ever since I saw him in basque yacht when I was a kid we have high school, I thought I was in high school. I think fell in love with it, and farmer with Israel women's in it a night is washed everything he did since that using shaft there. the eye he was, people's fernand, hasn't shaft. So good he was an angel that america so good, and then you see was in syria. I believe so good ass, like he was just didn't. He just started like racking up these same credits. it'd be, but he was never that he was never the center of anything. You know I never saw him as a lead, except for and basquiat itself, and I just I, like as soon as I started, reading the book he just as this professorial quality about him. You know the guy the character monk, as it is a college professor, the novelist and like I just I just feel like he's the kind of guy who you you don't have to

believing he's the smartest guy in the room. You know that adds that sort of a that's the gravitas that he has, that he carries with them, and so it just felt like he's the perfect dude. So when did you start adapting? I don't want to get into the nitty gritty of this cause everyone's going to ask you this, but when it when she started adapting the book and what was the process from your writing, drafts are bad. Two of the sudden you're making the movie hell on attack re it'll, be so. I've found the book in december of two thousand and twenty and the movie will be in theaters in december of twenty twenty three. So that's a three year, somebody with a deep covered. I know I know I was well. I was in a real bad place that you know we're on a bad place. I think, but I had also had this I about to get a show on the are very, very close to getting a television show in the air and then at the last minute they pull the plug on, and that was like September october of twenty twenty, so I was in a bad place, creative the emotionally. I just

They had no idea what I was gonna do next. I just found this book through just happen, stance and and fell in love with it immediately and felt like I just can't. my creative energies again and I really wanted to focus on making it. So I I wrote while there's this it's the scanning perceval everett, who has since become a really close friend of mine and perceval, gave me the rights for free, Is your you heard how passionate I was about it. Wow yeah and he just and he gave me the reds reveals a gay rights were free for six months and go right, a script enough. Something comes in, Then you can pay me back then. So I just want to read. The script on speck and we sold it finished in lake. a burglar made, and then we we took it out to producers and sold it to tee street in the street and merci and am may of twenty twenty one and a half and then it was just after the raises regard jeffrey attached, the regatta ryan attached, and then it was

restarted. Shooting it in august of twenty twenty two and isa with super lay right. His knees, the last he was. He was like the last person we, I was real bows, a hard that was a hard roll. The cast was, we were sort of I We were. We were coming very close to like when that part had to shoot, and so I think we had it was link, appears four days between us sending this group, the isa men isa having to be set, so she stood up if she came in and and by the way, great career move by her. This is like the pipe. This is exactly the type of part she's not into that much, but I should like for since the early ever like twenty minutes, but she's really will get in it. Then she's a good actors in the sea integral you know what I may add that that's it. I feel this is that's the thing we ve got. We ve gotten some great out there's for these smaller parts. You know that Did there's not a lot of screen time, but I think the reasons are able to get the isa and give David's further. Roles is because you know that the these they dangers

Everybody said to really. These are just good parts. You know like they're there, they they're not necessarily the most screen time, but they're, good rules and like there's really. Lived in characters were doing interesting things in saying interesting things in an interesting movie. I just think that I was very fortunate to obtain if the people we obtain- and I think the way that you did that is, like you know, a lot of the especially black actors. You know everybody's, like how did you get? How did you assemble a tremendous cast and it's like well, this you know we all the time about how black actors are getting the rules that they deserve and like feel under represented in under utilised and films, and so I think that you know when you I should give them real parts since were like, even if it's not a lot of screen time, but these are real. Characters were who are saying, and thinking interesting things. Then you sort of like people are hungry, for that has been produced. Black actors, are hungry. For that general. You think this movie happens ten years ago now now Not only does movie happens, evenly fight

years ago. United at this is this is like a movie that ninety eight percent of them people who read this movie didn't like ass in autumn like this was? This was that this was a move. That the vast majority of people who looked into her, like, oh, my god, I love the script. I people Only this is one of the best groups that they read in years. And then I'm like great. That's the most. treating part about hollywood, is that they never tell you why they pass. He never tell you the truth about why they pass right ahead. There. I have no idea that they would never tell me that the truth about these things, they would just say we just can't made here. I love. I really wish. I worked at a place where you can it is no. We just can't get it made here and it was like. Fortunately had arrived, I am gm step up and say you know what we're going to we're going to do this. We're gonna trust you and take a risk. That's the that's the thing that I I'd I sort of knew that hollywood was risk averse. I didn't really understand how risk averse hollywood was until I took took this out. I had never I'd. Never. I'd never had such a view of praise about a project about the creative effort. In anything that I worked on and then you know that nobody willing to sort of like actually back up that phrase with the with money. You know that That was the only thing that makes sense just trying to think from side is that you hadn't directed a movie before right because as its outlay they were giving you, you know the x men seek,

or something that was not the most expensive movie, We are a drop in the bucket for them yeah, but this it's the kind of movie that they would have made without even blinking in like nineteen. Eighty two right: we're talked about that on the rewatch balls, like these types of movies that got made we all the way through the nineties yeah, so many movies now that I'm like this would never ever get made like cloning that I live. I bet you shot redemption doesn't get made today like if somebody took out shawshank redemption is like I want to make this movie. That's that's sooner it's a long range eyes guys the iron rapture, it's not a franchise. It's not him ten superior movie like I just think that people aren't really in the market for that kind of thing. Unfortunately, I wonder if that's gonna come back, though, because this is such a fascinating movie here. A part of it is because we just said awesome directors, but we had some.

some really good. Lower budget movies come out and just in general, I think there is a large jam with projects and then there are come out now, but I can keep up like I haven't even seen. Alexander paid movie at these were my favorite directors, the man I think yet this is, I think, that's what's her I think that what you're saying as I'm talking to a lot of people now who are like who like me, had had a really hard time getting tv shows men had had a really sort of like it. It's like impossible, was so hard to get. Tv shows me for a very long time. I ve idea, how that's how that scene is going to look the other side of the strike, but I've talked to our people, just like. Oh, I just want to make an opponent found because you know that even or even a small budget series like let's say that's true- an episode return absences. Thirty million dollars, you know nobody's ya, know, is in nobody's given a first time director thirty million dollars I mean. Maybe somebody is, but certainly

I would not have gotten thirty million dollars to make this movie, and so I just think that you're getting you know if you write a good script and you sort of get some good actors, you I have an easier time. I think convincing people to give you money to make a movie than you do. A tv show just because a t v show is just such a a bigger commitment to people, and so I know, a bunch of people who said who are saying like their writing their own movies right now and try to get funding for, like an independent film, give it what's flip the mouse. And I agree with everything you just said- is up until now. early this year, the money, was in the tv shows oh yeah made more sense for somebody like you, whose up becoming writer. Who's been on. Some stuff is ready to make like that. Lead next thing, but you said you lost sat on a tv show, because your brain was a guy. Did tv show that's where that's where the most creative

but it is goin- that's right, make one more the most money. That's like the kind of the safest bat exact. Now it feels like, as the tv stuff post strike were withdrawn from like six hundred shows. The maybe two hundred shows yeah. I think a lot of creativity is gonna drive back to movies witches super exciting for me, because I miss that era me do man. I think the leg that to me, as I like, I feel like I feel like awkward, we're going to see you know it, always it always waxes and wanes right like there's always you know I've, I listen to that. Quentin tarantino interviewer, he's, like you know it's like it's by decade. Right like it's like you know, at the eighties, were like kind of fallow and then and then the nineties came, and you had like all these amazing directors come all at once. You know and then the then the early You thousands are like kind of fallow again and then he just you just talked about sort of like the option. Down the industry and so yeah, I'm hoping that I'm hoping that sort of like the world of independent cinema is is coming back because I want,

make more movies. I start. I certainly want to start directing more more independent films and b. I just think It is allowing fur, furthermore, creativity, I think that it is we ve to a place, but I think that tvs kind of stagnated answered like what what their, what they interesting things you know tv used to be its really great He because they get. I think that I always say if you talk to, if you talk to tv exact If new- and you ask them like what's on year What's on your mount, rushmore of tv shows they're all going to say basically the same thing right, they're going to say sopranos, they're gonna say breaking bad mad men like these, of the wire, and the thing guys tell people is that like go to those I m d b pages for the pilots, a name, a single This person involved with any of those projects like superman his right leg. Name a state like nobody knew who do aims. Gaddafi was James gale.

Like one of the heavy using get shorty railway gallant, rabbits, yeah, daddy, those like its biggest credit and all of a sudden, it's like he was born the play tony's brando like he was pretty. For their part. Nobody knew who, like Elizabeth moss, was rarely. These are not like bold. I am data when they start these shows and tv was a Is that made actors like made people's career? and now it's like, if you wanted to make the sopranos nowadays they'd be like okay. Well, we need we're deniro to play uncle junior and we need We're saying to direct the pilot, and it would just be, will be worse for it. You know. I personally think that you have a worse product because it would be like it would be so delicate it's like getting the most famous people involved and it would, be dedicated to sort of like making the best tv show possible. You know when I think of that. The unfortunate I think that new heading into and in film you're, seeing people you're seeing people take more risks in that way, which is crazy.

It seems like the whole thing has been inverted right that that sort of like that used to be like that that kind of, like experimental leg, let's find Let's find interesting actors and give them good rules used to happen in tv and now it's happening filmore often he had no shots apple, but this is kind of the apple strategy. Right like the morning show get the most famous actors possible, spend a lot of money, put them on a show, and then you get when you go to apple tv. It's a picture of this really famous cast that you recognize and that's not that if you go back, if like we did advanced metrics for the tv shows like you mention the greatest- has always like one creator, maybe too, never more than two percent a singular vision, and then he cast people that we didn't really have a lot of baggage history with the eu falco neuron eyes. I did other than her and remembered she was in copley for ten seconds exile Zactly. So

I dont. Maybe that come back, but I doubt it because hollywood is pretty consistently come back, we'll come back and, like ten years will come back when, like all the cool interesting, people, have leg in drummed out of t v, because they can't get anything made, and so then tv become stagnant and then everybody's, like every yeah executive tv comes back. It's just you know it's just always. This is cyclical. It's always cyclical. What part of the problem at t v is because they try to pad the episode, so this has happened, especially in documentaries. They pad the episodes to make more money, and all that this water down. You know when you go back to the sopranos, where there was thirteen up ass. I was a little fat right. The date in there they also were competing as network shows that were twenty two up, a certain when her father s eyes, they thought that a more exactly where we found the sweet spot, the last ten years about, like yeah and I think the leg you know Yes to all of that, and I think that I think that you know. Hopefully

were realizing now that, like you know, I think that now you're, seeing like six and eight episode seasons of tv. It's like getting some people are doing like the british model, where it's like flipping, don't need we don't. the exact we don't need twenty four episodes. We need sixty eight episode seasons, unlike let's just go if story that we need to tell talent move on, we don't need to tell the story anymore. I think that that is, you know, I'm hoping it one of the things that comes out on the on the other end of the strike, as you said, is like going from six hundred shows. Maybe two hundred shows and, like you know, giving audiences quality cause. That's that's another thing I think sort of like his god unspoken and in some of these cover asian is is like a lot of it. Up is made with disdain for the audience like it's like you had. It is truly just like we are just feeding the content with this is like the content unlike were inviting you guys, like the slump in the content drop and like they don't actually care. That's just like pumping out shows is. we as possible. Take an arms race. You know it's like it's like the streamers have turned.

Like let's not make the best shows its like. Let's make the most tv and sort of like that is, people are r r and then the people have been injured over the course of a weekend and then their Ivan. Think about it ever again, but we'll get the numbers up like. I think that, hopefully, that Who is going away and sort of like that? It's like, let's not make these Let's not make, as many shows is, make a limited number of shells will, let's make them really good, like I think that, hopefully that's gonna be of the things that that comes out on the other under the strikes. You could go into a stream streamer right now be like ten. Besides the house's hearted interracial couple we're shit happens and they have to adapt their heads and don't look like a major setback it we're gonna have had, but can I need ten at the sight of the lake, exactly exactly go backwards because it so funny other people from the from the first blogger, which

Bloggers, their churning out guide their get burned out, but some of them they decide they generate scripts and, in some cases, even try. and you are the one that made it and now you're the one that this whole this whole group of whoever would point to be like mccord like that's. I want to be like cord or o worked out record, but it didn't work out. Most people wait. What what was different about you and your approach have you as you look back like not to not to brag but like what do you? What what do you think made your path different than other people? Ah, I think a lot of it. His luck. I don't like when people I don't like when people, all talk about their success without talking about luck, because luck is a huge part of success. In my mind, It's and so, and so one of the things that I got lucky I like it is incorrect.

Really hard to break into the industry. Like the number one question people ask me that I'd never have an answer to his like. How do you somebody important to read your script and that's just leg dude, I have no clue a guy that that is, that is an impossible question. The sort of there is so many roadblocks and obstacles and gatekeepers into this industry that they sometimes feels punishable on the outside. My first stroke of luck was I was working at gawker and this guy reached out to me. One danger said: hey Michael mally. Boston, you know, I'm a guy, like you know my aunt. By now. I guess I might go molly reached out to me seen some of my stuff on gawker and he just reached out and said: hey. Do you want to work on this tv show that I'm creating, and so he was grading the It's called survivor's remorse that was based loosely on Lebron James' life. Yet, and so he asked me to come be in the writers room of that show, and so I had it. I'd never ridden a tv show before and he was a look. This may be

disaster you may hated. You may be bad at it, but, like you, may love it in like let's take a risk on each other and sort of like you can come, join the demon and and I'll take a risk on you. If you take a risk on me, so you have to la for this. You did right, I was. I was already living in l, a in l, a for docker, and so so I just saw as a cool, and so he offered me the job. On a friday visually I our work on a monday, so I had to call my recalled by bar sincere, like a man, I'm sorry to do this. by leg a minute We forty eight hours notice nominally themselves. he was very graciously said That's that was okay and end parted ways, and I went to work on his show and so that tomorrow, let my hearing about this anecdotally by other areas like cord cord quit blogging, he's right for a tv show that the emphasis placed on the broadest dig up exactly what I wait what's happening,

I use that word also get so you get rhodesia and then, and then my second and then the second stroke of luck was, I think, I mean like just being twenty fourteen like it was like it was still it. I'm one sort of like Things were going well in blogging and like internet media was still good and so sort of like a lot of people. I think once necessarily trying to get out of the industry at that point, because it was like a like when I am Ok, I was I look at this is terrible has come back. I was like there's gonna be around forever, so am I gonna? Do they show? And I don't like it I just come back to gawk and I was like the internet. Internet media is going to be around forever like I did. People think that I laughed I was like. I see the writing on the wall in this. Isn't gonna, be here any more, but that is not true. That is. I did not see the writing on the wall. I thought

who's gonna be fine forever, and so I just went because I wanted to try something new, but I think that I kind of I kind of laughed at a time when people weren't necessarily looking for four ways out of the industry. I think that sort of like people, like others I'm comfortable and dead, I'm gonna be blogging forever, and so I just I think that I was a little ahead of the curve in that way, and so and then one day just wasn't it. I was just in it and sordid and then that I really the second did the one thing that I actually do think that I did the ones decision that I actually made. I think that really helped shape what my career became was I was really picky with the with the jobs that I took after that, you know that was like I was I wanna I dont want it just sort of like rush into anything because they're gonna offer me a bunch of money or because there's like celebrities involved, like I just chose work that I felt like was. I was I felt like shows that were trying to like

takes wings and do something that other people were doing. You know, I felt like even if it was like. Even let europe the good place, it's like its argued, in a sitcom about at the golf philosophy and like death, then sort of like where what of what it means to be in the afterlife. Okay, that sounds interesting, like succession you're, making like a dark somebody about about the murdoch family, like ok, that sounds cool, lichen and watchman, is like crazy right, like I just I was working on stuff. The just fell like they were taking huge swings, because the thing that I felt was that that was how you sort of broke through the noise, because what I had started sort of like at the time when it really was starting to become an arms race. Just like more more more more, and so I always felt that one of the way, stood to sort of like make sure you you what you are waking broke through was like at least it's gonna, be a big swing in its better. It's better to be a sort of like a big grand failure,

like a mediocre, relax, middling, tepid success united, I think that that is that it the thing that I but I wanted to do so? I ended up working on on a series of shows that you know br were able break through and sort of like were able to be part of the conversation in a way that other shows weren't himself. That is something that I do feel like again, that's lock right. The vote taking those jobs is locked, but I think that I I chose the region you take died. They. I think that you know, for instance, that and I got the watchman job was. I went to a dinner party make sure. As one night I ended up sitting next to David lyndal off because an end I was talking, his hat off, because their leftovers are just ended, knows obsessed with the leftovers, like yeah series the serious finale. The leftovers leg had happened like three weeks before, and so I was just I damon forever and do was like amazing and just chatting him up.

Then he emailed me like a month later was like hey. Do you do you want to work on the show called watchmen itself, so I just got that thanks to sitting next to David, dinner party. So there's the luck, but then what have you know? Not luck is that Damon comes to means, or why has this crazy idea, unlike ok. You know what I'm I'm down. That sounds interesting, and so that's the that's the part that I think we're like. I made that decision, but it's always equal combinations of like hardworking done work. Well, I saw you a good job of aligning with people who you can learn suffer I'll have it. I did damon Damon, the love and make sure like my two biggest man, tourism is industry. Like I will I will. I will work with those guys whenever they asked me to work for them and they were like when I wrote this movie script. I went to films believes it all you have done have is a vision in your mind and then be able to articulate that vision to the people. Did you hired me around you and so the apron did the seed in like twenty thousand twenty sixteen, and then I found this book and twenty twenty and the in that I finally had the courage to direct. Was that I when I read the book and then I wrote the script I was like. I understand this interior ill as well, if not better than anybody else in the whole world like like. I know these characters. I know the story in such a deep way that even if I don't know anything about lighting or cameras leg, I know The story that I want to tell, and I have the that I'll use. That is my roadmap for you now, and so I felt like Even if I don't know this other shit, I know

I know the story that I'm gonna tell and that can be my guide when I make all these other decisions that I don't know about it, so to me? That was the gear leg of the reason I I hadn't like. I knew that I wanted to drag for four years before I found this, but I didn't really We put anything because nothing. I didn't feel that passionate about anything, and I knew that if I went there and didn't feel passionately about the story in the characters and didn't know the other stuff. Then it'd, be sort of like really out of my depth and underwater and, like I don't care about these people, I don't care about the story, and so, ah that's going to make the story horrible and I think you can see Really. I think that you can see a lot of movies and tv shows where it's just like you can tell. I think we all can tell like when nobody's passionate about something like we angry you watch a like? Nobody actually can't like this. Everybody who is coming to set every day was just eric, Asher jack, like they were not there because they believed in what they were doing and I felt like

I was worried that if I took something on that would be, you would be able to tell that this was the first thing that I found a like. Oh, every day that I got a sad, I will be deeply passionate about the story. There were trying to tell him. I think that up got our hands a little, but I feel like that. They got talk and amber waves and buggy nights valid cord you're like a director down. The real movie jack. It's a real reject. I don't I don't want to step on the movie too much cause. really want people watch says without worry that we're in this by the movie but yeah. We should talk about I can see the movie. I am witches, it's just brilliant and the way you flip, some staff in I didn't hear you talk is that I am afraid to say too much because their owners, but there is a specific angle of this movie tat, I think, is gonna hit close to him Some people are definitely in the railways and eighty the railways too, but I do think hollywood's going to react to this. So the premise of the film is that Jeffrey right place this college, as your slash novel- is named monk and eyes, specializes in kind of contemporary retelling of classical greek literature and serve. Ah, you know people say like your books are like well written, but they're kind of academic and dance, and they always say, you know why. Why are you not like writing about like black stories like that some people, want to read for me, like you're, a black american like right about black stories right about the inner city right about drugs and write about slavery. in his like you know, like what I right. I think that my stories are universal. These are black story because I'm black and I'm telling them Why? Why do you want me to do other sellers stuff? Every boy you know said yourself, and so one day in the sort of bit of rage how many rights this kind of deeply stereotypical book full of like a lot of troops and ridiculous stereotypes about the black community,

any rights. It is a prank intending to kind of humiliate them. The publishers and sort of blake and show them the kind of garbage they keep soliciting from black writers and he says it out under a pseudonym and it becomes like a huge best- sellers are by far the by far the most successful bookies ever published it sort of like he's getting offered like all this money is getting offered movie deals in this insane book deal and their stuff going on in his personal life that I won't spoil it requires him too, to need a lot of money fast and so the rest of the stories him existing between these two worlds of meeting the might of this. This successful is providing but also deeply resenting. That this book is because mingled as big of a successes it as it is and he's trying to sabotage the book. Yeah a letter in its in its actually working in his favour, decided tat. You want the title

Is it because I still body about exactly because just there though the lie that get up it's like any, a story about a lie, sort of like the lie, becomes bigger and bigger and bigger, and tells her that the person care at their arms around it anymore and should have we see what happens. How much of this was reflected in that either you been offered or just whatever since two thousand and ten as the money I like. I got three months before I found this book. I got a note from an executive that are needed to make a character. Blacker and my script knows I gotta. This guide has to be blacker and and that that no came through an emissary right, and I told my Can't I told the emissary I was like listen. I will indulge that. No. If this person gets on a phone with me, or oars, sits down. We face to face and tells me exactly what blacker means and what does it mean to make character black or I'll talk of I'll talk to them? If they sit down and talk to me about that and

you know that no one aware I because to have like precision, they would probably have to commit a civil rights violation. Further, didn't I couldn't pure and simple, but like that stuff happens, you know I had a friend I a friend recently, who does a couple years ago, she's a black female journalist and she's getting into film on television, and she came to Wafers are meetings and you know they're alive, she was sat down with one production company and they were like. You know what what kind of stuff are you interested in writing and she said you know I I might. of the nineties, I'd really like to write an erotic thriller. Ah, she said I like the right, a rom com, you know I haven't. I think that those kind of fallen by the wayside. They said, okay, interesting, give us some time. Back to later themselves.
