Everyone dan here welcome to this week's up, so the fish before we. Gonna just wanna. Let you know about today's guest joining us this week we were, so excited to be joined by someone who is genuinely british nerd royalty. It is, of course, the lexicographer, the star of dictionary corner from countdown and eight out of ten cats does countdown, and that is susie dent now. Susie dent is someone that we do not. We basically monitor her twitter account on a twenty four hour basis. She's, just always pumping out incredible words with these definitions- and you ve never heard them before, and we ve never met before so this such an exciting moment for us not only to be able to meet her in person, have an ice chat, but also to sit down with her on stage in front of a crowd and dark out with her, oh yeah. I really hope you enjoy the episode we absolutely love did an outside of that. I just want to quickly mention that you need to
your hands on Susie's, two new upcoming books, the first one comes out september, twenty eightth, and that one is hold interesting stories about curious words, so it sort of older. Phrases that we know stealing thunder red herrings but whether they actually mean so this book is can be looking into those phrases and terms on your behalf so that you now know who was sweet, fanny Adams or why wire circles vicious all those questions that you might have had. She's put it into an ultimate compendium to explain it all That's out september, twenty eightth, but then on the fifth of october. She also has a book coming out called routes of happiness, a hundred words for joint hoping that it is a book for kids. Basically, Suzy had the idea when looking through a dictionary that there's far too many negative words in there and that we should be highlighting the more happy ones, the more uplifting ones so reading directly from a blurb here is going to
Do you out of your mobile fumbles, which is a slightly sad mood, make you grin like a giggle mug, which is someone who never stop smiling and have you feeling for b list extremely happy, so do pick up both those books, but until then enjoy Susie here live at the soho theatre, with no such thing as a fish on with the show
and welcomes you another episode of no such thing as a fish. A weekly part has this: we coming to live from this dinner in london. My name is dan schreiber, I'm sitting here with James hurricane, andrew hunter, Murray and seizing dance, and once again we have gathered round or microphones with our four favoured fangs from the last seven days and in no particular order. Here we go starting with fact number one, and that is susie a k, Samuel Johnson in his six may, the industry, which, in seventeen fifty five decided that he would not include any words beginning with the latter acts. because he that thus begins no word in the english language ass. My fact
true will resign phone must sit. This guy's areaway was its century later, but also he was quite picky in our legs cook this today we have really careful about not giving any opinion whatsoever even with words like trumpery nets, which my favorite me, something completely. Sherry bilaterally worthless would not allow anything, but he was, touristy route to the scots. You know about the americans, and so I think he probably didn't have much truck with anything from greek okay, but we did have x words at the time we had a few experts, but lots of them came later lovely words, often great, like Zendaya, which is a gift to strangers, which I think is really nice. But what was lovely is that it came from the phoenicians and they had a letter stomach which got as she gets
ass. We think, but that many fish, so you could say, there's no such thing as an ex ass, a title of the opposite side: a quick ass. We ve got our title. We did. They have xenophobe in those days, savage, then a phone as then a phobia. I think most phobias up based on greek, but we kind of made them up a little bit later, but we basement glasgow things like cool we're phobia affair of clowns, which I have they didn't have plans in ancient greece are. They chose What was still talker Michael was your heels over them because of the sort of welcome so now I like still silk again, but yeah clouds definitely No I've ever seen the new I set this minor. The now a content,
The reason I ask us at a phobia is the gas johnson. As you say, probably delight. The scots roma now have been honoured and ends here like the french gay, or he predicted that he'd right the dictionary in three years and then, when someone pointed out that had taken the french forty right, their own dictionary, he said well, this is proportion. Forty ties, forty sixteen hundred as three to sixteen hundred so is the portion of an englishman to a frenchman, yeah right, yeah wow. So forty two thousand words made it into this first dictionary that he did write forty two thousand definitions and he had self deprecating jokes that he kind of included in there, which is quite fun so yeah. The word for dull. The description for the word dull he explained to make dictionaries is dull.
As part of its description and then also the definition of lexicographer, he wrote a writer of dictionaries, a harmless rush. You know it. My heart is a radical and analysing these. Quite he would never admit that you didn't know a word which is quite funding, say or the or the origin of the word so and spider I loved. He can quite get rate of spider say he just said: is this not the insect that spot? from a door came from its not inside my right. Exactly feels like such a delight to see any old bollocks era of study just feels like such a great time to be alive, and you would have absolutely I would have been. I would have been king back then yeah, that is straight. He was one of the last people in england to be touched for sgraffito.
yeah, so cool herbal words, coffee les graves yeah, and he is just as good condition and the moloch with touch people and effectively cure them, but ineffectually then, let's go further and Samuel Johnson parents took him to london from his home town when it was three years old. You know you look a powerful baby club together, raise the money they send you off and the queen. The molecule touch you a big big cues as well rivalries, yet how the second I thought we might have hoped this boy. He touched something like two percent of the population of england lie
How do you think you could study? There was a time of efforts under lock and unjust some. How does he had a gold coin so clean and touch peaks, which is the sort of it didn't work and now she's quite disfigured his face, threescore fewer errors that yeah Edward there's, some really weird but lovely at my ease in their assets to ranch lose an insect inside. He does actually an insect get. His bite can only be cured by music because it was thought it could be cleared up tarantella don wow was that proper doctor's advice at the time really wow? Is there a doctor in the house doctor? Yes, getting a hurdy gurdy to this woman now and then he had to retro mentioned stay, which means pissing. quit fat. I wait. What do you say? Pissing backwards? You don't mean sucking up into your body. I think that's like a book I held it:
I think, he's like some animals. The penis points backwards, right wing, and so a wretch from mentions mammal venus is on the back of its feet. that's right. I think this is a bit like working thank shove. It up your body. Like other industrial? Sometimes when you need to p- and you don't want to see that the hold has a sock action to it as well? Am I learn here and that I think might be alone. I probably think about it. You're gonna, like I, really need to pay, and you got you doing you are. I am I am as well. If you are holding on so tight is piss, you pressed on what is going on That means desperately to forces mostly it's kind of desperate pay, but holding it in tissue crust, pissy precedent,
is suppressed, don't do it on the coast as it can take a row. He supposedly died from doing that. Didn't he and his famous astronomer he deems that a deterrent. He was too polite, yeah and his bladder exploded. So don't do that done will he I imagine johnson would have had to pay a lot because supposedly he could drink in one sitting, twenty five cups of tea in war. He loved his tea. He loved his food Boswell wrote about this puzzle would say that to watch him eat was like watching the most intense thing ever. He would not have any conversation. He was just rampaging through his boot, the brains on his head, we're like pulsating. He was just a man assessed with needing to get the needed that would reading as well. He would he would just
it's really hard and and twenty five cups of tea is what I read as wow. That is amazing. He lived at the same time as France's gross. He really was grace by thicker yeah right said, Johnson always chose the classical references for his dictionary and tastes. Quite a purist originally anyway, and then France's grace went to the brothels and the taverns and picked up the streets. Lange and I didn't. If they ever met right away. I bet they would have had a good dinner party. They would have known about each other. I think my words yeah. So while he is solve harmlessly drudging away he's thinking of this other guy he's gonna must been terrible. I, like some his definitions. So the word etch is a country word of which I know not the meaning of the word deflection. The definition is a defeat. Sure.
Right after I got against a brothel. This area is what he five cups of t: wake you just across the room that that's grave, a sock, something put between the foot in the shoe good lunch. This is good lunch as Food is ones hand can hold out for that, a gal pen and get things that gap, and this is much they can hold them in a single hand and which- and I think yet, units to hand. The biscuit gets a biscuit measurements. Ass, prelim. I've got a couple of ex word things yet so the word x ray you note. The x x, ray stance, Unknown just eggs, he didn't know what it was just gonna, perhaps half an hour when they work out what it is, we can try hasn't been changed. Ethical prevent didn't raise. That would be not. There is
If the taliban can, he was called from germany as an say yeah. When can rain days, yeah yeah, maybe you notice one of the x men why they call it the I have no idea as it cause they spend all that time on twitter yeah! Well, I thought it was because professor ex professor exuviae vessel acts, acts, others say yeah, but no it's it's extra power, which was said in a calm. the railways and just wall where, if you insist, we continue on I just discovered an amazing character from x men never heard of before. So did you know that? character in X. Men called forget me not I know that because they are either, because if, if he is out of your sight, no one can remember him.
so. The first time we meet him is someone from x men going on. He said I've been here six years and no one can remember this guy, it's and that's a great superpower. Not if you want to be part of the team yeah, but robbing a bank yeah go in Well, a bank leave, that's true, just carry on with the day. I think it's really good soup. I think this heroes generally are robbing the banks, but professor excellently reason, he knew existed because he said like alarm on as iphone or whatever to remind him. Every so often like forget me, you're not so character and in our comic book go so, though, professor x isn't aware that it's a comic book that he's taken that has always just as I was leaving, broke the fourth wall anyway. I dunno alright, let me get that out. I've got another ex for you. Oh yeah ex, when you watch things like not the normal speed like one times
There are times when it does it. Just a quick show like boobs pew he'll, regularly, watches things sped up. Your regular listens to podcasts sped up That's I insights. Our voices are probably why they talking so one stage whether another episode. Yet what is it? What does do up or gas better it slowed down the do you find an ex cat fuel axes or messages, because I was having this conversation with brilliant greg, jenna history, and so he said at x and it's only just being kind of okay when the last ten years, the platonic texts- between friends at length is more romantic and he would never put three axes, and he- and I said why put through access to my best, when will the time he looked up on his fine all porn.
Did you know that three x is not because of the bar greg's phone that various references man's lover? I think some of the interesting thing about that is the first use we have of adding expert kisses orient recent light. That is, from seventeen sixty three. And they did seven axes. Wow, that's a lie, Let's just go straight in with seven wow guess I couldn't say only risk in the well yeah. They think that it was like a blessing gray and it was like the air ass I heard, but this is in relation to x rated, but it was based on the skull and crossbones. Maybe oh really. I was exclusively films, which featured pirate you know I play jake is called blue. Sorry didn't why blue jake is blue, no sense is used to have a blue pencil and also lacks work is imprisoned.
Where blue gowns only really great gowns blue gowns there, are you the birthday prisoners in this it prisoners? Only I had lain visiting uniforms and I will say when you ve got a visit. Your friend light, so we run out of the white for visitors. Do my wearing blue andy? While you was a visit, I via the law, needs launch. The uk soaring took the vulgar stopped apart
asked hi, everybody just wanted to let you know we are sponsored this week by linkedin jobs. Ten years ago we were doing a a three person, podcast be james here and anna and we were going nowhere and then we we hired a little little guy called dan shriver and everything changed yes, but they'll make the mistake that we did in stature go to link to jobs because legs head is the place to find the right people for your to. You is the place to find the faster and it's a place to find them for free. What you do is you add your job to your leg. Ten and then you add a purple
hashtag, hiring frame to your profile, and everyone can see at just a glance that you're the kind of person who's. Looking for a new hire. That's right, there are screening. Questions are all sorts of simple tools that make it easier to focus on the candidates with the right skills. Maybe they can pronounce words correctly check the facts. Maybe they don't believe in the loch ness monster so find the qualified candidates that you want to talk to faster by posting, your job for free at linkedin, dot, com forward, slash fish, that's right, just go to linked in dot com, slash fish and you will be able to post your for free terms and conditions apply. Ok, I'm with the bad guys over the side. For fact number too, and that is James. Ok, my thought this week is that in nineteen eighty six, a group of mass teachers organised a protest in washington d c against the use of calculators in schools that protest
well because they couldn't get the numbers. that fell at the ironic. That moment, you became a dad subjugate fact guys arising maybe time for numbers round to see. If I can make that connection since nineteen eighty six, I bet know either let no one even better. The time is right and I think all of us are met, wouldn't it amounts. It was a gathering of six thousand maths teachers. But they were at the organic about it. Wasn't a massive story in the newspapers. I must not then, but it wasn't. The newspapers and, like you say, was a national council features of mathematics, of the roma teachers with six thousand of them there, and there are about fifteen of them. We think you hadn't cards and songs and they were protesting against kalkhi pollux because they thought
that these kids, because they were using calculators. They won't be able to do normal maths, they would just kind of rely on them and they won't be able to do any kind of multiplication or anything like that. Yeah. It was a simpler time. Was It was on our kids and s grades, excellent, terrible stuff. They do typing in boobs upside down, because the more innocent I gather it's amazing the buttons nuff until the brains trained and they chanted calculators later we shall not be moved calculated, it is good. There was Andy interviewed them. In the newspaper I was reading, they interviewed the leader John saxon, who organised whole thing than they said poor, mister saxon. Why? The no teaches you know why view on the gulf fifteen people and he said, teaches don't lights, demonstrate as they are shy. Burn of, I guess, rithmetic, as is an important thing. I read something that yes easy. I want to know if this is something you still do, but according to an end
you gave every single morning. You do your seventy five times table and I think I was being little bad whimsical. I know it was a very very long time if seventy five came up on the countdown board. I just gave up because I cant do five. Seventy five. I have to write it. I didn't watch this and the more I struggled with it. The worse it go because I became fixated on it, so that was probably where it came from. I don't know why is stupider style job that got together numbers, though, is it like? You can just let rachel do all that stuff, and I really do try and she's very good at giving through yoga.
and seventy five the whole you can see at home is that these got a calculator and that we've better to this that took him. Fifteen minutes to the guy who listens to slow down is not going to get to the level of those old calculating methods because calculate is from calculus little pebble because they countered with stones and then had abacus it's a it's a political, hot potato though we yeah. So for example, does it harm whether you can do mental arithmetic if you use a calculator all the time in your opinion? Yes, probably okay, well you're, you're in good company, because it took twenty eleven. There was a british mp who let's construct public concerns of this is that I would describe this country is in love with the calculator from a very early age, and so the too easy access to calculators is available at local schools, Oh, the ip liz trusts
commander. Large numbers. Soussio great lovely tat reminds me of the petition to and get rid of all french words from the british passport. and it went online and got quite good signatures without realizing the post boys french on my refresh is a hiding to nothing. Human calculators are amazing people who could do incredible.
I had so that was. I was reading an interview with the twenty twenty world champion, who is an indian guy who's, killed nila concept by new prakash, and he got to a quite interesting way. He was confined to bed as a child for a year and loads of people who are amazing at mental maths, have either been confined to bed all day have been in solitary confinement or like something's happened. Where they've lived in their imagination for a long time, and so all the way through school, he would spend six to seven hours a day, practicing mental arithmetic just doing that, and when he was interviewed by the bbc throughout the he recited his forty eight times table and when he's talking to someone, he will count how many times they blink just to keep himself engaged at the conversation. Yeah. That's amazing, like ooh, yeah, there's been loads of them. Have that In fact, one of the things that you have to do if Guinness want to find out if you're the fastest at work things out is they'll. Give you a one hundred digit number and ass she to work out the thirteenth route.
so the square root is two things. Are you times together to get to that number, so imagine than a cube reaches. The things he multiplied together to get to that number. You have to go all the way down to thirteen, so it might be thirty. Seven. I'm thirty seven times that are sometimes thirty. Seven thirteen times is the answer to the power of thirteen is the number they give you the first place, that's right the question to be honest, I don't think you're going to trouble the guinness warehouse describing this has put me into a sort of defensive crouch, the thirty throught I look at yeah and I was reading about a guy call them klain. Who was the record This was in the eighties. About used must be still quite close. A humanist minute twenty seconds, but his tactic was to mutter in dutch. While he was doing the calculations and he would only much swear words. So if I might not achieved in africa and I got two hundred sixty three and it would be right. Every single time is that so much science behind
swearing, lowering acoustic levels and raising the ceiling in levels, then you know that experiment with you dip your arm in ice cold water has been twice as long if you're, shouting, bullocks and if you're shopping, bus and say it and there's a little allow keys here is that kid said that that's what he was doing- wow, that's so cool yeah,
okay. Would it help doing this podcast if I just said bollocks all the way from cause? That's what guns, because the women say that if we lived in the time of Samuel Johnson here's the thing you have to do at the mental calculation world cup just another example of what so the calendar is the calendar round. This is an exciting round. You get given a list of dates from sixteen hundreds to twenty one, one hundred years and you've, given sixty seconds to name the day of the week that every one of those dates happened on bog. As you get it right, you get a minute to do it. Okay, yep, and this great long list of of days. Like twenty four, the february great sixty notary Monday right, even as a mandate or the body we have you got me,
answer smoke the funniest guys. I got this proof that it was a monday but the point, but oh my god. That sounds like the weather than that. He may have got it right. That's true! But what I'm saying is next question: people who could do it even more effectively the just randomly guessing regrettably rapidly, so the records the record when an entity twelve with some good now fully odessa. Ok, they got fifty in a minute. Why was I augur? They went on Monday that whether they were monday. The bank has now, but that doesn't mean razumihin down last monday, thursday used to say that I think the right track sound that Iraq really thanks. I've met someone who can do that. It takes them a tiny bit longer, obviously, but we're talking about a travel agent area than you can say any day and they go there and they work it out. There are tricks. You couldn't marker history in certain ways to get you so that what we want
I dunno, like a civil war, broke out on a Wednesday resume theory and a half years earlier, Buenas yeah, but that was when they used to be people who would go on stage and you would ask them to multiply two numbers together and they'd just be able to do it and that will be the whole act, pretty good. It's pretty cool that is verifiable for everyone in the crowd as well. That's true, but that's good, but that's only because if you've got someone on stage who is doing this, While they do it, though they were the elevator, there will be also much quicker than that for the shore, but so you're right would be quite on their viable, but the tricks they used to use. Basically those loads of mass tricks. Lay you would see on countdown has let your nine times table is one way of doing that. Removing things running things to a hundred all these different tricks they have, but the way that they would mostly go. There is Someone with us, you too must play this by this, and then you go ok. What were they again keep stalling your eyes, but you are already doing in your head and then you would multiply the numbers, and if I must place you know
I would always start from the digits work. My way up to the highest number, but they would always start with the highest number they might say so. Seventeen million and they're working out the next ones as they go along, but I haven't got there yet why cells they would be able to say, like I can answer the question immediately, but actually they're kind of working out as they went along, basing pretty clever, isn't it yeah? I once got brought up to the front of my school. When I was a teenager in high school and told on the spot, Daniel has achieved the top percentage. People in new south wales, australia for mathematics in the recent exam that we took as part of the It was a multiple choice in everyone's very mother. I literally guest every single answer, because I knew nothing about mathematics and I just happened through luke.
I think that arise count. I still haven't certificate for the greatest mathematicians adieu, south wales, of my very whether they did they sort of sable. This is great cause. We would be willing to put some security at providing Diario guy, a vague, older ward, always like always an idiot now it was. It was humiliating so that the certificate so please, and yet it is fascinating watching countdown, and I know that you saying that you you'd like to do it as well, but wanting rachel be able to get to those sons. Is How do you like magic? Doesn't when yeah? It really does the camera crew had been with us for such a long time is well there also very nerdy, so they did not approve of teaching, One is when I ever mention an orphaned negative, which is when you have things like ruley grunsfeld shuffled will shovel doesn't exist, but I'm ruth full gone full stuff, like that. Whenever I mentioned the negative they got and whenever rachel says yes, that's the sum of two
ams, show that we supposed that the cameramen like play along with the game. Do you think they do yeah? I think it looks camera women as well, but they're all brilliant and am covered wasn't ticking you, oh yeah. I reckon they did not get the conundrum and though more familiar with a quick process thing? Another protest, shocking? Is the drapes waited with James elles folk? Have we have so many camera remit? It would be really bad may notes mentioned. I earnestly wasn't having a dig.
The cinematography is china, like the thing I want to mention about protest is my favorite. Things are blurred recently in nineteen sixty six, the procrastinators club of america, how the protest against the war eighteen, twelve and and they made signs at everything they were protesting it and the the club newsletter that came out after it announced that the protests had in fact been a success, because a treaty has now been signed good on them. ok. It is time for fact, number three, and that is andy by factors that for thirty years, tibetan buddhists have been
having fish from certain death and releasing them back into nature. Unfortunately, it turns out, they have unwittingly been feeding them all straight to the local otters. So there's this ritual frank shrank is very very ancient. Traditional thing it is called like life release is what it means you you get animals the were destined for, slaughter and and use of you, you free them, and you use your way of what paying a debt back to the universe. Is that kind of thing and is the ninety nine days there are lots of bullets in tibet, have been buying up fish from fishmarkets life once and releasing them into local rivers? Thousands them yeah. Unfortunately, there's a recent scientific report which has looked at the the state of the nearby rivers, because I mean it's not a great thing to do in terms of ecology. You know lots of that's pretty invasive species risk and it'll completely mess up. The local ecosystem anyway turns out that there are almost no fish left in the rivers and the auto feces are
it's the full of the fish that have been released into the river, so they have been kind of helping to turn away either they've like a lot of very, very fat, happy autres of this river yeah, but the authors of stopping the the non native fish from destroying the ecosystem. So in many ways is a happy story, but not for them if they really First, what I've been doing right now for the fish that get confused immediately oh come on, for the butter saw. What do you reckon can support my pedigree? as a german word for it, switches. I wonder if you ve heard it's easy. Is verse slim bessel, slim, Macedonia. The definition is an attempted improvement that makes things worse right well and you just neither I mean I did say a peek at my notes in vietnam, does this whole industries and their of people capturing animals so that they can then be released?
think and obviously is quite bad and lots of places, and they looked in singapore and in south east asia, and that just fine in all of these lizards and stuff which shouldn't be there and yet they are, and soda singapore is federation is saying that maybe you should just maybe just not eat meats. Instead, though, I'd give some money to animal shelters. Just anything other than doing this thing, which is inherently quite lately, it does, is slightly mess things up, but there is something to be said that he go to a restaurant. I speak with the vet j hate that guy to a restaurant, and you see a tank full of lobsters. I mean that's just I would do anything to rescue those things.
I would go and dump them in the like lo yeah. I can see why I can see why, though, I definitely understand that yeah for sure you got some in Shanghai. What happens is that again, when the weather, the people turn up to carry out the feng shang ritual a lot of people turn up selling them live turtles at very inflated prices. Already, like that, they've created a secondary market in turtles at this point, There are also fishermen biting that sorry, fisherfolk anglers waiting with net is a but literally twenty. Is away so yeah, yeah yeah. It creates a lot of isn't it it's interesting for what economics point of view, but also like the tentpole putins tend to be full of titles, because people just shove, loads and loads of the men, and obviously you can only have so many titles living in the pond before they have time. With that yeah these fish would cop one day,
Yes, there was idea why you're sitting in that I was thinking. Why do we cop on about something or whether that's gotten they just do it by knew that it's from a latin were being pulled to pieces? Likewise, copies sort of like tufts that you kind of pull findings clinics with the fish order to receive a copy come on. You can help others. What so what's harping on this is climbing embassy playing the saying now on how Roma had to call upon us to criticise and just kind of constantly africa stock carping coming gay. I can. I just make sure that the fish question yes, is cop pulling solely upon related to kabul, tunnels dream on raw condition, Oh, that's interesting! Yeah! Maybe I don't know the answer. That's a very good one related to yeah. My favorite fish is the code, because code meant discretion
fish is poised to that sorry, I must take it if you'll be all at the heart of its because it looks like a bag, apparently the things and called to peacefully peace. These greater and brackets go back to a spanish word, meaning caught peace because their bit, support the architectural brackets, but also the kind of support that view sentence was not that lovely and they have you heard. The start of the gradual ida is great, but that's the thing is nice that gives greater was a sort of set of brackets. Yes gently supporting other things, Let's keep going days a week, otherwise, isn't it caught? Peace courtiers but I wonder if what, if you called someone, because they called this a practical joke as well? Isn't it I'm kidding, but I'm not cutting yeah, I'm holding anything to do with it
the are so mad that no I'd never heard of copping of neighborhood. According I've never heard of cutting either yeah to call it to customer. I think it might be irish, I'm not sure and called toilet. This can be a different world a lot has an identical, but that's the deal, Gary Larson, the far side yeah becoming books. He he was someone who was also into saving animals, and Do you think so? When he was a when he was a cartoonist in his early days, he was being paid, but it wasn't a lot of money, so he needed to get a secondary job. So he applied to be an animal cruelty investigator for the seattle humane society, but he never ended up doing the job, because in the car on the way to the interview he hit a dog, and so he thought that's a bad start. The dog was fine, but he didn't end up doing it as a resource yeah. I was reading a bit about reintroduction scenery cause. This is about guy a little. Maybe
Maybe maybe you should did open like britain is some is kicking off beaver reintroductions, which is very exciting because they they people are a bit controversial, but basically they do do a lot of good and a lot of places they create. Wetlands and wetlands store carbon that more resistant to fire, and you know the the the very endangered like wetlands themselves are endangered. Fevers help bring the back so this year, North London got two beavers called cigani beaver justin bieber did we literally elegant take as they were the only puns, that's so by the way that I can say it has caused some controversy There was a headline from the daily mail earlier this year. Could rewinding animals turn and into a modern day. Jurassic park would be those papers. Secondly, transit book is set in the modern day
with its sloppy headline. Writing this problem in america. You know when, if you go to the coast, often there a baby turtles are bordering the my wonder into the city because they see the lights. You haven't, got people going to the beach and they see these turtles and put the men into the water. But the problem is that in areas, especially rub florida there's also a lot of tortoises around their people. Don't know that it's between titles and taught tosses, what difference being that one could swim and won't cuts. Oh so number one don't go around grabbing turtles anyway, because you know there are people who'll, do it who know what they're doing. Secondly, tortoises have toes That's the way to tell others goods public service that develop like a swimming pool them talk, totals. The other help me,
the total it's hard to say. That's, probably why it happened. red kites, namely that red cards that really done well with you and the kite that we play with is from the bird nice here there, the levels of governance? Here they ve done. They thought amazing, bear out everywhere. Wildcats might get new, wildcard, definite global, this exciting gray and you don't need permission to introduce them, because there are already a few in scotland so silent. If something is non existent in the uk, like a wolf than any provision from the environment secretary and very boring lay there are not Allowing us to have rules everywhere. What could you and I just get right up to scotland- grab a few wildcats drive down and just set them free?
it doesn't sound like it will be allowed, would be a hell of a car ride. The thing is, we both have electric cars as well, so don't stop about five times yeah. I don't know if it would Adams I'm sorry to rain on your parade chains, but the problem is the wildcats in scotland they get described as functionally extinct. This is weird they real they exist, but there are also extinct because they there are few hundred of them left only. Basically, there has been all the time. Shagging domestic cats to the extent that the gene pool is completely like scientists are studied, lots and lots of debt cats thrown about the last hundred years. They found the that you need a particular catlike, wildcats acquired a specific thing, but their randy, and they will just do all car they re
fishes wildcats or they click start, but of a bit of a loaded way of describing the just. Don't I don't know, I don't know what manner by certain they dare not massive either of two cats exercise of two cats. I would say: okay, roughly a cat behalf decker, I know, as they very rarely take human young the master cats are quite fisher sunday. They came out of birds and studying for emu, while cuts are quite similar. I just think it must be a pretty exciting day if you're, just a normal ass the car while comes into wild every like big, John Travolta, Bolivia, Newton John, would just be like the leather bound dude, and it must be like if a yeti was to approach you and have set have you done. This is bigger, is harry area is light, is slightly different. Species does not recognise the human and its own.
my wife and I have an agreement, the completely monogamous less than celebs list each celebs. Yet I am brine. Blessed Doesn't make it in. It is time for final factor, the show- and that is my fact might like this week- is mathematician. David Cox has two things named after him: a geometric coordinate ring and an algorithm that he invented, which stephen sucker they are known, as the cox ring and the cocksucker machine, so
its particularly exciting about this, is that in the nineteen seventies, Cox and Zaka met each other, and when are we got to write a paper for the invention came after that juvenile dream, having a common paper these things coordinate rings and algorithms, as the great mathematician new south wales has ever produced, explain cops what they are. Yes, I would james, because I have a maths degree and I fucking come that complicated. I really tried. I really tried to understand when I say really tried. I just knew I was going to throw it to james that if he told her that I feel fine and it's yeah no, it is. It is really really
because of the second thing that he invented was not an invention. It was attributed to him by two other students, because he was the inspiration for the cox. Ring was inspired by his earlier work and they thought let's into the gag here, but they came up with a that enough, and it's just this wonderful thing about academics having a sense of humor. This is something this is interesting. Does it think stiglitz lore of apology policy right and what it states is that no scientific discovery is actually named after the person who discovered it in the first place, so like pythagoras, theorem named out by that growth, not discover by him highly did discover how these cover been known about a bit earlier, and so this is the stigma lore of echo. and it was coined by sociologist who was called Robert merton remainder of someone else and these things
two guys when they did this by the way they were studying at princeton university. So the reason I came across this fact is because I found out that you studied at princeton university study german there and I wait now. That's that's very good. was it cannot go grey or was it ever slim percent better that it was no sprinted having germany's just so I teach gets given such a hard wrap in. It is obviously the most lyrical beautiful it. We are we to cease to people shouting autism, more films, bays really really be but then people really say. Why isn't there a word for this in english and then they will always say why, but there's one in german and- and they usually is because it is quite like like I was nate- you can just pop if you ever have been shot on. You know I'd love to have this brilliant book called schadenfreude, which was basically finding as many gaps and injustice he could find and then getting a german translator to make up a word
my favorite one wisdom, depth of a boy com which is the compulsion to stare at the person you overtaking in your car. Even those really go above, and that was that was him surrogate. These people cock and zaka. I was looking at some of the people with similar kind of names the. What would you call that double barrel? Name, if you go on the internet, you can find loads of examples of people who got married and had quite unfortunate. Names, I'm not sure all of them are true. By of looks at the mall in the newspaper archives and found some that definitely are true, and I'm going to do a little quiz see if he can, I will tell you the name of one of the people in this relationship and you can save. You can guess the name of the person they married This is an easy one. Elizabeth mcdonald tsars job ahead of us
yeah I know I know you can get this place. Is gonna Elizabeth mcdonald married a double about the baby, takeaway beggar? necessarily always double barrow by when you have the newspaper things. It says this person married this plasma and call it the donald burger wedding cleared re. So I can pull this, but you got it right. I could do to Sunday. amy wide white wines, edge whitey, steamer honey. Sorry, birth birth is good That would be great your clothes
It was alexander hole, whole Amy and Alexander whitehall, Joe loony. What loony money chant duty tuning and then the two most The client, surname, Matthew, tick, lunatic lou needs a very good I'll, be ward, one side in a to teresa, come on Michael english term. Michael TIM arnold, my back down down down down moons of Mr Eileen David, I led the eye they wanted the audience,
to raise a couple of the frankie topper me the I should also say that I was reading the red its of chill side. You know the green party leader in america and she didn't. So it was like ask her anything on the second most popular question. They asked jill stein was doctor stein. Have you ever thought about marrying senator franken and hyphenated very good. So so good and there's only one street in the world named after John major and he didn't know. It was named after and no one told him they were named after her brow. It was gonna, be such a major, close salesman I think, but it's going to be called sir John major close, but then the london fire brigade said was a bit complicated. We might get confused if someone rings up and says they just called it major close
cut out the sir John and then when, when he was asked about it, he said I think it's most unlikely that they were straight after me, but he just hasn't been told that would inform them. Margaret Thatcher has loads of stuff that Margaret thatcher has a peninsula named. anyway. That's quite interesting because in europe every ten streets are named after a man. Only one named after a woman is much more likely that you would be named after a moment. Your slogan is it well. Interestingly, ok. Taken that my mind, the most popular person in european streets names is a woman, as regards the lisbon now and these rights, Does the virgin mary in Europe, of course, so lots of catholic snuff did actually have virgin, and then names are, as you know, is usually just Mary is usually named after the church, goers teresa, santa maria
santa Maria which I would argue, is named after centre, and so we should love those offer numbers I fucking joke. I love it. Love poetry is another religious one that isn't happening because tawdry comes. You know. Somebody told rates for the show day that goes by to saint audrey, that she was an abbess and eventually a saint, and she wore lots of kind of necklaces in her youth and them as a nun. She goats three counts and she got. This was revenge because she, which is where such vanua lay such as the one that she will round her neck with, so that fast and it was saint aubert relays and then ask parliament tawdry, lies in what was it about being for five minutes of this I think the word tawdry nothing of the religious, the religious cited, the chicken bells, the downstream we had already after the the,
I was in and yeah about now about, get it. It's all this chip adele the person who made all the furniture of the georgians category is managed. Haven't you know me. I'm just gonna put you out of your misery named after the furniture in the club where they performed it, designed to look like classical thomas chippendale furniture because they were kind of you know muscular I so it's sort of muscular and impressive. So at the chez, oh, I think they do sit. Onstage and the you sit on their laps right I think so that they become the chez. I think so that's what I'm saying they all don't think this is the matter he suggested come on. My back a few days ago,
looking into just a scientists who have humor, I like it when it makes it into a paper, and I just found a couple of papers that have been published. I really like the titles of so a couple of them here they are the mouth, the anus and the blast of poor open questions about. noble openings. Yet another paper, the effects of having christmas dinner with in laws on got my ro biota composition and the third one head and neck injury risks in heavy metal had bangers stuck between rock
in the hard base. The last one, I'm gonna have to wrap us up guys. We've got to the end. Just didn't get very unintentionally unintentional, because it's about something where it was intentionally very rude, yeah. Let's try to find examples of things that unintentionally rouge okay, just a couple of very tiny, quick ones, so YOLO Williams, welsh naturalist, capris entrance springwatch and twenty sixteen. He was discussing diving seabirds with a female conservationist and they watched one plunge into the water in front of them. Just hundreds at so is that the deepest jack you ve ever had. As you know, we have had to leave. We ve. I feel that we should over the earth, like some have had this, for I know that the old time classic harry carpenter after the boat race, nineteen, seventy seven was reporting. It live on tv and said: ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the cambridge president is
the cocks of the oxen. Can I just do what I don't really good? twenty twelve pfizer they draw company came up with a new drug for our steel, arthur and dogs called remedy.
