and I don't you but to me hearing this kind of talk doesn't work, because there is too much and that a crime was committed against james ran by bach meyer, so To me that defense trying to introduce doubt they didn't introduce a doubt they needed a lot more than just anglo could have been this guy and and besides, we don't even know a crime has been committed when this guy's body was essentially found. His remains were found any way beyond a locked gate. They couldn't herman cause death, because all they found were bones. So That is the thence doing their job. But when we think o this woman was abducted, The last person she was seen with was this man and then his car is covered in her blood.
and then her remains- are found up on a mountain top weaken, connect the dots there and in x officer. Lock myerst case where connecting the dots on june third in seven. The jury convicted Matthias bach mire of aggravated, first gray, murder, but backfire. While can convicted his sister Mary, professed her brothers innocence and said there were too many questions unanswered and they knew it. I think she was speaking. a vacuum?
